slow, freezing computer

Unread postby jec2120 » August 24th, 2007, 11:32 am

Hello,

For a few months now my computer has been a lot slower than usual. It sometimes restarts by itself for no apparent reason. I ran Spybot, but when I ran both Ad-Aware and a-squared free, my computer froze in the middle of both scans. I have tried it many times and it never completes the scan. I also have Norton Internet Security. Please help! Thanks for any help you can give me.

Party Poker is a known Adware purveyor. Most Poker sites have this issue. However, Poker Stars so far appears to be free of adware, if you wish to look at it.
Ewido is an old application that's not needed right now. We can install the newer one later if desired.
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Party Poker
ewido

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.

  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.

Thanks for the advice. I disabled Spyguard and updated Java. I uninstalled ewido. A few days ago before I posted on this forum, I tried to remove partypoker from the add/remove programs. It told me I couldn't because I was not a system administrator, however, I only have one account on this computer. When I tried to remove partypoker just now I see that it is not in the list of add/remove programs. Maybe it was successfully removed it before; I'm not sure. I wanted to check that it is okay to go on with your instructions before I continue. Thanks.

jec2120,

Make Sure all other programs are closed, and click Fix Checked.
Then Reboot, run another HiJackThis scan and post a new log.

jec2120,
Good so far. Let's see if anything is hidden from our view.
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight Beta from here:
https://europe.f-secure.com/exclude/blacklight/fsbl.exe
Download fsbl.exe and save it to C:\
Go to Start, Run, copy in the following text and press Enter:
C:\fsbl.exe /expert
(space between fsbl.exe and /expert)

Accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked.
Click > scan, Then > next
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose Rename if something was found!
There will also be a log in C:\ with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stands for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply, along with the contents of KAV.TXT

I ran the Kaspersky Scanner three times, and each time it got up to 99% and froze there. I left it for 10 hours incase it just needed more time, but it was definitely frozen each time. It did say that there were 5 viruses and 9 infected files, however, I don't have a log. Is there another scanner I can use? I didn't go on to the next step incase I should do something else now instead. Thanks for the advice!

jec2120,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run AVG Anti-Spyware:

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
Please set up the program as follows:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Do not automatically generate reports.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
Close all open windows.
  • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.

Please post the report contents in your post.

jec2120,
If you are able to do so, please run the Blacklight scan from my previous instruction. It's relatively fast. Please post its log also.

That last scan looked pretty good.

jec2120,
Good job.
Your PC looks free of malware and major security risks. How is it running?
Just a little cleanup.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, highlight the folder if found, and press Delete.

C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\

In the case of a folder removal, you may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous Restore points, including those likely to be infected, and a new Restore Point will be established..
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You can go into Start, All Programs, locate SpywareGuard and start it up.

If you are able to do these things and things are running well, you should be good to go.

I would keep the AVG Anti-Spyware program, and either pay for it, or update it manually and run a scan every week.
We are here for any questions.

My computer seems to be running well. However, I ran the Kaspersky scanner this morning, and again, it froze at 99%. But it did find 5 viruses and 8 infected files. Should I be worried about this?

jec2120,
I don't believe there is any problem with that.

The freezing is likely a result of the other protective programs, probably your AntiVirus.

If you ran the Kaspersky before doing the System Restore sequence, Kaspersky would show all the infected files backed up by Windows.
The Restore Sequence would then have erased them.

Kaspersky would also show all the infected files in the AVG quarantine folder. Those are indeed infected files, but harmless in that location.
You can use the AVG Anti-Spyware program to delete those items from quarantine if you wish.
