Re: HP cloaker.exe

Hi mayi, thank you for your help. This is not to urge you to hasten your research. I just wish you ask another favour. Could you please also reaserch whether I need to run HP's cloaker.exe twice. I am curious on why two entries for cloaker.exe from HiJackThis.log?

Hi ck,

Sorry for the delay.

Hi ck,

Step 1
Please print out or save this set of instructions as you will be rebooting the PC.

  1. Please download Fixwareout from Bleeping Computer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click to run it.
  3. Click Next, followed by Install.
  4. Once installation is done, checked (ticked) Run fixit box.
  5. Click Finish.
  6. The fix will start, follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot the PC, please do so. Your system will take longer to start, this is normal.
  7. Once your PC rebooted, go to Start > Control Panel. Double click on Network Connections.
  8. Right click on your default connection and select Properties.
  9. Select the General tab.
  10. Double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) under This connection uses the following items:
  11. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  12. Click OK twice to save the settings. Reboot when prompted to.
  13. Go to Start > Run and type in cmd.
  14. Type in the following in the code box line by line, pressing Enter after each line:
    Code: Select all
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /flushdns
    exit

Step 2

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Could you please also reaserch whether I need to run HP's cloaker.exe twice. I am curious on why two entries for cloaker.exe from HiJackThis.log?

O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: Pin.lnk = C:\hp\bin\CLOAKER.EXE (User 'Default user')
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: PinMcLnk.lnk = C:\hp\bin\cloaker.exe (User 'Default user')

Cloaker.exe is used to launch two shortcuts. They are most likely to be some HP programs.

You can access them from Start > All Programs > Startup.

If you don't use them regularly or don't use them at all, we will fix them for you later.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Fixwareout report (C:\Fixwareout\Report.txt)
  2. A new HijackThis log
  3. The Uninstall list

Fixware executed

Unread postby ck » October 5th, 2007, 12:50 pm

Mayi, Thank you for your help. I have executed the recommended procedure. Before I post the log, I just let you know that Fixware asks me to ket you know there is a file call dnsbak.reg created. Do you want me to post it. It is very long. Second, I have removed a compule of files called kdryh.exe and kdmad.exe which were created by one of the user account in c:\winodws\system32. They are fishy. There are also a few files keep on coming back called in the System32 directory called edjigaeeeaaf.*. Regarding the cloaker.exe, I do not know what is its use and I don't use it. I think it comes with the HP PC.

The following is the log from Fixware:

Hi ck,

Before I post the log, I just let you know that Fixware asks me to ket you know there is a file call dnsbak.reg created. Do you want me to post it. It is very long.

Nope, there's no need to do so.

Second, I have removed a compule of files called kdryh.exe and kdmad.exe which were created by one of the user account in c:\winodws\system32.

Do you mean that the user account is in C:\Windows\system32 folder or one of the users created these files in C:\Windows\system32 folder?

If it's the latter, please log in to the account and post a HijackThis log from there.

There are also a few files keep on coming back called in the System32 directory called edjigaeeeaaf.*

Could you please upload these files one by one to Virus Total or Jotti for a scan and post back the scan results.

Show hidden files and folders
  1. Open My Computer.
  2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
  3. Select the View tab.
  4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
  5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
  8. Click Yes when prompted.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Close My Computer.

For Virus Total

  1. Please go to Virus Total.
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32 folder and locate the first edjigaeeeaaf file.
  3. Click on Send File.

For Jotti

  1. Please go to Jotti.
  2. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32 folder and locate the first edjigaeeeaaf file.
  3. Click on Submit.
Repeat the steps if there are more edjigaeeeaaf files present.
____________________

I would also need you to rename HijackThis.exe to scanner.exe.

Open the HijackThis folder on your desktop. Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename. Type in scanner.exe and press Enter.

Double click on scanner.exe and select Do a system scan and save a logfile. Please post back this log file in your next reply.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Virus Total or Jotti's scan results of the edjigaeeeaaf.* files
  2. A new HijackThis log, after renaming HijackThis

Hello Mayi,

Thank you again. Here is the requested information.

kdryh.exe and kdmad.exe have been identified by Northan Antivirus today and removed. I could not access it anymore. NAV says they are Bloodhound.pack.7.

Hi ck,

Please save all your documents and this set of instructions as you will be required to restart the computer during the fix.

  1. Double click on the Navilog1 shortcut on your desktop to run it.
  2. Press E for English from the language Menu.
  3. It will present you with a series of instructions, read through them and press Enter.
  4. At the end, you will be shown a menu. Press 2 and press Enter.
  5. The tool will prompt you that you need to restart your computer. Let it restart your computer. If it doesn't, please do so manually.
  6. Log in to your usual account after restarting.
  7. Wait for the *** Cleaning stage complete! *** message. This takes a while.
  8. Notepad will open. Please post the contents of this Notepad file in your next reply.
Note: Your desktop should appear. If it doesn't, please press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter.

In your next reply, please post:

  1. Navilog1 log (C:\cleannavi.txt)
  2. A new HijackThis log

Hello Mayi, I may have done something wrong. I follow the procedure. Navilog did not restart the computer. I restarted as your instruction. After I log on for half an hour, there was no completion message. Desktop show as soon as I logged on. All this was done from the usual account which is not an admin account. Please advise next step.

The following is the log from Navilog:

Hi ck,

Could you please double check with you that the HijackThis log you've last posted is a complete one?

A lot of processes that are needed for the stability of Windows have gone missing.

Hello Mayi, The Hijackthis log I posted was created from the usual account I use day to day. I have compare it with the one from the admin account. They do have differences. The following is the one generated from the admin account. Could you please advise should I run all the scan and fix using my regular account which is no admin privilege, admin account or in save mode. Thank you.
