I can't get rid of 'AV System Care' and its pop-ups

Unread postby rukar » August 31st, 2007, 5:24 pm

Dear friends

I have a Toshiba A100 Series laptop with the Windows XP Media Centre Edition operating system. I also have VirusScan anti-virus software running on the computer.

Initially, I started getting pop-ups for strange advertisements, and then shortly thereafter a "WARNING" sign came up that said that my computer might be "at risk." It then asked if I wanted to run AVSystemCare software to detect problems. I clicked on Cancel, but it then supposedly run some type of virus scan, which said I have numerous problems.

One of the specific pop-ups says: "NOTICE: if your computer is infected, you could suffer data loss, erratic PC behavior, PC freezes and crashes. Detect and remove viruses before they activate themselves on your PC to prevent all these problems. Do you want to install AVSystemCare to scan your PC for malware now? (Recommended)"

Since then the above message comes up every time I use Internet Explorer and I keep getting pop-ups all the time until eventually Internet Explorer crashes. In addition, I've had to uninstall E-mule from my computer because it kept crashing as well.

This is my HijackThis log:

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

My name is Simon V., and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happens.
I am currently looking over your log. As I am a trainee, everything that I post to you must be checked by an Admin or Moderator. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long. I will post back shortly with a potential fix.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

    Hi :)

    • If RogueRemover did find something, it will present a list of detected items.
    • Click Remove selected.
    • Click YES at the prompt.
    • Click Ok when it informs you it's saved a logfile.
    • Wait for removal to complete, then close RogueRemover.
    • A log will be saved here:
      • C:\Program Files\RogueRemover\RRLog******.txt
    • (Note: ****** is the time when you ran RogueRemover)
    Make an Uninstall List
  • To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

Hi Simon

Sorry for the delay but I was away for the weekend and I just got back home. Thank you for your help again. Rogue Remover did not detect any items. I forgot to tell you that I'd already run Rogue Remover, Ad-Aware SE Personal, SUPERAntispyware Free Edition, a-squared, Spybot S&D, and Windows KB890830 - V1.31.exe on my computer before I talked to you and none of them had fixed the problem. To be honest I don't know much about computers' security but I read stuff on the Internet before I got in touch with you guys and I tried to do what other people did to get rid of those annoying pop-ups.

Anyway this is the Uninstall List as follows:

    Hi :)

Ok that’s good. We probably have an infection here that won't be cleaned that easily, so let’s look a bit deeper, to see what’s going on.

    Download and Run Blacklight

  • Download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) to your desktop from here.
    • Open it and click Accept Agreement.
    • Click Scan.
    • After the scan is complete, click Next, then Exit.
    • It will create a log on the desktop named fsbl-xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan). Please post that report in your next reply.

    Hi :)

    Just as I expected ;)

  • I see some programs in your Uninstall List (mCore, and all other programs with a small 'm' at the start) that come preloaded with Dell computers, and you have a Toshiba laptop. Are you aware of this?
  • There is quite a bit to do in this post, and it would probably be a good idea to print these instructions, because you will be rebooting your computer and won’t have internet access during Safe Mode.
  • Important: Before anything else, please move fsbl.exe from your desktop to your C:\ drive. To do this, right-click on fsbl.exe and choose Cut. Then double-click on My computer, and double-click on your C: drive. Then right-click anywhere and choose Paste.

  • Download BFU.zip from here.

    • Right click on BFU.zip and click Extract all.
    • Extract it to C:\BFU.
    • Right click here and choose Save Link as to download EGDACCESS.bfu by Metallica.
    • Save it to C:\BFU as EGDACCESS.bfu.

Hi again :)

So far so good. I've been using Internet Explorer and I'm not getting those annoying pop-ups or that message from AVsystemcare at the moment. I will keep an eye on it for the next few days and will let you know how it's all going.

Thank you so much for all your help, I will be in touch within the next few days.

PS: I will definitely make a donation to your website as soon as I get the all clear from you as you've been such an enormous help. I really don't think I could have done it without you.

Thank you again.

Rukar ;)

    Hi,

That’s looking very good :) To be sure you’re absolutely clean, I would like to run one last scan.

    Update Java

  • Your Java software is out of date. Follow these instructions to update it:
    • Go to Start and click on Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
    • Remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    • Then download and install Java Runtime Environment Version 6u2.
    Run Kaspersky Online Scan
  • Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
        Select My Computer
    • The program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop, and post it in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Simon ;)

I have done what you asked for, I hope it's ok but I just wanted to mention that although I'm still not getting pop-ups or messages from AVSystemcare, my laptop is working very slow and when I use more than one application at the same time it crashes and I have to close one of the applications so that I can carry on using the other one (e.g. like when I use Emule and a-square at the same time). Also I keep having a problem that I already had before: every time I turn on my laptop I get a message from the Windows Automatic Updates tool telling me that there are new updates but when I click to download the new updates it says that the tool could not download 'Windows XP Service Pack 3' or something like that. The automatic updates is set to search for new updates just once a week but this happens every time I turn on the computer...is this normal?

Anyway this is the log from the kaspersky virus scanner:

Hi :)

Can you give me the exact error message Windows Update gives you at startup? I will then look if I can find a solution.

To free up resources, you can disable some programs running at startup. These are all optional removals, so read the descriptions, and decide which ones you do not need running at startup. If you want to keep a program running at startup, do not check the line in HijackThis.

Open HijackThis, perform a system scan and read the info about the optional removals below:

[*]ALCMTR.EXE process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. Alcxmntx.exe is installed with hardware drivers for the Realtek AC97 audio device. It is considered malware by some because it surreptitiously monitor one's actions or gather data about customers, although it is not considered sinister. Hewlett Packard states that you should leave the startup item alone to “avoid sound issuesâ€

Hi Simon ;)

I've done everything you suggested in your last message but my computer still doesn't feel right. When trying to close some applications/programs they do not close straight away and I have to keep using the "Task Manager" tool to close them down as they usually read "Not responding".

At the same time, I keep getting that message from Windows Update. When I turn my computer on (and only if I'm connected to the Internet) I get this exact message: "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates" and the message points to the yellow windows update symbol at the bottom right corner of the screen. When I click on the symbol to start downloading the updates it asks me "how do you want to install these updates? so I click on "Express Install (Recommended)" and then on "Install".

After I do that I can see the following on the screen: "the updates are being installed. Installing Office XP Service Pack 3 (Update 1 of 1)" and the box shows the progress bar for the download. But when the download starts I get a box that says: "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Publisher 2002' disk and click OK". At that point I click on 'Cancel' because I do not trust whatever is going on. This happens every single time I turn my laptop on and it's always the same message about XP Service Pack 3. Every time I just ignore it but the windows update symbol stays on my screen's tray at the bottom right side of the screen and it keeps saying "Updates are ready for your computer. Click here to install these updates" and it doesn't go away.

In addition, when I want to restart my computer instead of shutting it down completely, it always goes to the "Install updates and shut down" option. Since I know that I can't download the update I try to choose "restart" but the computer goes back to the "Install updates and shut down" option and doesn't let me restart. It is only after the second try that the computer allows me to restart. If I click 'ok' when the computer offers me to "Install updates and shut down" the computer takes a very long time to finally shut down because I think it is trying to download the infamous update but it can't.

Anyway, I think that's all for now. I forgot to mention that I still don't get pop-ups from AVSystemcare. Now I only get one pop-up when I open Mozilla Firefox (a Dell computers advert). Other than that not other pop-ups thanks to you.

Thank you again for all your help Simon.
You are a star :)

    Hi :)

  • Let’s try to fix the problem you’re having with Windows Update first. Try the next things, in the order I’ve posted them:
    • Download Office XP Service Pack 3 from here. If your Office installation is in another language than English, please change it before downloading. The link to the file you have to download is at the bottom of the page, please download and install this file: OfficeXpSp3-kb832671-fullfile-enu.exe (enu will be changed if you change your language).
    • If you have your Office installation disk, please put it into your CD drive when you get the message to insert the 'Microsoft Publisher 2002' disk (the installation of the update requires some file from the CD, that’s why you’re getting the message).
    • If that still doesn’t work, and you have your Office installation disk, try uninstalling Office and reinstalling it. Then go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ and install all updates available for your Office installation.
  • Please post back to me and tell me how it went.
