The log looks much better, use which backup software you are most comfortable with, it's great you have a external Hard drive
to back up to, I think that's the best way, post back when your ready and we will continue

Hi ya, I've created an HP Recovery disk set so that the machine can be recovered in the event of a drive failure and I've used the Freecom backup software to back up all my niece's music etc. What would you recommend as an effective protection package (bearing in mind I have already installed Norton 360) going foward? :) Cheers, DO

Hi DO498

You have most things covered with Norton 360, but have a look at the free Spyware Blaster and Spybot Seach and destroy below,
keep the AVG AS for on demand scanning

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.

This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis
just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Please have a look at the link below, it gives good advice on Internet security

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Afternoon DFW, Thanks very much for the "protection pointers". I've done all that has been recommended with the exception of the Hosts file utility. This is something I'll get sorted in the next couple of days. Loading up the machine with WinPatrol, SpyBot etc has (naturally) slowed down the start-up process again, but I'll use the machine as much as poss to see that it's normal run mode is no longer compromised. Thanks very much indeed for helping me out with this machine; I've not seen anything untoward for a while. Herewith (hopefully!) my last HJT log. (Apart from the fact that my brother has a dog-slow laptop he's thinking of punting in my direction to sort out!! :( ) Thanks again for all your help, Cheers,,, DO

The HJT log looks fine, as you have winpatrol you could turn off the tea timer protection in Spybot search and destroy,
which may help with the speed.

Open up Spybot, on the mode menu click advanced, then click yes.

Now on the bottom left click tools, now click on resident and uncheck tea timer protection.

Go back to the mode menu and unselect advanced mode.

close Spybot

Restart your system.

If your still having issues with speed this below will help.

Default Windows XP visual settings may look nice but they slow your system down.
Here is how to keep the eye candy look of Windows XP while getting a snapper feel.

Instructions - Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced" tab, in the "Performance" section select "Settings".
Leave only the following checked:

Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Smooth edges of screen fonts
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons
Use Common Tasks In Folders

Then select Apply and OK

This will help a lot

Go to Start, Run, type services.msc and press enter.
Left-click on the status bar twice to filter all the started service to the top.
Double left-click on the Service Name you wish to change. Change the "Startup Type" to either Automatic, Manual or Disabled then select "Apply" and "OK", repeat for all of the following:

Disabled this Services

Indexing Service

If you have not ran a CHKDSK and DEFRAG for 5 to 6 weeks do it now

Check your Harddrive for errors

Go to your C Drive, Right click and select properties

Click on the tools tad

Click on check now button

Tick automaticly fix system errors, then click start

You will get a warning that it can not be run,

Click yes to run the next time you start windows

Now restart your system, so CHKDSK can now run.

Defragment your drive. Go to Start > Accessories > System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
Highlight the drive you installed XP on, usually C >click the Defragment button.
This will take a while. When finished shut down and restart.

Hope this helps.

If you think your brothers laptop is infected or would just like a check up, please post a HJT log..

Hello DFW, Now that we are all done and dusted - I reckon (!) - I have ATF Cleaner, AVG, Winpatrol, SpyBot, SpyBlaster, Norton 360 and Kaspersky (although I can't locate the .exe for kaspersky for some reason!). WinPatrol and Norton are running all the time. Do you recommend that I tell my niece to run (any of) the others weekly/periodically/on suspicion? Cheers, DO

I would run a weekly scan with AVG Anitispyware and Spybot search and destroy as a matter of routine, run ATF cleaner also every few days to keep the system
free of useless files, or each day if using the Internet alot. The kaspersky is a online scanner (ActiveX) which can be removed in
Add/Remove programs, you can locate the kaspersky ActiveX by going to Internet options, programs tab, then manage add-ons, it does not run on your system
until you go to the kaspersky online scanner, it will then just update, I would leave it on just to run a scan if you ever needed a second option on something,
but it does not remove anything. Winpatrol and spyware blaster just sit there protecting, no manual scanning,

Norton 360 should be set by default to auto update and also run a weekly scan. If you ever think or suspect that something has infected you, run all start away.
I would also recommend that you remove HJT, as it is a very powerful tool, and could cripple any system in untrained hands, just go to Add/Remove Programs,
and run the uninstaller, and then remove the HJT folder from the Programs folder on the C Drive. you could always download a fresh copy if needed.
But the most inportant point is to keep all programs updated, and run windows update regularly.

Hope this helps.

Hello DFW, The laptop is now back with my niece, so there's nothing more we can do now (till the next time!) I guess this topic will be archived in due course. If the machine plays up again (or my brother hands over his machine for a check-up) do I re-open this topic (from archive?) or start a new one? Cheers, DO
