Hello Swati,

I see that Ares is installed on your computer. While Ares is a clean P2P program, there's no guarantee that the files downloaded are. Please refrain from using it while cleaning your computer to prevent getting more infections.

A list of clean and infected P2P programs can be found at Malware Removal and Spyware Info.

The risks of using a P2P program are stated in this Sourceforge website and Information Week article.

You are also using 2 antivirus programs. Please choose to keep either AVG Antivirus or McAfee Antivirus. Uninstall either ONE of them via Add/Remove Programs.

Step 1

1. Please open HijackThis.
2. Click on Open the Misc Tools section.
3. Under System tools, select Open process manager.
4. Locate C:\heap41a\svchost.exe. Click once to select it. Click on the Kill process at the bottom.
5. Close HijackThis.

Step 2

Please open Notepad and copy and paste the following in the Code box into Notepad.

Code: Select all

Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box, copy and paste in fix.reg
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save.

Double click on fix.reg. It will prompt you about merging. Click Yes.

After merging the registry file, please check that you are able to do the following and proceed to the next step, otherwise, please do not continue and post back.

1. Open My Computer.
2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
3. Select the View tab.
4. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.
5. Select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck (untick) Hide extensions of known file types.
7. Uncheck (untick) Hide protected operating system files (Recommended).
8. Click Yes when prompted.
9. Click OK.
10. Close My Computer.
11. Open My Computer again.
12. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
13. Select the View tab.
14. Scroll down to Hidden files and folders.

Check that it's not reset back to Do not show hidden files and folders. Please also check that the Hide extensions of known file types and Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) boxes are not ticked as well.

Note: If the settings keeps getting reset back, please do not continue and post back.

Step 3

Please print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.

Restart your computer into Safe Mode by following the instructions below:

1. When you hear the computer beeps once, start pressing F8.
2. A boot menu will appear shortly.
3. Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
4. Windows will now load.
5. Log in to your usual account.

Step 4

Please delete these folders.

C:\heap41a
C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Username>\Local Settings\Temp\MICROSOFTPOWERPOINT

If you use a thumbdrive, please plug it in. Hold down the Shift key while inserting it to prevent it from auto running.

Delete these files if they are there:

autorun.inf
MicrosoftPowerPoint.exe

Restart your computer back to Normal Mode.

1. Open HijackThis
2. Select Do a system scan and save a logfile. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Don't exit HijackThis yet.

1. Click on the Config... button at the bottom right hand corner.
2. At the top, click on the Misc Tools button.
3. Look under System tools.
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
5. Click on the Save list... button.
6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
7. Notepad will open. Please post this list in your next reply.

1. A new HijackThis log
2. The Uninstall list
