Hi Hank

Good work on posting log.

This is next:

Start WinPFind3U.
Copy/Paste the information that is inside of the quotebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.
NOTE*(make sure to just highlight and copy what is inside of the quote box nothing outside of it)

[Registry - Non-Microsoft Only]
< Run [HKLM] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
YN -> ccApp -> %CommonProgramFiles%\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe
YN -> Symantec NetDriver Monitor -> %SystemDrive%\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe
YN -> Zone Labs Client -> %ProgramFiles%\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe
< SharedTaskScheduler [HKLM] > -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler
YN -> {af8bca8b-a9f1-471d-bdcd-caa14be2bdd9} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [hemprich]
< Internet Explorer ToolBars [HKCU] > -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\
YN -> ShellBrowser\\{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [Reg Data - Key not found]
YN -> WebBrowser\\{42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} [HKLM] -> Reg Data - Key not found [Reg Data - Key not found]
[Files/Folders - Modified Within 60 days]
NY -> ktrxe.dll -> %System32%\ktrxe.dll
NY -> ZoneLabs -> %System32%\ZoneLabs
[File String Scan - Non-Microsoft Only]
NY -> UPX! , UPX0 , -> %System32%\ktrxe.dll

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished.
Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix. Post that information back here.
NOTE* If for some reason Notepad does not open with log of actions taken. The log will be in the Winpfind3u folder and will have a name like this:
( mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log)

Just copy and paste that log in your next reply.

Restart computer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will need to check log from this tool next:

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) make sure to click the Save button not Run button and save to your Desktop.

http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a 'RiskTool'; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between 'good' and 'malicious' use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please post in next reply:
Winpfind3u log (Log will be in Winpfind3u folder and will have a name like this: ( mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log))

Hi Hank,

We have a little more to do here.

This is next:
Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

Hi Tim,

Had to restart a couple times to get things going right. But finished the smitfraudfix.exe

The Opera option in the ATF Cleaner was greyed out so I couldnt select anything in that category.

The Desktop was reset to plain blue, not sure if that is in the ordinary. Thanks Tim, talk to ya soon.

Hi Hank,

The Desktop was reset to plain blue, not sure if that is in the ordinary.

Yes it can when using SmitfraudFix.

Great job. Let me know how your computer is running now.

These tools I had you download are of no longer any use as they update so frequently that fresh copies have to be downloaded when needed.

Delete tools:
WinPFind3U Folder
SmitFraudFix.exe and SmitFraudFix Folder
Vundo.exe and C:\vundofix.txt
combofix.exe and C:\QooBox

--------------------------------------------------------

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - You are using Windows XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
    You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:

    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
    Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  7. Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
    This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
    Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. WinPatrol - WinPatrol uses a heuristic approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others download new reference files.
    • Detect & Neutralize Spyware.
    • Detect & Neutralize ADware.
    • Detect & Neutralize Viral infections.
    • Detect & Neutralize Unwanted IE Add-Ons.
    • Detect & Restore File Type Changes.
    • Automatically Filter Unwanted Cookies.
    • Avoid Start Page Hijacking.
    • Detect changes to HOSTS & critical system files.
    • Kill Multiple Tasks that replicate each other, in a single step!
    • Stop programs that repeatedly add themselves to your Startup List!
    Starting with WinPatrol 9.5 PLUS users also get the addition of Real-time Infiltration Detection so they'll know immediately when changes are made to critical system areas. WinPatrol Free is not demo or trial software. You're welcome to use it as long as you like.
    You can download WinPatrol here
    WinPatrol FAQ
  11. Hosts File - A Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad, spyware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
    A tutorial tutorial can be found here
    • MVPS Hosts File
      You can download the MVPS Hosts Filehere
      Furthermore the website contains useful tips and links to other resources and utilities.
    • Bluetack's Hosts File and Hosts Manager
      Essentially based on the research made by Webhelper, Andrew Clover and Eric L. Howes, it contains most if not all the known spyware sites, sites responsible for hijacks, rogue apllications etc...
      Download Bluetack's Hosts file here
      Download Bluetack's HostsManager here
  12. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which is ........... please post as a reply, you will need to register to do so. It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.

Hi Tim,

Not sure if I should pester you with this question, since it does seem that the virus is gone and this is more of a maintenance question.

I cant seem to download any of the Windows updates. I keep getting a failed to install notice. Also I noticed that I cannot start the Windows Firewall, as it says it cannot start the Internet Connection Sharing service.

I am running Windows XP Professional, but it was an aftermarket upgrade from Home Edition. Any coincidence?

thanks,
Craig

Hi Hank

Have you not been able to get windows updates in the past before infection? I'm not seeing any in your uninstall list that was posted in previous reply post?

Hi Tim,

Yes I did previously have a problem with installing windows updates. I took a shot that I could now.

As for Trend Micro, I have the trial, so I will be going to AVG most likely, but the Kaspersky looks good too. Thanks,

Craig

When you upgraded did you buy an upgrade cd with a valid product key?

The CD itself does not seem to be with the packaging however. Unfortunate...

I'm sorry Hank it doesn't look like I can be of much help with this issue. Thus leaving my area of expertise I am train in malware removal. I will recommend a few other forums that may be more suited for this sort of problem. You need to be able to get windowsupdates to be secure from infection.

Give a link to this thread for reference to helper that helps you.
