Can't Log Into All 3 Messenger Programs

Unread postby wmvs » September 18th, 2007, 10:04 am

When I try to log into AIM, it says "server error occured".

MSN & Yahoo messenger both crash when I try to log in.

Could there be some spyware that is blocking the ports necessary to runs these programs? Everything else seems to be working fine, and I am currently running SuperAntiSpyware to see if anything comes up. HELP ME!!

I'm Elrond and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please only use this topic for your replies on this problem. Do not start another thread.
Please note that the fixes we will use are specific to your problems on this computer and should only be used for this problem on this computer.
These things need to be properly researched and a complete fix for many malware problems can take some time and be spread over a number of posts, so please be patient and try to see it through to the end.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

In light of this it would be wise for you to back up any files and folders that you don't want to lose before we start.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default) Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.
It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Please note that I will be off line for about 26 hours (sundown Friday until nightfall Saturday my local time)

Does not sound good but please post a HijackThis log.

Do as follows:
Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required

I've decided that I'm going to format the drive. I'm too afraid of these keyloggers.

I was afraid that it could come to that.

This is the warning I give when I find key loggers and back door trojans that can steal information.

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but unfortunately, you have multiple infections, including a backdoor. This gives intruders complete control of your computer, logging key strokes, stealing information, etc. :(
You are strongly advised to do the following immediately!:
  • Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change *all* of your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.
Because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure it can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your OS and would like me to attempt to clean your machine, I will be happy to do so.

To help you make a more informed decision, please read the following articles:
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask

Please let me know your decision and we'll get started with clean up if that's what you choose

The above is a standarized warning that I give and parts are not pertinent as you have decided to reformat. However I thought that you could be interested in some of the references about our reasoning.

This is what I normally tell people when they are clean but it has some information that can be of help when you set up the reformated computer. It could help you to somewhat reduce the risk of the same thing happening again.
  1. If you are using Intrnet Explorer v. 6
Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
There are good reasons to upgrade to Internet Explorer v. 7. Do look into this. You can find a lot of information about it on Microsofts website.
  2. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Once a day is a good idea). If you do not update your anti virus software it will not be able to catch new variants that come out.
  4. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Windows Firewall is not recomended.
Be restrictive with granting access to the internet. If you are unsure if the program really needs the access, test it by denying the access and see if this has any negative effects. If not, make the block permanent.
  5. Never run two Antivirus programs or two Firewalls at the same time. They can interfere with each other and cause problems.
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently or better yet set computer for automatic updates.
  7. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
  8. Read and follow the sugestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miek ... ntion.html It has recomendations for programs to use and will give you more information on some of the points above.
  9. Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

If you need information about reformatting your computer see: http://spyware-free.us/tutorials/reformat

Sorry that I could not help you more. :(

Let me know when you have read this.
It will then be moved and will be avaiable in the Archived Malware Removal room.
