My Trend Micro internet security is warning me my machine is attempting to connect to 'whataboutadog.com' and 'http://88.50.5.21/time.txt'. I started Hijack This and the log file showed Whataboutadog as a trusted site. I deleted this line in the registry. It reappeared right after I launched Outlook Express. Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Welcome to the Forums.

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
If any other issues arise let me know.
The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. So lets do this to the end!

  • All hijackthis logs I ask for should be done in normal mode ( not safe mode)
  • These logs should be done last after you have followed my instructions in the previous post.

Please if you decide to seek help at another forum let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and tying 2 of us up is a waste of time.
If you have any questions about any advice given here please STOP and ask!

OK we will get rid of this.
Remember to always look and see what I have asked you to post.
I needed a new HJT log. This will save you time. ;)
Just finish this then post what I ask on the bottom of this post.

Fix AWF Infection

Copy the file paths in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

"C:\Program Files\Linksys EasyLink Advisor\bak\LinksysAgent.exe"
"C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Visioneer OneTouch\bak\OneTouchMon.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\ctfmon.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\NeroCheck.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak\PSDrvCheck.exe"
"C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\bak\Weather.exe"
"C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\bak\HPWuSchd2.exe"
"C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\bak\PPWebCap.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\bak\Reader_sl.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\bak\realsched.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Corel\WordPerfect Office 2002\Programs\bak\QFSCHD100.EXE"
"C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\{33D6CC28-9F75-4d1b-A11D-98895B3A3729}\bak\hphupd08.exe"
"C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\bak\DirectCD.exe"

  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
  • Press 2 then Enter
  • Notepad will open a file named FindAWF.txt. It will appear with instructions to click below the line and paste the list of files to be restored.
  • Right click below this line and select Paste, to paste the list of files copied to the clipboard earlier. Save and close the document.
  • The program will proceed to move the legit files and will perform another scan for bak folders.
  • It may take a few minutes to complete, so please be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in Notepad called AWF.txt.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

________________________________________
Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.

How are we doing? The computer seems to be running some faster and the warnings from Trend Micro about connecting to the Whataboutadog site have stopped. Feels like we're making progress and thank you again for your efforts.

We're getting there. AWF missed one so let's run that again fast and get one more scan to be sure what ever created this ptoblem isn't lurking about on your machine.

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak\qttask.exe" -atboottime

  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak

  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
  • You will be presented with a Menu.
  • Press 3, then press Enter.
  • Press any key to continue.
  • A Notepad document FindAWF.txt will appear with instructions to click below the line and paste the list of folders to be removed.
  • Right click below this line and select Paste, to paste the list of folders copied to the clipboard earlier. Save and close the document.
  • The program will proceed to remove the bad folders and will perform another scan for .bak folder
  • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
Now click on Scan Settings
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK

Now under select a target to scan select My Computer

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.

The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.

Now click on the Save as Text button:

Save the file to your desktop.

Looks good.

I'm curious. Is system restore on ? We usually see someting from Kasperskys about it.

A note about this:
It is often asked that System restore is turned off prior to cleaning malware from some sites.
I can't think of a worse thing to do. Many times things go wrong when trying to clean this stuff. So a system restore point with malware in it would be much better than none at all if we needed it.

Check it for me.

Right click My Computer
Then Propeties then system restore
There should not be a check mark by turn system restore off. system restore

If so please remove that check mark.
Click APPLY
and OK.

WeatherBug is a system tray icon that offers weather information and includes built-in ads. WeatherBug is controlled by AWS Convergence Technologies (weatherbugmedia.com). There is some controversy over whether WeatherBug should be targeted by anti-parasite software. AWS strongly deny their software is ‘spyware’, and by the definition used here, it is not, as it does not leak information back to its controlling servers. However, WeatherBug has in the past been silently installed by the FavoriteMan parasite and Freeze.com screensavers, and more recently has been bundled by software such as AIM and Blubster. This makes it ‘unsolicited’, and since it is installed to raise money for its creators through the built-in ads it is certainly ‘commercial’. So it does meet the definition for ‘parasite’: unsolicited commercial software. It is nonetheless listed as a borderline case because it is not overtly harmful and many people do install it deliberately. WeatherBug bundles the MySearch parasite in its standalone distribution and has in the past, installed Gator and SVAPlayer.

I recommend that you uninstall WeatherBugand choose one of these alternatives:
Weather Pulse
Weather Watcher
or
Get mozilla Firefox and then get FORECASTFOX!!!
or check the weather at these websites:
Weather Street: US Weather
Intellicast
To uninstall WeatherBug:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight WeatherBug, click Remove.
  4. Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
This is the item to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe 1

As you probably suspected, in my initial attempts to deal with the problem myself I read somewhere that I should turn off system restore because the scan for problems was blocked by a restore point. No doubt bad advice and I have turned it back on, fortunate I didn't need to use it in dealing with this issue. My machine is back to normal and speed seems much improved compared with performance even before Whataboutadog got in.

I'd like to make a contribution to your service and feel truly in your debt. Could you let me know how to do this? This is an invaluable service to the rest of us who understand so little about these machines and the variety of risks out there. I have learned much and appreciate your skill and patience.

Turning system restore back on has created a new/clean restore point for you. Image

You can look into making a donation to this site here
This is sincerely appreciated.

Great news ! Image

Your log now appears to be clean.

Lets do a few things to tidy up.
Please do these in the order I suggest!

1. Go to add remove program and uninstall navilog1

2. Navigate to and delete the folder I have listed in bold.

c:/program files/navilog1

A few things to help with possible threats

These are optional . But will help protect you further.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here :
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.

Hello again:

Thank you for the final advice. I am working on it this evening. One question - I did not find a program called navilog1 in the list of programs shown in the add/remove programs list or any navilog files when I browsed in the program files directory. Does this indicate anything wrong? Thanks.
