Log - have problem with Win32/Gaelicum.A virus

Unread postby Charence » August 6th, 2005, 11:11 am

Hi,

I've been having problems with the virus Win32/Gaelicum.A since 19th July, it keeps infecting exe files on my computer and I was told to post a hijack this log in this forum. I've run scans many times with AVG both in normal and safe mode but the virus keep reappearing. Hopefully this log will identify the problem. Thank you!

hi there. I Don't see anything wrong with your log!

Where does it say this virus is, what location?

Here's a link to sophos on this pest.

http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32tengaa.html

the version of hijack this you have is outdated, download a newer
version from below.

Download hijack this from the link below.Please do this. Click here:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

to download HijackThis. Click scan and save a logfile, then post it here so
we can take a look at it for you. Don't click fix on anything in hijack this
as most of the files are legitimate.

Try running a few scans to se if anything shows up?

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here

http://www.ewido.net/en/

* Install ewido.
* During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido
* It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
* On the left side of the main screen click update
* Click on Start and let it update.
* DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

download ccleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com/

* Install CCleaner
* Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
* Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
* Click OK
* Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

Note: If you are not instructed to boot to safe mode to run another
application, then just run ccleaner in normal mode!

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

How to boot to safe mode

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ts ... ec_doc_nam

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

now run ccleaner

Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you
can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

post another hijack this log, the ewido and active scan logs

First, look in the system tray next to the the clock and look for the Spybot resident icon. Right click it and select turn off spybot resident.

Scan with hijackthis and check this line:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/019bb2d840d ... xIE601.cab

Then click fixed checked.

Have you downloaded Ewido like in Khazars post? Follow the instructions in his post and post the scan log in your next reply.

also do an online scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/ and post the log it generates in your next reply also.

Scan with hijackthis after doing the above and post a fresh log also.

I'll need you to turn off TeaTimer once again to remove those 016 lines. Open Spybot S&D in advanced mode, click Tools > Resident, and remove the check from "Resident Tea-Timer". Reboot after unchecking the entry.

Download ResetTeaTimer.bat. Double click the file to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Fix these lines with HijackThis:

*****Place items to be fixed here*****

Turn tea timer back on after getting one clear log , then get one more to double check.

Now scan with HJT and check this entry:

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -

Make sure Internet Explorer is closed and click Fix Checked.

Other than that left over entry, you are clean. Are you still having problems?

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
    You can find instructions on how to enable and re enable system restore here:
    Managing Windows Millennium System Restore
    or
    Windows XP System Restore Guide
    re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
    Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
