Hi clueless,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

First download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Then download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Once complete, please post the SDFix report, the SmitfraudFix report, and a new HijackThis log.

Hi clueless,

We're making good progress, let's continue:

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file (if present):
C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe
If this file isn't present don't worry but if you have trouble deleting it, let me know in your next response.

Next, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your Desktop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the new SmitfraudFix report, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Hi clueless,

First, please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest version installed (Java(TM) 6 Update 2).

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, find and remove these entries:
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

You have the Megaupload Toolbar installed, this software tracks the websites you visit and provides the information to advertisers. I recommend you remove it, to do so, find and remove these entries:
Megaupload Toolbar
Mega Manager

Next:
Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file (if present):
C:\Windows\xpupdate.exe

If this file is not present then that's OK but if you have trouble deleting it, please let me know in your next response.

Then, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log along with a new HijackThis log.

if i deleted the xpupdate.exe from hijackthis already before you told me to do so form your method, would it be considered cleared? if not, i did a search but it does not show up so i assume it is cleared?

also, after kaspersky was finished scanning .. there was no save text it just said complete and the only button that was clickable was stop scan and that just quit the scan and i am currently having it re-scan now -__-"

Hi clueless,

Sorry my mistake, you've already deleted xpupdate.exe so no need to worry about it any further.

Yes please try Kaspersky again and let me know how you get on :)

Hi clueless,

I'm sorry to hear it took so long!

OK let's get the Kaspersky log posted - it's located on your Desktop as an HTML file:
Open the file in Internet Explorer by selecting File->Open then browse to your Desktop and select kasper.html
You should now have the Kaspersky report open in your browser
Next, select File->Save As, change Save as type to Text File, then save the file to your Desktop.
Now you should have the Kaspersky report as a text file on your Desktop, open in with Notepad, make sure Format->Word Wrap is UNchecked then copy/paste the contents into your next response.

Also, please re-post your HijackThis log and make sure Format->Word Wrap is UNchecked so it is more readable.

Hi clueless,

That all looks pretty good :)

It looks like you removed Viewpoint and/or MegaUpload. If so we can now remove their registry entries using HijackThis however we first need to disable Tea Timer:

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll (file missing) <--- if you removed Viewpoint then check this line
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [megauploadtoolbar] C:\DOCUME~1\Daniel\LOCALS~1\Temp\tbuninstall.exe -df "C:\Program Files\MegauploadToolbar\"<--- if you removed MegaUpload then check this line

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, please delete SDFix.exe and SmitfraudFix.exe from your Desktop.
Please delete this file:
C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\Application Data\installer_en[1].exe

Also, delete these folders (if present):
C:\SDFix
C:\SmitfraudFix
C:\Documents and Settings\Daniel\My Documents\SmitfraudFix

Once complete, please post another HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.

seems to be running great, if even better than before all this trouble.

no more pop-ups
no more changes in my homepage and desktop
no more lags on web loads

it's very nice to have it like this again.

can't thank you enough sir :D

Hi clueless,

Great to hear things are running better and I think your machine is clean :D

Some important final steps:

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins orActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.
