Inetget2? WinAntivirus Pro?

Unread postby Pike » August 24th, 2007, 12:28 pm

I must have tripped over a tube someplace in the internets, and found myself with one of the nastier forms of malware. I think I clicked on something very shiny!

Anyway, I have ran scans in both Ad-aware and AVG Anti Spyware and removed everything found, only to have the same two symptoms keep popping up.

First symptom is a second window of IE opening up when I change web pages, and the other is a gray pop up box warning me of the dire need to click here to install WinAntivirus Pro.

I read through a few similar post, but thought it best to post my own log. Thanks for all you do here, it is an asset to the internet!

Hi Pike,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Then download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • A log file will be created at C:\vundofix.txt, please post the contents of this in your next response.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the SDFix report, the Vundofix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

VundoFix Log
Ran this program twice, to verify removal, and it found more (new) files on the second scan, so I assume that the main root cause is still there.

Hijack this Log (post instructions) LogMeIn is a remote access client, and is suppose to be there. AVG picks this up as a low risk threat. Changed all passwords from another machine as instructed. This is a work station, so no personal data is stored locally. (allthough reloading all the software on it would take two days). Thankyou for your help on this matter. Please let me know how to procede.

Hi Pike,

It looks like you used a different Vundo removal tool, did you have problems downloading it?
Please use the VundoFix tool and instructions as posted and if you have any difficulties please let me know.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop from here:
http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=4

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Copy/paste the following quote box into a new Notepad (not wordpad) document. Before starting select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
sc stop cmdService
sc delete cmdService
sc stop Network Monitor
sc delete Network Monitor

Go to the menu at the top of the Notepad File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "fix.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)
Locate fix.bat on your Desktop and double-click it - a black box should appear and disappear - this is normal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis - you can download it from here:
http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HJTInstall.exe

Once you have downloaded the new version, remove the old version via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs and then use Windows Explorer to delete the program file:
C:\Hijackthis\HiJackThis_v2.exe

Then run the new version's installer HJTInstall.exe and follow the prompts.
After installing, HijackThis will open automatically

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the VundoFix report and a new HijackThis log.

The VundoFix program scans, cleans, reboots, scans again and comes out clean, then the same Winantivirus Pro secondary window stuff comes right back after I open internet explorer the first time after running a scan (to post these results) so I am not sure if the Logs are going to show the correct info.

Updated the Hijack this and vundo fix tools.

Here are the logs.

Hi Pike,

The infection is certainly is being stubborn, and it's now hiding from HijackThis so we need to rename the HijackThis program to see the entries:

Please use Windows Explorer to navigate to the HijackThis folder:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Rename the HijackThis program HijackThis.exe to scan.exe.

If you have a Desktop shortcut it will no longer work so please delete it and make a new one by right-clicking scan.exe and choosing Send To->Desktop (create shortcut)

Next, press Start->Run, type services.msc into the box and press OK
Find in the list the service named Network Monitor and double-click it.
Change the Startup type dropdown to Disabled, press Apply then press the Stop button.
Then press OK and close the Services console.

Now open HijackThis and press Open the Misc Tools section button and then the Delete an NT service button.
Type Network Monitor into the white box, press OK and Yes/OK to any prompts and allow your computer to be rebooted.

Once complete, please make and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Pike,

Yes, we're getting there :)

Please download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.

Once complete, please post the ComboFix report along with a new HijackThis log.

Ran Combo Fix, and it seems to have taken care of whatever the root cause has been. Been pop up free for the last day.

I am sorry, but I can't find the report for ComboFix, but here is the latest Hijack this scan.
