i picked up this virus with this file name. mcafee finds four of them in system32/dllcache and system32/drivers, 2 each. even when quarentined, i have no internet access or access to my lan. if i restore to a previous point, i get a window that says that there are windows files that are unrecognizable. if i leave this window up, i have full access to the internet dsl. if i cancel or close, no access. i cannot find any removal or repair files for thisw. following is the hjt file.

Hello and welcome,

tcpip.sys is a legit file, it provides you the tcp/ip protocol that allows you to access Internet and your LAN. Now, some nasty code got appended to the file and that is why it is flagged by your AV. Good copies have been replaced by it. Normally this file isn't alone on your system, lately a couple of rootkits play this little game. So before replacing the infected tcpip.sys, we need to find out if anything else is present on the PC.

You will have to prevent your AV from deleting the file, otherwise you won't have internet access.

Download Gmer to your Desktop and unzip it to your Desktop.

Disconnect from internet and close running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
Double click gmer.exe.
Let the gmer.sys driver load if asked.
If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...say NO.
You will see plenty of options checked at the right side, uncheck registry and click Scan.
Wait for scan to finish.

Once done click the Save log button.
Click on desktop in the save dialog and call the file gmer.txt

Don't delete anything with Gmer yourself or you could break your PC !

Next, Please do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
      • Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save Report As button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • File Type: Text file (*.txt).
    • Name: Kav.txt for example
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

You'll need 2 posts to fit in the logs. One reply for the gmer log and another one for the Kav log.

re; help with tcpip.sys

hi, just got back from vacation and got your reply. mcafee finds 4 viruses with the w/32nuwar.sys, and quarantines them. i still have the problem as described. i have just done a system restore to a point before all this happened and i have internet access for the moment. otherwise i use my laptop with the lan, which works just fine. i will try your assistance tomorrow, but if i disable system restore and then reboot, run mcafee and super antispyware to remove this virus, will it work. thanks, jack

Hello,

System Restore isn't able to "fix" everything, Some files might be left behind in folders not covered by it, and there is a small possiblity it will be reactivating the stuff. I doubt that SAS & McAfee are able to remove this if still partially present, depends what did drop the tcpip.sys.
Please follow my instructions, playing with System Restore like you did may make things worse instead of fixing them.
