chrisclarke,
Tell me if you have had the ZoneAlarm firewall very long. There have been some difficulties with slow startups.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
( Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scanner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Please post the contents of KAV.TXT

askey127, Thank you for your response. If I may elucidate on my problem, I have been using an adsl router for 9 months with no problem until 16 Oct. From then onward I was constantly losing my internet connection every few minutes and having to restart the router only for the same thing to happen again. Initially launching IE then took up to 5 mins to load, the processor light not moving at all and clicking on anything else just freezes until I get a web page, when closing and relaunching it was fine. (I am still in touch with the manufacturer of the router but nothing achieved so far) I replaced with my original modem, I keep the connection but still have the identical problem with IE. Googling with this info suggested I may have malware hence why I got to this forum.

ZoneAlarm Pro I have had since March '07, I appreciate your comments re CCleaner, I have been using that for about 2 years.
At the end of my message I have pasted the results of Kaspersky scan. You will see I have an issue on my external G drive.
Prior to my first post I uninstalled IE 7 as some google results suggested that could be the problem, it is now reinstalled.
Quite honestly I do not know whether the router problem is linked to the slow start of IE but it still occurs with the original modem. If I plug the modem into my laptop there is still the same problem with IE which prior to 16 Oct I did not have.
I am quite willing to return my router for a replacement but if that is not the cause then that is pointless. I would be very grateful if you can come up with any ideas, thank you.

chrisclarke,
Just a bit of cleanup.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Reset Options in CCleaner for Regular Use.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. Then under Internet Explorer, Uncheck "History". In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Check Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 66.98.148.65 auto.search.msn.es
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {493BEB95-444B-4482-96AB-948F45A6573E} - \

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
---------------------------------------------------------
I think your computer is free of malware

You do have a lot of different video services running at startup.
You might want to take a look at whether any were installed at about the time the trouble started.
(You can look at or remove startups with CCleaner, Tools button.)
I would ask about your problem at one of the system / hardware forums. They specialize in this kind of issue.

askey 127, Thank you for your reply. I was hoping you may have found something what was causing the problem but I think the problem is now resolved. From another forum a member asked if I was using ZA which I am, he explained that vsmon was verifying the connection, and until that completed, browsers can freeze. I disabled ZA re-booted launched my browser and my home page came up immediately, I then fitted the modem to my laptop, browser taking ages to load and unable to do anything else, disabled ZA, re-booted, home page came up right away. I replaced my adsl router which I had removed due to loss of connection and all is fine. So ZA was the problem!! I have now removed it from both PC's.
Thank you once again for your assistance. I am most grateful.
