Unread postby rjwill » September 4th, 2007, 3:50 pm

A lot of things keep popping up on my computer, the interface for many of them seem as if they are trying to be passed off as part of the Windows Antivirus Utilities, but they seem out of place. I also have a few other problems, like my internet explorer keeps crashing, and my desktop background keeps getting changed to a black screen that has a spyware warning in red lettering. I did all of the scans that were suggested before posting the HijackThis log. So here is my log. Please help me.

Hello ...welcome to Malware Removal. I will try and help you clean this computer...if you have questions as we go along, please stop and ask!

You seem to have TWO anti-virus programs installed and running...Symantec and a-squared. Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one Anti-Virus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time, however I would recommend that you consider uninstalling one of them...if your Symantec product is paid for and up to date, that would probably be your best bet to keep.

Before we get started, you might want to print out these instructions as we will be in safe mode later, and this webpage will be unavailable to you.

Also, we need to set your system to reveal 'hidden files':

Reveal Hidden Files

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • SelectTools menu
  • Click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Check Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
  • Click Yes.
  • Click OK.

1. Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.

Close AVG for now, we will use it in safe mode later.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

That looks better, but there's still more to do:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-d9e3-4bc6-a0bd-3d0ca4be5271} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000012-890e-4aac-afd9-eff6954a34dd} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {2d7cb618-cc1c-4126-a7e3-f5b12d3bcf71} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {51641ef3-8a7a-4d84-8659-b0911e947cc8} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {e9147a0a-a866-4214-b47c-da821891240f} - (no file)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

2. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

3. Copy and paste the Kaspersky scan results along with a new HJT log in your next post.

Trouble with Kaspersky

Unread postby rjwill » September 6th, 2007, 3:18 pm

I tried running the Kaspersky Online Scanner, but during the install, a window pops up that says, "The file '002E08D9.key' on (Unknown) is needed." It prompts me to find the file either by typing in the path or browsing, but I dont know where to get it. What can I do?

Googling The file '002E08D9.key' on (Unknown) is needed led me to three other HJT logs where people reported the same problem with Kaspersky...wonder if something is wrong at the Kaspersky site?

Let's try this online scan instead:

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

I'll also need another HJT log with the Panda Scan results...

Welcome back...I was afraid that we lost you... :D

Well, the HJT log is clean...how is your computer running? Any problems?

The Panda Scan found some Vundo remnants and some other things we need to 'clean up':

1. Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed folders, then right-click to select them and click delete

C:\VundoFix Backups
C:\program files\amsys
c:\program files\e-zshopper

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

c:\windows\system32\ESHOPEE.exe
c:\windows\system32\msole32.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Dell User\Local Settings\Temp\onudihxl.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Dell User\Local Settings\Temp\sjvgqkhd.dll

Please let me know if there are files that you cannot delete.

2. Please do this:
  • Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34546}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34546}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes, and this will clear the registry entries left behind by the malware.

3. Let me know what problems you may still be having with your system...the HJT log appears 'clean'. If your system is running well, we can finish up.

I havent really had any noticeable problems with my computer since the first or second response that you gave me. Now, I just want to be sure that everything else thats needs to be removed is gone. So if you dont see any other problems, by all means lets finish up.

Also, on my home computer, I havent really been having problems other than the occasional pop-up, but since you guys did such a great job with this I wanted to post my HJT file to make sure that I havent got anything lurking. I certainly download a lot more files at home, so it is probably likely that I have some issues there. Should I post that on this thread or on a separate one. And if I dont have any real problems, is it even worth our time to post it?

Thanks again.

fix.reg file

Unread postby rjwill » September 13th, 2007, 12:41 pm

One more thing. What do I do with the fix.reg file that is on my desktop. Can I delete it, or do I have to move it somewhere?

Thanks

So I completed the steps. Here is the lastest HJT scan report.

It looks clean to me....with the exception of this file/process:

C:\Columbus\Ibs\ibs2500.exe

It wasn't in your previous HJT logs, and I cannot search and find any information on this file/process...do you know what it is or relates to? If you do not know what it is, we can always have the file scanned to make sure it isn't malware...let me know.

Great! With the one exception noted above, I beleive your system to be 'clean'...so at the end of this post I'll include the finish up instructions! You can delete the fix.reg file, and remove or delete any tools I had you download to assist with cleaning your computer. The AVG Anti-spyware is a free 30-day trial, feel free to do as you please at the end of the trial. The ATF file cleaner is a free temp-file cleaning program that's handy to have aroound, but you can do with it as you please also.

It would be best to handle separate computers in separate threads to avoid confusion...feel free to start another thread for your home computer and either I or another qualified individual will look at it for you. On occasion we can see something in a HJT log of a malware nature without symptoms, but usually that isn't the case.

You are welcome... :D

Your HJT appears clean and I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd for Zoned Out - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection
