Upgrade.exe virus or adware took over control of IE

Unread postby meedoo » November 26th, 2007, 5:04 pm

hi there, i am new to coyote and trying to follow the steps of self-help

here's the situation:

Two days ago my brother was chating with me online and he sent me a website link. I should known better but I trusted the link that he sent me and it asked to run upgrade.exe, I suspected it in the begining and then I installed it any way. Now IE will open and it will show the home page but it seems that It is doing something in the background and then after about 1 min it can take browsing requests from you.

here's what i did:
1. I have installed spypot search and destroy but it always looks as the exe file gets deleted from the directory. I installed version 1.4 and 1.5 to make sure that I do not have a problem with a version. I have even used RDC from home and moved the exe file but once put into the folder they get deleted (this happens for "blindman.exe and spypot.exe". I renamed both files from home computer and moved them to the infected PC and was able to run spypot and cleaning whatever it founds. Problem still exists.

2- Ran Symantic AV Corporate Version 8.00.9374 with virus definition file 11/20/2007 rev. 2 and it did not find anything.

3- Tried installing AVG Anti-spyware and I get an error Connection to service failed. Please, rinstall AVG Antispyware 7.5

4- I have tried restoring windows, reinstalling IE6 via ie.inf and "sfc /scannow" validating windows files and non of them have solved the problem
The problem is still existing

thanks in advance for your time,
here's the hijackthis

Unread postby Katana » December 2nd, 2007, 9:10 pm

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy
and sometimes a post manages to slip by us.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

If you still require help please post a fresh Hijack This log to this thread.
I will be notified and I will get back to you ASAP.

Old version of HJT
You are running an older version of Hijack This.

Save HJTinstall.exe to your desktop.
It is important that you uninstall any previous versions by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel
before installing a newer version.

  • Double click on the HJTinstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\\Program Files\\Trend Micro\\Hijack This.
  • Click I accept
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

PS I will close your thread at WTT
http://forums.whatthetech.com/Upgrade_e ... 85511.html

If you have posted at any other forums, please could you inform them that you are recieving help.
