BurstMedia attack HELP!!

Unread postby vinaymieux » November 27th, 2007, 11:16 am

Hi I'm new to this forum. This is my first post.

Recently my computer was affected by BurstMedia  . I was able to scan it and delete it using Spy Bot :) . But here's the big problem:
Since the attack, everytime i restart my computer, i can access the internet only for about 5-10 mins, after that it just stop working. There is no internet problem that i've thoroghly checked. Also i can still keep sending and receiving mails from Outlook Express and also use Yahoo messenger and Google Talk :?: . But nothing else works- IE, Opera,Mozilla, Antivirus update, windows update...etc, nothing works. :(
I called symantec people, they said probably there has been some change in the registry value of Internet Connection Timeout, and I should change that; but they don't know how to do it.

Any Help or Suggestions PLS...!!!!!

Hi vinaymieux,

Step 1

  1. Please download the self-extracting version of HijackThis from here. Do Not run it directly via a browser. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on hijackthis_sfx1991.exe to run it.
  3. Click on the Unzip button. It will install HijackThis to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
  4. Double click on HijackThis.exe to run it.
  5. Select Do a system scan and save a logfile. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Do not fix anything you see as not all entries are harmful and are needed for the normal functioning of Windows.

Don't exit HijackThis yet.

Step 2

  1. Click on the Config... button at the bottom right hand corner.
  2. At the top, click on the Misc Tools button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this list in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. The HijackThis log
  2. The Uninstall list

Hi ndmmxiaomayi,

Firstly thanks a ton for trying to help. :D

I was not able to attach the files as there was an error so i just copied the text. I hope that's OK.

Here's the funny part: Till the time I downloaded and scaned with HijackThis and was ready to reply, my internet stopped working :x . So i had to Restart and post this. ;)

Hi vinaymieux,

Before I continue, I need to be clear of two issues.

Is this computer connected to a company network?

Does Bharti Infotel Ltd provide you with internet services?

Hi ndmmxiaomayi,

1. No, I'm not on a company network. I use my laptop at work where I connect it via router for WiFi connection; and at home where i use Lan cable. I've tried it at other places also. The issue is not with the internet connection that has been checked.

2. I didn't get your second question properly.

Let me re-phrase that.

Is Bharti Infotel Ltd your Internet Service Provider (ISP) ?

Hi vinaymieux,

Try this: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

Download it and save to your desktop. Double click to run it. When done, it will prompt you to restart the computer. Restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log.

Also, please report if your connections are now working fine.
