Spyware Alert/YOUR PRIVACY IS IN DANGER

When starting up my computer yesterday I started getting several pop-ups. One says that 'Windows has detected an Internet attack attempt...' and so on. After clicking on it takes me to this website http://www.safenavweb.com/index.php?sid ... pn=5&pid=1

There is another pop-up I keep getting. "Security Warning Worm.Win32.NetSky detected on your machine"... If I click on 'yes' it also trys to take me to http://www.safenavweb.com. The site never comes up.

My browser kept going to Your Privacy Guard. Now there is Spyware & Malware Protection, Privacy Protector and Error Cleaner on my desktop. They re-appear after each restart even if I delete them.

I have attached the hijackthis log and uninstall list as I saw in a similar posting. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My name is SNOWHITE and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

PLEASE READ THIS POST COMPLETELY, IT MAY MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU IF YOU COPY AND PASTE THIS POST INTO A NEW TEXT DOCUMENT OR PRINT IT FOR REFERENCE LATER

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Step #2

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

NOTE: If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.


NOTE: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time. Please uninstall one of the antivirus programs, either Norton Antivirus, or McAfee.

Step #2

Please re-open HiJackThis and click on "Do a system scan only". Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

Close Windows Explorer.

Step #3

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u3...allows end-users to run Java applications".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.

• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step #4

• The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
• Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  
• Now click on Scan Settings
• In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
  • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
  Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
  
  • Scan Options:
  Scan Archives
  Scan Mail Bases
  
• Click OK
• Now under select a target to scan:
  Select My Computer
  
• This will program will start and scan your system.
• The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
• Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save Report As... button:
• Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
• Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hello Snowhite,

I removed Norton Antivirus and afterwards the computer was running much faster. Attached below are the Kaspersky report and new HijackThis log.

Your reports are looking good, the system restore is infected and i will give you instructions for setting new and clean system restore point later. I see some leftovers by Norton antivirus, follow the instructions for removing Norton at the following link --> Norton Removal

My computer has been running a bit better but today when I was on the internet I got another message stating that my computer was running low on memory and that the system was infected with spyware. It loaded up a website like I had been getting before. However I did not write down the name and I ended up closing it. Other than that, things have been running fine but a bit slower than it used to run.

Please follow the steps below exactly in the order they are written:

Step #1

Please run this online scan:

Panda ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save it to your Desktop.

• Close all other windows before proceeding.
• Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
• When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

What DSS will do:

• create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  
• clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  
• check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with dss reports, main.txt and extra.txt.

It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although its not technically considered spyware it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including

Operating System Version
CPU Type and Speed
Memory Amount
Video Card type and Driver Version
Sound Card type and Driver Version
DirectX Version
Location that the Web Driver was installed from
It is also a MAJOR resource hog.
