ninobrowne,
Download Hijackthis 2.0 from here
  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hi ninobrowne,

Download FindAWFand save it to your desktop.
http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/FindAWF.exe
    * Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
    * It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
    * Press 1 then Enter and the FindAWF tool will begin scanning your computer for the infected AWF files and the backups the trojan created.
    * It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
    * When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt
    A copy will be made in C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Local Settings\Temp\FindAWF
    * Come back here to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

*=========================*

Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = <http://www.dell4me.com/myway
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = <http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = <http://www.dell4me.com/myway

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.whataboutadog.com

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
*=========================*

Create Uninstall List with Hijackthis
This is how you do that:
Open HiJackThis
Click on the tab "Open the Misc Tools Session"
Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
Click on the button "Save list"
Copy and past the List from notepad into your post
*=========================*

Post the following:
AWF.txt
New Hijackthis log
Uninstall List

Thanks,

Hi ninobrowne,

Confirmed, you have a downloader trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf or Downloader.Agent.ayy. This trojan replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. It then moves the legitimate file to a "bak" or backup folder.
A few more steps and you should be OK. We'll move the legit file sback to their correct place and then scan again.

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version.
We will update Java to the latest version shortly but for now the old versions need to go.

Remove Unnecessary Programs
Please Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs

Remove these programs by clicking Remove

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
My Way Search Assistant << OPTIONAL SEE NOTE

NOTE:You are running MyWebSearch (or MyBar). Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. My Web Search also known as the My Way Speedbar is the Internet Explorer toolbar part of the Fun Web Products suite of utilities such as Smiley Central, Cursor Mania, My Mail Stationary, My Mail Signature, PopSwatter, Popular Screensavers, and the My Way website portal. The toolbar allows easy access to search engine results and a 404 Error Redirector called My Total Search among other things to your browser. This is not to be confused with the IBIS Web Search toolbar. MyWay is a search toolbar that installs into Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, adding search functions and popup blocking. It reports your surfing activity anonymously to MyWay affiliates, helping them to serve targeted advertising to you. As a BHO, MyWay shares the memory that your browser uses, detects events, creates additional windows while you are surfing, and monitors your activity. When a new browser window is opened, MyWay will send a configuration request about 5k in size.

Hi ninobrowne,

We're getting close but still have some work to do.
You've picked up another piece of malware (Winbudget). I'm not sure if it was hiding or picked up while surfing. If you could limit your surfing in the meantime I would appreciate it.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware v7.5
http://free.grisoft.com/softw/70free/se ... 5.0.50.exe

  • Save it to yur Desktop or your normal download folder
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.

    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
*=========================*

Start HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: IE - {0CB66BA8-5E1F-4963-93D1-E1D6B78FE9A2} - C:\Program Files\WinBudget\bin\matrix.dll
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.whataboutadog.com

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
*=========================*

Fix AWF Infection Step 3

Copy the paths in the quote box below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
C:\Program Files\Apoint\bak
C:\Program Files\DellSupport\bak
C:\Program Files\Messenger\bak
C:\Program Files\QuickTime\bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\bak
C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\bak

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\bak
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\bak
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\bak
C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\bak

* Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
* It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
* Select Option 3 from the menu and press Enter.
* Press any key to continue.
* A Notepad document FindAWF.txt will appear with instructions to click below the line and paste the list of folders to be removed.
* Right click below this line and select Paste, to paste the list of folders copied to the clipboard earlier. Save and close the document.
* The program will proceed to remove the folders and will perform another scan for bak folders.
* It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
* When it is complete, it will open a text file in Notepad called AWF.txt.
* Please copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.
    *=========================*

    Start in Safe Mode
    Please print the instructions below or copy and paste to Notepad since you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, continually press F8.
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
    *=========================*

    Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following folder: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_04
    C:\Program Files\WinBudget

    *=========================*

    Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
    • Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
    • Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
    • Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
    • Under "Reports" select "Do not automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".
    • Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
    • Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
    • When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
    • Click on "Report" button to view all completed scans.
    • Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt.
    • Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Grisoft\AVG Antispyware 7.5\Reports
    • Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and submit the log report in your next response.

    *=========================*

    Restart your PC in Normal Mode
    *=========================*

    Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus
    http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
    Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
    • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
    • When asked, allow the activex control to install
    • Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock.
    • Click Start
    • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Un-checked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
    • Click Scan
    • Wait for the scan to finish
    • Re-enable your Anvirisus software.
    • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.

*=========================*

Please post the following;

New hijackthis log
AWF.txt
AVG AntiSpyware report
NOD32 report

Some logs can be lengthy. If needed use multiple posts

Thanks,

This is my post for when you are All Clean - which you seem to be.

But to help protect you against further infections, and also to help prevent criminals using your computer to infect other people's computers on the web, I recommend the following: (You may already have some of the items or completed steps)

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
