Browser Hijacked

Unread postby Paul » August 6th, 2007, 7:00 pm

Please help. My browser (IE 6) is hijacked almost every time I click on a link. Often, I end up at Open DNS (a pseudo search site?), but not always.

I have Lavasoft Adware Plus and Defender Pro AntiSpy supposedly providing real-time protection and SpyBot runs every night. The first two never find anything, but lately the SpyBot keeps finding Zlob.DNSchanger. It says it fixes it, but the browser keeps acting up and each time I reboot SpyBot catches the Zlob again.

Thank you so much for your time and effort!
Paul

Hi Paul,

Your log shows two copies of HijackThis installed:
C:\_Dev\_Software\HiJackThis.exe
C:\_Dev\_Software\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe

Please remove one copy before continuing.

Download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press Enter
This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other options until you are asked to do so!

If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C: ), and launch from there.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user. Further info is available here.

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the SmitfraudFix log, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Everything went without a hitch, exept I could not find the duplicate copy of HiJackThis. Maybe the false log entry is because I had move it just be for running the program.

Here are the logs you requested. Thank you so much for helping. :)

Hi Paul,

I'm glad to hear that went well :)

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8
A menu should appear, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press enter

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Download ComboFix to your desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • Note: Do not click ComboFix's window while it's running - it may cause it to stall!
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you, please post it in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Smitfraudfix log, the ComboFix log and a new HijackThis log.
The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Hi Paul,

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(They should have this icon next to it: Image)
Remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following files (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\poolsv.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\indwvm.dll

If one or both of these files aren't present that's OK, but if you have trouble deleting either, please let me know in your next response.

Have you purposefully set your system to use OpenDNS as it's DNS server? These next instructions will set your DNS server back to your ISP's, so if you want to keep using OpenDNS then skip down to the Dr Web scan and continue from there.

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because it is possible you may temporarily lose internet access.

Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
Select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically and then click OK twice

Now reboot and check that your internet access works normally.
If you now cannot access the internet, please follow these steps in Olive:
Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
Select the radio button that says Use the following DNS server addresses:
Then enter the following IP addresses into the Preferred and Alternate IP address boxes: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Then click OK twice

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Once complete, please post the Dr Web log along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

Sorry this is taking so much of your time. Here is the recap:
No problem Unhiding files

Could not find Poolsv.exe (I did find 2 copies of SPoolsv.exe but did nothing with them)

Did not find indwvm.dll

Did not want OpenDNS (that was the problem that led me to you folks) so I changed DNS servers to automatic.

Web access fine, but browser still being redirected

Ran Dr. Web CureIt, see log below. Ran HiJackThis, see log.

Hi Paul,

OK we're nearly there :)

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{B98A1492-0CEA-4EEF-BAED-2001765979FA}: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 208.67.220.220,208.67.222.222

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Please try this again, but do it for every connection in the Network Connections list:

Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections

Do this for each connection listed:
Right click the connection name and select Properties
Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
Select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically and then click OK twice

Then reboot your computer.

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Silver,

At first, when I finished your instructions, I had a curious issue of some websites loading while others would not. But, since an old computer on the same network was having the same problem, I decided to try resetting my DSL modem and that seemed to resolve it on both machines.

Now, after using it all day today without any problems, I am very happy to say all of the symptoms have been resolved (I'll leave it to you to officially declare me clean).

Thank you so, so much for all your time and trouble. If all the other computer experts in the world were half as benevolent as you folks, there would be no such thing as malware. I just wish I could afford to donate more to help ensure the perpetuation of this site and the wonderful work its member do.

Again, thank you very much! You guys are fantastic.

One last question: I thought I was fairly well protected between the full Defender Pro suite, Lavasoft Plus and daily Spybot and TrendMicro scans. Is there anything else you would recommend I add to avoid a recurrence?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,

Thank you for your kind words :)
I'm very happy to hear things are running better and I think your machine is now clean of malware.

Some important final steps:

You should now delete ComboFix.exe, cureit.exe, SmitfraudFix.exe and the SmitfraudFix folder from your Desktop.

Also delete these folders:
C:\QooBox
C:\SmitfraudFix
C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\DoctorWeb\Quarantine

Re-enable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Check the box labeled Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide extensions for known file types option
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

One last question: I thought I was fairly well protected between the full Defender Pro suite, Lavasoft Plus and daily Spybot and TrendMicro scans. Is there anything else you would recommend I add to avoid a recurrence?

You have very good protective software installed and regular scanning is an excellent practice, however you should understand that this software may not be able to protect you from a bad download which is the most likely way your machine was infected. If your machine doesn't have the latest patches it could also have been infected by a malicious website exploiting a known security hole. In any case, after your machine is infected, the software may recognize it and alert you, but struggle to remove it (as you have found out). Prevention is the key and I have some suggestions with this in mind:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plugins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Spybot's Tea Timer is a good feature, however a more fully featured real-time antispyware program such as Windows Defender can provide more comprehensive protection. You should only have one of these programs running at a time.

Please post back to let me know you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

Hi Silver,

I read it, printed it, and posted it next to my computer. In fact, I have already completed the your final instructions and implemented your recommendations.

I must say one last time how impressed I am with your generosity in sharing both your time and your wisdom. The endeavor you and your colleagues undertake here is humbling and inspiring.

Thanks to you, I can finally say I'm Clean! :D
