Hi last night I accidentally clicked on something and it prompted me to dl the video codec v1.4. Ever since then I have been getting all sorts of programs/popups. Luckily my norton blocked my homepage from being changed. I am a not a computer expert but do know enough to get this cleaned up. It has been a couple of years or so since i have had any problems (with an older pc) but I feel like if someone would please take the time to help my out I would greatly appreciate it. Any help out there would be greatly appreciated to get my pc running good again. Thanks for your time!

Hi alexmlane, and welcome to Malware Removal!

Please do the following...

1. I need to see another log from HijackThis.
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Next click on Open uninstall manager.
  • Press the Save list button.
  • Save the file to your desktop, with the default name of uninstall_list
  • Copy & Paste the entire contents of that file in your in your next post.

2. Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip
Extract all the files to your Destop. A folder named SmitfraudFix will be created on your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

3. Please post Uninstall list and the SmitfraudFix report.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
  • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
  • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
    • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
    • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
    • Next to Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
    • Wait until you see the Update succesfull message.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and uncheck Start with Windows.
  • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.

Hi, I did everything in order just as you asked and it seems to be running perfect. Can I donate some money somewhere to you or this website or anywhere else on your behalf??? I dont work for free and my time isnt cheap so I would like to donate something. Please let me know if I need to do anything else or if you see anything out of whack! THANKS!

One thing that I was unable to do was on the AVG Anti-spyware. I was unable to change my items (they were only medium risk and not high risk) to quarantine. The only thing it would let me do is delete them and it didnt give me a prompt to save it either. I tried 4x but the scan ran for an hour each time so I said the heck with it. Here are my other logs....Thanks again!!!!

Hi alexmlane,

Can I donate some money somewhere to you or this website or anywhere else on your behalf??? I dont work for free and my time isnt cheap so I would like to donate something.

Thank you! That is very generous. You can donate to the site via this Link.

Don't worry about it! :)

Just a little left to do...

1. You have a P2P filesharing program installed.
  • Many of these programs come with unwanted components bundled with them.
  • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I recommend you uninstall all forms of P2P programs via Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

2. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

Adobe Reader 7.0.5 Language Support
Adobe Reader 7.0.9
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
LimeWire 4.9.7
<-- warning in 1st point.

3. Download the latest version Adobe Reader.

4. Apart from that, the HijackThis log is clean.

Are there any other problems or questions I can help with?
