Hi mynameisdaniel,

Your machine is infected with a worm, and you probably have a copy of the worm on a removable storage device which is why your machine has been reinfected.

In your next post, please tell me how many removable storage devices you have, such as MP3 players, USB drives, external hard drives and other similar devices. Also, let me know what you used to back up your files before reinstalling - did you use CDs, DVDs, an external hard drive etc.

It appears that you have two antivirus programs running - AVG and Antivir. Running one antivirus program is essential, but having two can cause conflicts, slow your system down and even cause stability problems without improving your security. You should use just one antivirus program and if you want an "2nd opinion", use an online scanner like Kaspersky's.

If you have two antivirus programs installed, then before proceeding, please remove one of them.
Please make sure you choose one currently capable of receiving updates, because an antivirus program without updates cannot protect your system effectively. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
reg export hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies "%userprofile%\desktop\export.reg"

A file called export.reg should appear on your Desktop. Please open this file by right-clicking it and selecting Edit. Copy and paste the contents into your next response.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the uninstall list, the export.reg output and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know about your removable storage devices.

Hi mynameisdaniel,

We'll clean your USB drive and ipod, but we can't of course clean infected files from your DVDs. It is however quite possible that the DVDs are clean as the infection could easily have come back via your USB drive and/or ipod but we don't know yet - please do not use the DVDs until we've checked them.

It's important you do everything in this post and do it in the order that it is written, otherwise we may have to start again so please take your time and if you have any problems, please stop and let me know what's happened.

NOTE: Before you start, please make sure you do not have your ipod or USB drives inserted in the computer, and don't insert them until I ask you to.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
reg add hklm\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer /v "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" /t REG_DWORD /d 0x000000ff

Hi mynameisdaniel,

i have gone through all the steps, although i didnt find any files in the explorer folder, i did find the ones mentioned on the usb and ipod and deleated them

That sounds fine :) you can now delete the requested-files...cab file from your Desktop.

Please open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{25864158-329E-434B-B24F-3DA6F300D30A}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\flashplay.bho]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{25864158-329E-434B-B24F-3DA6F300D30A}]

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi mynameisdaniel,

It looks like one of those bad files is still present, please use Windows Explorer to delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\flashplay.dll

Please confirm in your next response whether you were able to delete this or not.

You have uTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours. You can remove uTorrent by deleting the program folder:
C:\Program Files\uTorrent

Once complete, please let me know if you were able to delete the file flashplay.dll

Hi mynameisdaniel,

Yes I think your system is clean now, however there are some important final steps:

Please delete sfp.zip and it's associated folder, requested-files.....cab and fix.reg from your Desktop. Then empty your recycle bin.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Once you have completed those steps I recommend you check your DVDs for infected files. The Kaspersky online scanner appears to detect this infection so I would use that to scan each of them. Your avi files should be safe but any program file should be carefully checked before use. If you find an infected file on a (write-once) DVD, copy the uninfected files and destroy the DVD.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.
