I clicked "Yes" instead of "No" when Spybot valiantly tried to stop me from hosing my system.

Now, yabab, opnkhec, and efefg keep showing up in my registry, and have resisted all attempts at removal. AVG, HouseCall.TrendMicro, Spybot, AdAware, and even a 70-dollar Norton360 package cannot seem to rid me of this cancer.

Here is my HiJackThis log. Can someone please help me cleanse the taint?

Hi Mordaris,

You have Logitech Desktop Messenger installed on your system. This is a background process which can access the internet without your knowledge or consent. Although it can assist in providing software updates for your Logitech hardware, it uses resources on your machine and the fact that it accesses the internet without your approval is potentially dangerous. I recommend you remove this program, to do so, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Logitech Desktop Messenger and select Remove

We need to temporarily disable Tea Timer as it may interfere with some changes we need to make:

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3964D8D6-86D0-493A-B460-A805B5401114} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C608D079-5001-48EA-813C-538FA2CE7B4C} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: CPub Object - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\dnsersnd.dll (file missing)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\ldcore.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: efefg - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: opnkhec - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winduj32 - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: yabab - C:\WINDOWS\

If you removed Logitech Desktop Messenger, then you should also check this line (if present):
O4 - Global Startup: Logitech Desktop Messenger.lnk = C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\8876480\Program\LDMConf.exe

Do you know if you have placed restrictions on changes to Internet Explorer settings? These may have been put in place by protection software like Spybot S&D. If you think there is no reason for these restrictions or wish to remove them then also place a checkmark next to these lines:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next, download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.

Once complete, please post the ComboFix report along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mordaris,

We're making good progress, let's continue:
  • Check that combofix.exe is on your Desktop
  • Then open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad and click OK
  • Copy/paste the contents of the below code box into Notepad:
    Code: Select all
    File::
    C:\windows\system32\ldcore.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\dls0523pmw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\babay.ini2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\babay.bak2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\babay.bak1
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\win46.tmp.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvfaf.dll

    Driver::
    ZHYZHCUBT

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\avp]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\CTDrive]
    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Tbrt]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
    "http"=dword:00000003
    "https"=dword:00000003
    "ftp"=dword:00000003
    "file"=dword:00000003
    "@ivt"=dword:00000001

  • Save this to your Desktop as CFScript.

    Image
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the new ComboFix log, the SmitfraudFix log, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

I'm somewhat embarassed...

Unread postby Mordaris » August 13th, 2007, 5:23 am

How I could let my machine get infected to this extent is disgraceful.

A couple of things:
1) I forgot to turn off SpyBot's memory-resident components before running ComboFix
2) When my machine rebooted, an "Out of system resources" error box popped up
3) During its final stages, ComboFix returned the message "Unable to find the path specified".

Here is the ComboFix log:

Hi Mordaris,

How I could let my machine get infected to this extent is disgraceful.

Don't feel too bad, the bad guys are very smart and they are working very hard to make sure it's as easy as possible to be infected.

I forgot to turn off SpyBot's memory-resident components before running ComboFix...

Tea Timer should remain turned off the whole time we are cleaning otherwise it will get in the way as you've seen. Please turn it off again before continuing.

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, look down the list for these items and remove them:
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

These are out of date and now a serious security risk, you can get the latest update (version 6 update 2) from here although it appears you already have this installed.

Next, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C608D079-5001-48EA-813C-538FA2CE7B4C} - (no file)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: efefg - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: opnkhec - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: winduj32 - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: yabab - C:\WINDOWS\

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Mordaris,

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3964D8D6-86D0-493A-B460-A805B5401114} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE53} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Clean Spybots quarantined files:
Open Spybot - Search & Destroy
Select Recovery from the menu on the left side
Select the relevant item(s) and choose Purge selected items
Close Spybot - Search & Destroy

Please delete this infected file:
D:\World of Warcraft\Cosmos.exe.prepatch

This file:
D:\Backup\FlashDrive Backup\framework-3.0.exe

contains remote access tools - do you know what this program is?

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running.

New log

Unread postby Mordaris » August 15th, 2007, 4:54 am

That file is part of Metasploit. I am doing some cross-training at my workplace. My mentor was teaching me the mechanics of how buffer overflow and cross-scripting exploits function, and how to close the security holes. That file was on my flash drive the last time I backed it up.

However, since it was listed as infected, and since I do not need the tool at home, I deleted it.

The system seems to be running much better. You are a lifesaver! I would have hated to have to flatten and rebuild this box. After this, I am giving serious consideration to putting Deep Freeze on it.

Hi Mordaris,

Great to hear things are running better, and I think your machine is now clean :)

Some important final steps:

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

You should now delete ComboFix.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe and the SmitfraudFix folder from your Desktop.

Also delete these folders:
C:\QooBox
C:\SmitfraudFix

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Some tips to help you keep your machine clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

I wanted to thank you most graciously for all of your invaluable help. Without your intervention, I would have surely had to reformat my machine, which would have been a horrible pain in the backside.

Once again, thank you so very much!
