The AVG Anti-Rootkit resulted in nothing so I guess that's a good sign?

I don't think the problem has been fixed yet, the downloading manager still opens by itself every once in a while...

Good evening.

The AVG Anti-Spyware seems to be acting up because when I try to view reports it says none saved so should i scan again?

No, not at the moment. AVG Anti-Spyware does make it a bit complicated to get a report. You won't get one unless you follow the instructions exactly. I would guess that you missed a step - quite understandably.

The AVG Anti-Rootkit resulted in nothing so I guess that's a good sign?

Yes, it is. :)

I don't think the problem has been fixed yet, the downloading manager still opens by itself every once in a while...

That is worrying. Can you tell what it is trying to download? Which 'download manager' is it?

----------------------------------------

ESET Online Scanner

ESET found some more items we need to sort out. We'll let ESET do this. Please run the scanner again. The instruction that is different this time is in blue:

Please run the ESET Online Scanner. You must use Internet Explorer to run the scan.
  • Check the box to accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When prompted, left-click on the Information Bar which pops up at the top of your browser window
  • Click on Install ActiveX Control
  • A message box will pop up. Click on Install to install the software
  • Click Start
  • This time, check the box remove found threats
  • Do not check the box scan for unwanted applications
  • Click Start
  • When the scan has ended it should show a report giving details of any threats found
  • The report will be saved as C:/Program Files/esetonlinescanner/log.txt
Please post that report as a reply to this thread.

----------------------------------------

Please post the ESET report and give me as much information as you can about the problem with the download manager.

Hmm... You ran an ESET scan on 20th November and it found seven items. You ran another one two days later and it's clear. It could be that they were false positives from ESET, but it seems strange that there were seven of them. Alternatively, your AV program (or another scan) could have removed or fixed them. I think that, in the circumstances, it would be best to re-run AVG Anti-Spyware. Please print out the instructions and carefully follow them, especially the parts marked with blue asterisks.

Is it possible that it is Norton/Symantec that is causing the download manager to open. I know that these programs check for updates at regular intervals. Obviously, we need to check a bit deeper into this.

--------------------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:
  • Open the program
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful.
Please check the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... make sure it shows inactive or not available in the free version.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • ***** Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports. *****
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
------------------------------------------------

Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware, which you downloaded earlier
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • ***** Then click the Save Scan Report button. *****
    • ***** Click the Save Report as button. *****
    • ***** Save the report to your Desktop. *****
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Reboot in Normal Mode.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post the AVG Anti-Spyware report and a new HijackThis log.

Good morning.

Well, that looks good. The AVG Anti-Spyware scan only picked up some tracking cookies so it looks as if the computer is clean. We just need to tidy up now. You can delete Blacklight and uninstall AVG Anti-Rootkit if you wish. I suggest that you keep AVG Anti-Spyware and run regular scans (don't forget to update it first).

----------------------------------------

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer. They are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Double click OTMoveIt.exe to launch the programme.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programmes alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to the allow clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt
  • Now delete OTMoveIt.exe

----------------------------------------------------

If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

I would also recommend that you have a look at Firetrust SiteHound. This gives warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. An alternative is McAfee SiteAdvisor. I use SiteHound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

This article, How to prevent Malware by miekiemoes, gives some very good advice.

Please let me know whether you have any questions.
