While surfing my normal web-sites - I get directed (hijack) to a web-site called "DRIVECLEANER". There I am being told that if I purchase their "DRIVECLEANER" software product I can correct this problem.

I run following software daily:

Norton 2006 antvirus
WebRoot Spysweeper
Web Root Window Washer
A-Square Free
Ad-Ware 2007 Free

Here's copy of HijackThis:

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

Hi Again:

I have attached your snapshot of DSS, main.txt and extra.txt. Also, for your information, I am a beach surfer and am surfing selected surf web-sites for info on waves and weather conditions in my local area(New York ). In chatting with other surfers, I discovered that everyone hitting this website is getting redirected to :DRIVECLEANER" website. I am attaching the URL address so you can review their chats on this problem.

Hi

Looking at your link, the problem seems to be with the websites, not your computer. We are still a little unsure about one thing and want a closer look at your Hosts file.

Step 1:

Click on Start>Run and copy/paste the contents of the text box below into the run dialogue box then press ok.

Code: Select all
cmd /c copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"

Post back with the contents of hosts.txt which will have appeared on your Desktop.

Step 2:

I see you have two anti-vrus's installed, but you have disabled Norton. I would recommend you completely remove one. Is Norton still under subscription?

Step 3:

I see you are using Wild Tangent. It is not malware, but is sometimes thought to bring malware along. Wild Tangent is a video game software company specializing in online games. It has even made a partnership with AOL to include itself as part of the AOL Instant Messenger for their AIM games section. The WildTangent Web Driver is their technology that allows you to play 3D games over the Internet. Although it’s not technically considered spyware, it does have built in components to update itself and gather information about the computer system including
  1. Operating System Version
  2. CPU Type and Speed
  3. Memory Amount
Video Card type and Driver Version
  4. Sound Card type and Driver Version
  5. DirectX Version
Location that the Web Driver was installed from
  6. It is also a MAJOR resource hog.
For more information, see WildTangent Removal Instructions and Help and Inside Wild Tangent-Delivering High-End 3-D Content To A Web Site Near You.
Unless you are an extremely avid games player, I recommend you uninstall Wild Tangent: To uninstall Wild Tangent:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Wild Tangent, click Remove.
  4. Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

Step 4:

I see that Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player and Viewpoint Toolbar is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Manager, click Remove.
  4. Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

Step 5:

It appears you have removed the NetZero toolbar or it is no longer functional - if this is the case then please include these lines for checking in HijackThis to clean the leftover registry entries, as described in Step 6.

O2 - BHO: X1IEHook Class - {52706EF7-D7A2-49AD-A615-E903858CF284} - C:\Program Files\NetZero\qsacc\X1IEBHO.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: ZeroBar - {F5735C15-1FB2-41FE-BA12-242757E69DDE} - C:\Program Files\NetZero\toolbar.dll (file missing)

Step 6:

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint\Toolbar Runtime\3.8.0\IEViewBar.dll

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked exit HijackThis, and reboot your computer.

Step 7:

Scan with HijackThis and post the new log in your next reply.

Hi

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I just have a couple of questions.

1)Is NetZero a former isp you used or your current one? You have two isp's listed, Netzero and Verizon. If we uninstall NetZero your start pages will be changed, though you can reset them to whatever you please.

2)What is the position on your anti-virus? Do you wish to continue with Spysweepers anti-virus add-in, or are you a subscriber to Norton?

We made a slight mistake with the command-line so let's try again.

Go to Start>Run and highlight the contents of the box below then use CTRL+C to copy them and CTRL+V to paste them into the run dialogue box.

Code: Select all
cmd /c copy C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts "%userprofile%\desktop\hosts.txt"

Click OK, notepad will then open with your host file. Copy and paste the whole Hosts file in your next reply.

Hello

The good news is, there is no sign of any malware on your computer.

I must stress the importance of only having one anti-virus running on your computer. As well as using up resources, the two of them will fight with each other to do the same job, thus conflicting. Instead of giving you the imagined extra protection, they will actually leave you more open to possible infection.

I would advise, if Norton is under subscription, to disable the Spysweeper add-in, and use that program for what it was does best, guarding against spyware.

I see the Viewpoint Toolbar is still installed. You may have decided to keep that, but if not, you can follow my previous post on Viewpoint for removing it.

Here are some free programs I recommend, although you will not need them all.

Spybot Search and Destroy
Download it from here . Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Make sure your Windows is ALWAYS up to date!

An unpatched Windows is vulnerable and even with the "best" Antivirus and Firewall installed, malware will find its way through.
So visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to download and install the latest updates.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Follow this list and your potential for being infected will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
