Everything seems to be working well....Thanks so much.
Here's the HJT log.
Also I deleted AOL from my computer about few weeks ago and I still see that there are some processes that start with the letters AOL. I would like to know if there is a way to delete these processes and any other processes that I don't need to use anymore.

Thanks again for all your help.

Hello bebops75,

Just to be sure before I have you delete this stuff, you don't use AIM messenger or ANYTHING you know of that is associated with AOL?

Yes I would like to delete all the aol stuff. I actually would like to delete anything that is causing it to slow down that I don't use.
I do have an account with AOL but all I use is email and I can do that through the aol.com page using Internet Explorer.
Also sometimes the McAfee logo on the taskbar shows dark as if it were disabled but when I go to enable it, it says that it is already enabled...and it stays dark. I'm not sure what that is about.

Thank you for your concern and help.

When turning on computer, it took me to a blue page saying that there is a problem caused by file:

kcom.sys

Page_fault_in_nonpaged_area

I just shut down and rebooted and it seems to be fine. It sometimes decides to go a bit slow but mostly it is working fine.

I wasn't sure if this error had to do with any of the changes we have done to the computer.

Thank you.

Hello bebops75,

Please copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixService1.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

sc stop AOL ACS
sc delete AOL ACS
sc stop WANMiniportService
sc delete WANMiniportService
exit

Double click FixService1.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following folder (if present): (To get into Windows Explorer, right click the START button and select "explore.")

C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL

Using Windows Explorer delete the following file (if present): (To get into Windows Explorer, right click the START button and select "explore.")

C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe

I'm not really sure about the McAFee icon issue, not real familiar with that particular anti-virus program.

Please post back with a fresh HJT log and an update on how your computer is running.

Hello, sorry for the delay in response.

Explorer is not letting me delete the aol folder.

It says -

Cannot delete ACSCmn.dll: access is denied.
Make sure disk is not full or write protected and not in use

The rest I was able to do. Computer seems to be ok.

Hello bebops75,

Please copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixService2.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

Code: Select all
sc stop "AOL ACS"
sc delete "AOL ACS"
exit

Double click FixService2.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Using Windows Explorer delete the following folder (if present): (To get into Windows Explorer, right click the START button and select "explore.")

C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Disable and Enable System Restore - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.
    Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
    Click Properties
    Click the System Restore tab
    Check Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK

    Reboot.

    Turn on System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer
    Click Properties
    Click the System Restore tab
    Uncheck Turn off System Restore
Click Apply, and then click OK
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis!
  • Re hide your system files To do so, please follow the steps below:

    • Double-click My Computer.
    • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    • Click the View tab.
    • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
    • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
    • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.

      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here are some Anti Virus products which are free for personal use and most used:
    AntiVir
    Avast
    BitDefender
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
    Comodo
    Kerio
    ZoneAlarm
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
