B Camp,
Welcome to the forum!
I will try to help you with your PC. It is not clear that malware has anything to do with the present problem, but we can do a few things to be sure.
Print this out if you can, and read it all before starting.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://www.emachines.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.belarc advisor
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.best buy.com

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.

Reboot and check for Internet connection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
If still a problem, I would go through the following:
========================================
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to C:\Windows
Choose View, Details
Write down the KB numbers of the six or seven Update folders with the most recent dates.
The folders will have names like : $NTUninstallKB893066$
Just record the KB numbers - don't do anything.
--------------------------------------------------
From Start,Settings,Control Panel or Start,Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
At the top, make sure Show Windows Updates is checked
Highlight the following entries, one at a time, if they exist, and choose Remove :
Windows Update - KB numbers you wrote down
After each one, Reboot and try the Internet.
=======================================
This will uninstall the recent six updates until you find the ONE that is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work, post a new HJT log in a reply and let me know what's happening. You may need some different diagnostics.
For your info, there has been lots of trouble with PPC lately. Did you update People PC Bartshel at the same time?

B Camp,
I would NOT delete the Uninstall folders at this time.
Are you certain that the Show Windows Updates box at the top of the Add/Remove window was checked?

Please post a new HJT log so we can check for the Log line removals.

B Camp,

You can go into HJT and check that O8 line and get rid of it if you don't want it. (It is a legitimate toolbar).

I don't think you have a malware issue with your computer.

You might want to consider trying a Firefox download and setting it up separately as an alternative to IE, in case the defect is IE related.
It's here : http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

I am not comfortable guiding you through a Repair Install of your Windows XP.
I would suggest posting the issue at http://www/pcpitstop.com, since they have a lot of system troubleshooting experience.
They may want a reference to this thread to see what's been done here.
