Slow system - can't update Spybot S & D

Unread postby markn » August 10th, 2005, 8:41 pm

I am having trouble with a Dell pentium 4 windows xppro sytem running very slow. Have run many spyware/adware programs but still slow. Before I post a hijackthis log, I wanted to make sure I had tried everything else - but for some reason Spybot S & D will not update. It gives an error that says "Error retrieveing update info file! Socket Error #10061 Connection refused" I have redownloaded and reinstalled the program, and it displays something about a proxy server problem - yet I can update everything else. I'm running McAffe, PC Bug Doctor, Zone Alarm, Ad-aware 6, Microsoft Antispyware & Spyware Doctor.

Hi Markn
I'm Nick and I'll try to help you out.

Please download the latest version of HiJackThisfrom the following link:

HijackThis Download Site

Once it is downloaded, extract the zip file to c:\hjt and navigate to the c:\hjt folder. Now double-click on Hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then, when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Hi markn
I can't see much wrong with your log other than that you have a lot of processes running in the background. That will eventually slow down the system due to lack of resources.

These programs can prevent malware clearing. Please disable them if you have them running.
Because you will compromise your protection you should disconnect from the 'net while you carry out these instructions.

Spybot S&D's Teatimer

Open Spybot S&D
Click Mode in the toolbar
Select Advance Mode
Click Tools
ClickResident
Uncheck the box next to Resident Tea-Timer
Close Spybot S&D
Reboot your machine.

Don't forget to re-start Spybot S&D's Teatimer when your machine is clean and undo the changes above.

AdWatch

Open AdAware SE.
Click AdWatch User Interface.
ClickTools and Preferences.
Uncheck the boxes against both Active and Automatic.

Don't forget to re-start AdWatch when your machine is clean by re-checking the boxes.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click Tools
Click Settings.
Click Real-time Protection.
Uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
Click Save
Close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar
Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

Don't forget to re-start Microsoft AntiSpyware when your machine is clean and undo the changes above.

I don't use McAffe or PC Bug Doctor so don't have exact instructions but you should disable them while you carry out the fix and then re-activate them afterwards.

Run HijackThis and do a Scan Only
Put a check at the start of the following line

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride =<local>
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {327C2873-E90D-4c37-AA9D-10AC9BABA46C} - (no file)

Make sure all other windows are closed and then..
click on Fixed Check

Reboot
Run HJT again and post a new log here for inspection.

Let me know if Spybot will update now.

You also seem to have lots of anti spyware programs loaded (McAfee, SpywareDoctor,Pestpatrol etc.) This would cause a large overhead on your processing power. I would recommend that you choose one of the antiviral programs and one trojan hunter to run in the background and then use the others manually to clear up anything that gets through.

Nikkj,

I followed your instructions and below is my new hijack file. I still don't seem to be able to update Spybot - it gives me the same error. It's weird cause I can go online - redownload it, etc, but even a fresh download won't update the definitions, etc. On AdAware, my version doesn't let me access AdWatch. Do I need to purchase an upgrade. As you can see I have disabled most anti spyware, it sounds like my efforts to stop spyware from clogging my computer have actually clogged my computer. Let me know what you think.

Thanks, Markn

Hi markn
I'm looking at the log and will report back.

I haven't upgraded my Adaware, I use it once a week to check my system- but the choice is yours, you are already protected by using TeaTimer.

The Spybot problem is puzzling me. What version are you using?
Here's something you could try:

Run Spybot. Click Mode and select Advanced. Click the Settings button on the left side. Click the Setting button that is under File Sets. Scroll down to Web update and uncheck Use proxy to connect to the update server.

Close and Restart Spybot and try to download the updates.

Manual updates are here in the form of a self-ectracting zip file - http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html - to keep you updated until the problem is resolved.

Hi
VERRY sorry for the delay in responding to you. I got distracted by real world issues and I thought I'd already posted you with a reply

Did the manual upgrades work?
There are a few lines in your log that need to be taken care of.

  • Close all other programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dl ... r=iesearch
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.com/
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System\panels\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = c:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\System\panels\blank.htm

  • Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
  • Reboot
  • Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

Nikkj,

I too got busy. Thanks for the new info - I'll work on it and post a new log. The other changes have helped, although my system still seems slow.

Hi Mark
Your log is clean and I can't find any reason there for your update problem. Personaly, I would say that this is a firewall issue. You could try disabling the firewall and see if you can update (don't forget to re-instate the firewall straight away). Failing that I'd continue with manual updates whenever you want to run Spybot.

Good luck.

The following is general advice I give at this stage:
You have a clean Log. Sleep soundly .........after you do the following :-

Enable restore points
Turn ON System Restore.

  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the System Restore tab.
  4. Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
  5. Click Apply
  6. ClickOK.

{Update with SP2}
Visit Windows Update and follow the onscreen instructions to download and install SP2.
This is a time consuming process, even with a fast connection. If you use a dial-up connection you should consider getting a FREE copy
directly from Microsoft or get a friend with a fast connection to burn a copy of the upgrade to CD for you.

Update the OS regularly

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

Manually:

Visit Windows Update on a weekly/fortnightly REGULAR basis.

Automatically:

  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click on Automatic Updates
  4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
  5. Select the Day/Time of choice
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

Secure your web browser

  1. Open Internet Explorer and click on the Tools menu and then click on
    Options.
  2. Click onSecurity
  3. Click the Internet icon
  4. Click on Custom Level.
  5. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  6. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  7. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  8. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  9. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  10. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  11. Change the Allow paste operations via script to Disable
  12. Click on OK
  13. Save (if asked).
  14. Click on Apply button
  15. Click on OK

Alternatively you could use another browser such as
Mozilla Firefox
Opera or
Netscape

Get Some Protection
The following programs are useful in the fight against Malware. Best of all, they're FREE.
Download and install any or all . Be warned though ---- Unless you keep them regularly updated you are living with a false
sense of security.

  • Ad-Aware SE - This is a
program that scans for and removes known spyware from your machine.
  • Spybot Search &
Destroy -Similar to Ad-Aware but more configurable and incorporates Teatime, a memory resident utility that protects the system
registry. I recommend use both of these in tandem.
  • Spyware Blaster -
Prevents the addition of ActiveX Controls on your machines by
    isolating the system registry.
  • IE_Spyad - Uses the inbuilt IE restriction policy to stop your browser
from opening web pages in a much enhanced list of undesirable addresses.
    Tutorial

A good antiviral program is essential.AVG is one of the better known, and trusted, antivirals.

And Finally.........Lock the door with a Firewall . XP comes with its own simple firewall but I prefer to substitute it with
ZoneAlarm.

Remember, Paranoia is a state of mind.
I mind who watches me.
