Hi Shafto,

This computer appears to have some web images set to appear on the Desktop - can you tell me if this is intentional?

Please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Blacklight log, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Shafto,

No problems we'll get rid of the Desktop images in due course.

There's quite a bit in this post so please take time to follow the instructions carefully. If you have any problems, please stop and let me know.
  • Download BFU.zip from here
  • Right click on BFU.zip and click Extract all
  • Press Next, change the target folder to C:\BFU, press Next, uncheck Show extracted files and Finish
  • Right click here and choose Save Link as to download EGDACCESS.bfu by Metallica
  • Save it into C:\BFU as EGDACCESS.bfu
Copy/paste the following quote box into a new Notepad (not wordpad) document. Make sure that Format->Wordwrap is unchecked.
@echo off
If exist temp.reg del /q temp.reg
echo REGEDIT4 > temp.reg
echo.>> temp.reg
echo [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\vsysjtvqn] >> temp.reg
echo.>> temp.reg
echo [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run] >> temp.reg
echo "vsysjtvqn"=- >> temp.reg
echo.>> temp.reg
regedit /s temp.reg
attrib -r -s -h %windir%\prefetch\vsysjtvqn.*
attrib -r -s -h %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_navps.*
attrib -r -s -h %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_nav.*
attrib -r -s -h %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn.*
attrib -r -s -h %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_m2s.*
attrib -r -s -h %WINDIR%\vsysjtvqn.exe-*.pf
del /q %windir%\prefetch\vsysjtvqn.*
del /q %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_navps.*
del /q %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_nav.*
del /q %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn.*
del /q %windir%\system32\vsysjtvqn_m2s.*
del /q %WINDIR%\vsysjtvqn.exe-*.pf
del /q temp.reg

Save it to your Desktop as "naviclean.bat" (you MUST include the quotes)

It may be a good idea to print the rest of these instructions off as you will be rebooting your computer and will not have internet access while in safe mode

Make sure the Blacklight program is on your Desktop
  • Press Start->Run, copy this command into the box and press OK:
    Code: Select all
    "%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert
  • This will launch BlackLight
  • Select I accept the agreement
  • Click Next>
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Click on Next>
  • Now click on the first item listed and click Rename
  • Repeat for the rest of the items listed
  • Click Next>
  • Tick the box next to I understand the warning
  • Click OK
  • Click Restart now
  • Click OK

Your computer will then restart

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Once in Safe Mode:

Locate naviclean.bat on your Desktop and double-click it. A DOS window will open briefly and then close, this is normal

  • Go to C:\BFU and double click BFU.exe to start the Brute Force Uninstaller (BFU) by Merijn
  • Click on the folder icon Image
  • Find and select EGDACCESS.bfu
  • Click Open
  • Click Execute
  • Wait for the script to finish executing
  • You will get the message Completed script execution.
  • Click OK
  • Close BFU

Now, restart your computer normally

Make sure Blacklight is on your Desktop
Press Start->Run, copy this command into the box and press OK:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

  • Choose I accept the agreement, then Next and Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any this time
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete, please post the last Blacklight log along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Shafto,

The new Blacklight log looks good so everything worked fine :)

Still a few things to do however:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here

You have a program called G23942EN in your Add/Remove programs list about which I can't find any information. Do you know anything about it?

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
You can remove Viewpoint Media Player via Add/Remove Programs.

You have BitComet, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove BitComet via Add/Remove Programs.

Open AVG Antispyware and make sure the Status screen is selected
Next to Resident Shield press Change state so that the status reads inactive
Close AVG Antispyware

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: PCTools Site Guard - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZRxdm103YYGB
O24 - Desktop Component 0: (no name) - http://www.urlbaron.com/cardpics/p6648_small.gif
O24 - Desktop Component 1: (no name) - http://www.urlbaron.com/cardpics/p6384_small.jpg
O24 - Desktop Component 2: (no name) - http://www.metoyou.co.uk/plugins/wallpa ... -image.php? I cut this one off for formatting reasons
O24 - Desktop Component 3: (no name) - http://www.pontins.com/images/character ... n_croc.gif

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.
