My HJT log - problem with winantispyware now something new

Unread postby mindthegap » August 22nd, 2007, 6:47 pm

Problem started this past Monday when this antispyware kept coming up asking to run a system scan. Sometimes popup windows would come up, but nothing would load.

I ran Spybot, CCleaner, Ad-Aware, and AVG too many times to count. The antispyware window has subsided, but now occasionally I may get popup windows and there are at least two files in particular that aren't sitting right: opnnnom.dll and cbxewm.dll, but they won't go away.

Restarting is difficult because at least half the time the computer comes up with a black screen.

Here's the HJT log:

Hello mindthegap .......welcome to Malware Removal! I will help you try to clean your system...

First things first....I notice that you have no resident antivirus (AV) program installed and operational on your system...in today's internet environment this is computer suicide! If you have an AV program you wish to use, please install it, update it and do a scan letting it fix what it finds. Your Java program is also very out of date, and we will update it in a minute as this is a security risk, especially for Vundo infections.

If you have no AV program, there are free alternatives that you can find at these links: Avast Home Edition or Anti-Vir,

Next, I need you to do this:

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encounters a file it can not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run again on reboot,

If this occurs, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

2. Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

3. Post back with the VundoFix.txt file contents, the HJT uninstall list and a new HJT log for me to review....

I attempted to get the AntiVir. The corresponding popups about the opnnnom.dll confirm my suspicions at least; although, they may have irritated my situation.

I ran the VundoFix, again it found the same opnnnom.dll. I attempted to fix it; the program said it could not, but would try again after restart (like you said). I accepted this. Despite the black screen coming back, the VundoFix did run again, but the same thing occured: unable to fix the .dll, but it would try again on restart.

mindthegap wrote:I attempted to get the AntiVir.

Did you let Vundofix keep going or did you stop it after the second run? I see that it ran twice on 8/22 and then twice again on 8/24? The Vundofix log looks like it stopped mid-fix, or else I did not get the complete log?

I'd like to see another HJT log after we rename HJT.exe:

Using Windows Explorer (not IE), navigate to this file: C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe , then right-click it to select it, and choose rename. Rename the file scanner.exe. (You can access Windows Explorer by right-cliking the start buttion and selecting explore.)

After doing this file renaming, get another HJT log and post it for me to look at, along with another VundoFix.txt log (Run VundoFix again as I instructed previously and let VundoFix run/restart and realize it might take multiple passes to remove the file). Please let Vundo finish its thing, sometimes it can take multiple passes...

I renamed the hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe and re-ran VundoFix. The errors before may have been due to the black screen I would get after restarting the computer. When the black screen comes up, there's nothing I can do but try and restart again.

OK...thanks for re-doing the VundoFix, looks like it isn't going to do the job..we may need to try and remove it manually, but let's try this first:

1. Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Great! That looks much better.....

I do notice that you have multiple P2P/file sharing programs installed on your system...while these programs themselves may be malware-free, a significant percentage of the downloaded and shared files contain malware..in fact it is probably the major source of malware infections we see. I would recommend that you remove both LimeWire and BitTorrent, but of course the choice is up to you.

If you choose to remove them, you can do so via Add ro Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

1. I see you have AVG Anti-Spyware installed; please make sure it is updated and configured as follows:

Launch AVG Anti-Spyware and update with the latest updates, then

  • select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = about:blank
O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - C:\DOCUME~1\Naphtali\MYDOCU~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdsg.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: PCTools Browser Monitor - {B56A7D7D-6927-48C8-A975-17DF180C71AC} - C:\DOCUME~1\Naphtali\MYDOCU~1\SPYWAR~1\tools\iesdpb.dll (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

4. Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

5. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

6. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

7. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.

GREAT! Your HJT log is clean, and everything the scans found was either in system restore (we'll fix that in a moment) or quarantined.

As we finish up, please feel free to remove any tools we used to clean your system such as ComboFix and VundoFix. AVG is a 30 day free trial, you can remove it if you desire.

I do notice that you are not running a software firewall on your system, and this is highly recommended. Here are some free firewalls if you choose to install and use one:

Comodo Free Firewall

Agnitum Outpost Free Firewall

I'm glad your system is running well with out problems!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • THIS IS IMPORTANT! - If you are using Windows XP then you should reset system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point and that you have a clean restore point should you need one!

Now let's reset your restore points.

Click Start Menu >> All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> SystemRestore

Press OK. Choose 'Create a Restore Point' then Next. Name it and press 'Create' then when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click 'Close'.

Next go to Start Menu >> Run, then type:

    cleanmgr

click OK, when Disk Cleanup opens go to the 'More Options' tab and press 'Cleanup' on the system restore area which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created. To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy- Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd for Zoned Out - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface. The main screen allows the user to either clean all temporary files, or select files for cleaning. The program also knows if Firefox and or Opera is being used, and gives the option of cleaning the temporary files associated with those applications.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein. These are excellent reads too: I'm not pulling your leg and Malware: Preventing the Infection
