HiJackThis Log: Looking for a Keylogger in particular

Unread postby Kabooa » October 16th, 2007, 6:24 pm

Good day, I downloaded and started using HiJackThis in light of possibly being infected with a keylogger. Here is the logfile, I am currently running other anti-virus programs to try and find it on my own, but your help would be most appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Hi Kabooa,

Welcome to Malware Removal Forums.

As we work together to resolve your problem please read the instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them into Notepad.
If you have question please don't hesitate to ask
The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
Post your replies to this thread.

Since there may other issues with your system please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean."

What makes you suspect a keylogger is installed? Just so you are aware if one is found, due to legalities I may or may not be able to remove it for you.

You're running the BETA version of Hijackthis. We need to have the updated version. While your removing it I'll have you remove one another bad program.

Remove Unnecessary Programs
Please Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Remove these programs by clicking Remove

HijackThis v2.0.0 (BETA)
Media Pipe

Download Hijackthis 2.0 from here

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.

Rename Hijackthis:

Locate the program Hijackthis. ( C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis)
Locate the file, Hijackthis.exe or Hijackthis if you can't see the file extension
Right-click and select Rename.
Please change the name to: icmore.exe or icmore if you can't see the file extension
Then please could you post a new Hijackthis log.
*========================*

Create Uninstall List with Hijackthis
This is how you do that:
Open HiJackThis
Click on the tab "Open the Misc Tools Session"
Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
Click on the button "Save list"
Copy and past the List from notepad into your post

I do apologize. I noticed the rules for posting after posting this.

As for suspecting a keylogging program, I was browsing another forum I was new to and happened upon an interesting topic related to a game I play. I clicked the links provided (Claiming to be picutres) and was sent to a Wiki page. I then saw a few responses to the post and they claimed it was a key logger.

So I've been rather paranoid.

If I may add, I have used Ad-Aware and Ad-Watch to attempt to search for the Keylogger on my own. I have found nothing so far, however, I do not know whether or not these sorts of programs can lie dormant and undetectable by conventional means.

If they cannot, then I believe my system may be clean and I apolgize profusely for taking your time.

Hi Kabooa,

No need to appologize..this is what we are here for. Ad-Watch watches for changes in the registry and Ad-Aware does have some limitations.
Do you recall the name of the file in question?
There are commercial keyloggers (the ones I cannot help you with) that typically can be seen with Hijackthis and there are Remote Access Trojans that have keylogging capabilities. Again many of those can be seen with HJT and others cannot.
Since Hijackthis does not see 100% of everything I would like you to perform a couple of scans just to make sure nothing is hiding. One of these tools (AVG AntiSpyware) you can keep an continue to use if you wish.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/se ... 5.0.50.exe

  • Save it to yur Desktop or your normal download folder
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.

    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

[*] Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
*=========================*

Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MediaPipe P2P Loader] "C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks\mpp2pl.exe" /H

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
*=========================*

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following files: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\p2pnetworks

*=========================*

Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
  • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
  • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
  • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
  • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
  • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
  • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
  • When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
  • Click on "Report" button to view all completed scans.
  • Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
  • Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports
  • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

*=========================*

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.

Hi Kabooa,

Nothing to bad was found. A leftover registry entry and a couple files in system restore which we will clean shortly.

Uninstall Unnecessary Tools/Files
AVG Anti Spyware, this is a good scanner to use with others I have listed below. This will auto update for 30 days. Afterwards you will need to update manually before scanning. Scan weekly if you have high internet use..
NOD Online AV from add/remove programs.
*========================*

Flush System Restore
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
Select Create a Restore Point, and then click Ok

Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
Select the More Options tab
Choose the option to Clean Up System Restore and select OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created
*========================*

This is my post for when you are All Clean - which you seem to be.

But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items or completed steps)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Use a Firewall - this keeps your computer safe from hackers AS WELL AS from several computer viruses (mostly worms) which spread through the internet by using security holes of Windows. Have in mind that these are FREE FULL versions of the software and they lack of some features available in their shareware versions. Nevertheless, the FREE versions are capable of providing a basic firewall protection to your computer.
Click here for more information on Firewalls -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

Automatically:
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click on Automatic Updates
  4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
    Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
  5. Select the Day/Time of choice
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK
