Hi, guys

Things seem to be working slowly since my nephew stayed the past few nights. Can you look this over please?
Also, I can't get my system restore to work; every restore point that I pick comes up with "unable to use system restore point" when I reboot.

Hi starter005,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - Global Startup: PreCast Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Ocucom\PreCast\tmon.exe
O16 - DPF: {D8AA889B-2C65-47C3-8C16-3DCD4EF76A47} (Invoke Solutions Participant Control(MR)) - http://rms2.invokesolutions.com/events/ ... MILive.cab

If you don't need the AT&T support icon running in the system tray, check these as well

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe
O4 - Global Startup: AT&T Self Support Tool.lnk = C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\matcli.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Ocucom
PreCast

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
--------------------------------------------------------
Go to My Computer, right click the C: drive and choose Properties.
Please record what it reports for Used space and free space on the drive and report that back in your next post.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the info on drive space.

Askey, Used space is 9.42GB, free is 47.8GB
I would like to keep the AT&T icon so I didn't delete their entries.

Another question I have is when I bootup my admin window comes on and wants me to put in a password. I just click cancel and it continues the bootup. This has never come up before, but now it is coming up every time; do you know why?

Here is the latest HiJack log:

starter005,
Looks like space is no problem.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post CCleaner's install.txt and the contents of kav.txt

Askey, I am having trouble getting Kaspersky to load. I get 92%, 13821 KB of 14862KB and then I get an error message that the update has failed.

starter005,
See if we can get this one to run instead:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run AVG Anti-Spyware:
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have
downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports. <== This is important
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
  • Click on Scanner on the program's toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
I still want the install.txt from CCleaner, and the AVG Anti-Spyware report.

starter005,
You don't neeed to run AVG.
Changes in the logon routine like that can be a result of automatic updates and nothing to cause concern.
You can check the User Accounts dialog in Control Panel to see if there are any changes you want to make.
You can enter the Windows 2000-style User Accounts application by going to Start, Run and typing
control userpasswords2

If you are using XP Home, you may have to boot in Safe Mode to make certain changes in User Accounts since the hidden Administrator account will not be available.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (utorrent, Azureus, Morpheus, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur.

When you use Peer-to-peer (P2P) programs, you are downloading software from an unknown source directly onto your computer, bypassing your Firewall and Anti-Virus software. It's hardly surprising that many of the available downloads are being used by malware purveyors as a delivery method for their infections. Further, if your P2P program is not configured correctly you may be sharing more files than you realize. See here : http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/09/06/Seattle-man-arrested-for-p-to-p-ID-theft_1.html

Even if you have one of the SAFE P2P programs, the practice of file-sharing is very UNSAFE for the health of your PC.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of major PC infections.
Better ask yourself if you and your system CD are REALLY ready to reformat your Hard Drive and Re-install Windows.

The risks of using P2P programs are described here Sourceforge webpage and in this Information Week article.
Some malware help forums are now refusing to help those who show up with infections from P2P usage.

I think you should stop using and Uninstall Limewire, but it's your decision.

Reset Options in CCleaner for Regular Use.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. Then under Internet Explorer, Uncheck "History". In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Check Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.

The only infected files remaining are detected in your System Restore. Let's remove those and establish a new restore point.
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous Restore points, including those likely to be infected, and a new Restore Point will be established..
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

If you would like some notice of any potential system changes, but prefer a more visible, open notification, you may wish to use WinPatrol instead of Spybot's TeaTimer function. You can still use Spybot as a scanner.
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the older version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident (shows a red/white shield).
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system. It also provides selective cookie management.

I don't see any malware concerns on your system, other than these notes..
