Hi
You have some items that need to be fixed

Please read these directions throroughly before executing them. It may help to print them out.

    • Close all other windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following lines:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
      O2 - BHO: Band Class - {0007522A-2297-43C1-8EB1-C90B0FF20DA5} - (no file)
      O9 - Extra button: Ebates - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
      O15 - Trusted IP range: 206.161.125.149
      O16 - DPF: {10000000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\yhymonpu.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

      C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker <====this complete directory
      C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\yhymonpu.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Hi bunchy2356

Your log is clean, I can't spot anything threatening in it.

I would like you to do an online scan using TrendMicro Housecall.
Post back with anything that it detects but can't clean up.

Otherwise I see you run Nortons AV so I would advise you to keep it updated on a regular basis.

Sleep soundly .........after you read the following and implement anything relevant toy your system :-

Enable restore points
Turn ON System Restore.
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  5. Click Apply
  6. ClickOK.
{Update with SP2}
Visit Windows Update and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install SP2.
This is a time consuming process, even with a fast connection. If you use a dial-up connection you should consider getting a FREE copy
directly from Microsoft or get a friend with a fast connection to burn a copy of the upgrade to CD for you.

Update the OS regularly

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

Manually:

Visit Windows Update on a weekly/fortnightly REGULAR basis.

Automatically:

  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click on Automatic Updates
  4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
  5. Select the Day/Time of choice
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

Secure your web browser

  1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on
    Options.
  2. Click onSecurity
  3. Click the Internet icon
  4. Click [on color=blue]Custom Level[/color].
  5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  11. Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
  12. Click on OK
  13. Save (if asked).
  14. Click on Apply button
  15. Click on OK

Alternatively you could use another browser such as
Mozilla Firefox
Opera or
Netscape

Get Some Protection
The following programs are useful in the fight against Malware. Best of all, they're FREE.
Download and install any or all . Be warned though ---- Unless you keep them regularly updated you are living with a false
sense of security.

  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a
program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • [url=http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022-10122137.html?part=dl-spybot&subj=dl&tag=but]Spybot Search &
Destroy[/url] -Similar to Ad-Aware but more configurable and incorporates Teatime, a memory resident utility that protects the system
registry. I recommend use both of these in tandem.
  • Spyware Blaster -
Prevents the addition of ActiveX Controls on your machines by
    isolating the system registry.
  • IE_Spyad - Uses the inbuilt IE restriction policy to stop your browser
from opening web pages in a much enhanced list of undesirable addresses.
    Tutorial

A good lantiviral program is
essential.AVG) is one of the better known, and trusted antivirals.

And Finally.........Lock the door with a Firewall . XP comes with its own simple
firewall but I prefer to substitute it with
ZoneAlarm).

Remember, Paranoia is a state of mind.
I mind who watches me.

Hi bunchy2356

I see you have another post, relating to low memory.
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtop ... 2714#22714

I am not an expert in this field but here are a few thoughts that will help to speed the system up to some degree.
The first thing to say is that as
ChrisRLG wrote:256mb is small for winXP pro - so it may just be the free ram after you load windows is just that size left, HJT will show if it might be something else, if not it may show some programs loading that you do not need.

you do have a rather low amount of memory for an XPpro system (I speak with personal experience on that)

I've gone through the logs you posted to me and it now looks Malware clean, however there are lots of processes running. I will have another look and see if there are any "optional" ones that could be removed to aid performance.

Although you don't say this I suspect this may also have a graphics chip integrated onto the motherboard (I don't see the usual extra graphics utilities). These usually share system RAM and help to deplete system resources.

Has the system always run slowly or is this a new phenomenon?

Edit:
These lines are all optionally running processes which you could remove.

Run HiJackThis and run a scan only
Put a check against each of the lines you wish to remove

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [IncrediMail] C:\Program Files\IncrediMail\bin\IncMail.exe /c

Make sure all other windows are closed and click on Fix Checked.

I will not recommend removal of the associated files since you may need them later and they do not pose a threat per se.

Another reason for system slowdown is the proliferation of temporary files which are not cleared properly. This will take care of that for you:

Click Start | Run and in the Open box type cleanmgr and click OK
Select drive C: and then check all of the Temporary File Locations, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Web client/Publisher Temporary Files.
Click OK
Confirm choice
Repeat this for each of your hard disks.
Next
Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder <=== Only the files NOT the actual folder

The last step will clear out files that your computer loads routinely to help it speed up the opening of programs. The first few times you use your computer it may slow down very slightly while the prefetch directory re-populates itself.

Another quirk of a PC is that when the hard disk is over 50% full it can cause a system slowdown. HAve a look to see if there are any programs, files or fonts that you do not need. In particular if you download files they could be stored on CDs rather than the hard disk itself.

Once you have done all of the above it's worth defragmenting the harddisk. This re-arranges all of the elements stored on the disk into a more efficient layout:

  • Open My Computer
  • Highlight your Harddisk and Right click
  • Select Properties
  • Select Tools
[*]Click on Defregment Now and allow it to tidy up the harddisk.
