I have been fighting with this for a few days now. What happens is this. I am using SlimBrowser and everything is fine until I navigate to another webpage. When I do my IE browser opens up and displays 3 websites. These are not always the same but the same sites keep showing up. There is a redirect from affiliates.copeac.com using geo_tracking_redirect.html?a=21288&program_id=633 and
geo_tracking_redirect.html?a=21288&program_id=865 to get to these websites.

I have run anti virus and adware scans and nothing was detected. Here is my HiJackThis log.

I think I have solved the problem

Unread postby mauvecat » August 2nd, 2007, 3:45 am

Greetings,

I know I am not supposed to reply to my own message but it has been a day or so since I posted my request for help and since then I have been working on it with the tools supplied by this site.

I first identified the following HiJackThis log entry as a definate problem using the castlecops site.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {CF46BFB3-2ACC-441b-B82B-36B9562C7FF1} -
C:\WINNT\system32\__c001BDC9.dat

HiJackThis was not able to delete this entry so I used KillBox in Safe Mode to do that.

I verified after a reboot the both the entry and file were gone. However the problem still persisted. I had noticed a similar file while deleting the last one so I did a search on the HiJackThis log using the second file name and found this.

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINNT\system32\__c00669A1.dat

This is particularly nasty as castlecops indicate that the file names used are random. This could have been a completely legit entry except the files names and details where so similar that there was little doubt that they were related.

I used Killbox again but this time I had to use the delete on reboot option to delete file. I used HiJackThis to delete the registry entry.

The process this was running under was:

C:\WINNT\system32\DllHost.exe

This of course is a totally legitimate file and was just being used but not altered for illegitimate ends.

I got this by the way by a video codex scam by the way. I don't know enough to know if I have completely eliminated the problem yet so nobody should follow what I did until this is verified.

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi mauvecat

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi mauvecat

Run Smitfraudfix
Open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\windows\system32\blank.htm

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

Post back with the Rapport log and a new HijackThis log, please.

Hi mauvecat

Warning. Please note that this fix is specific for this poster and should not be used by anyone else:

1. Before we make changes to your registry, we need to make a back up of the key that we are going to work on:

To back up the key please do the following

  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file export.bat
  • Change the "Save as Type" to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop
Code: Select all
regedit /e C:\export-run.reg "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler"
Double-click the export.bat file
The backup file will be placed in your C:\ directory as export-run.reg .

If there is a fatal error you can simply double click on the export-run.reg you just created to restore the registry to the state it was in before you began.
Warning. Do not click it except if I tell you to do so. Double clicking it will reintroduce the maleware to your computer and can have other unexpected effects.

2. Please do this:

  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]
"{eb86b46a-d6db-4478-8f5f-06cb2ebc1b35}"=-

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

Please go HERE to run PandaActiveScan...

  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)

  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to your desktop.

Paste the report in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello mauvecat

I suggest copying to Notepad, or printing out, the following instruction, especially as you will be in Safe Mode and unable to connect to the Internet.

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*Note* If you do not have Firefox or Opera, those options will be greyed out.

Code: Select all
regedit /e C:\export-run.reg "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser\{6A85D97D-665D-4825-8341-9501AD9F56A3}"
Double-click the export.bat file
The backup file will be placed in your C:\ directory as export-run.reg .

If there is a fatal error you can simply double click on the export-run.reg you just created to restore the registry to the state it was in before you began.
Warning. Do not click it except if I tell you to do so. Double clicking it will reintroduce the maleware to your computer and can have other unexpected effects.

2. Please do this:

  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it on the desktop

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar\WebBrowser\{6A85D97D-665D-4825-8341-9501AD9F56A3}]

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4

Then double-click on the fix.reg file, and when it prompts to merge say yes.

Reboot into SAFE MODE
By pressing the F8 key right when Windows starts, usually right after you hear your computer
beep when you reboot it (some versions of windows will display 'Starting Windows' with a grey progress bar)
you will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.

If it does not work on the first try, reboot and try again, as you have to be quick when you press it.

I have found that during boot up, right after the computer displays the equipment , memory, etc
installed on your computer, if you start lightly tapping the F8 key, the system will usually display the menu.

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
  1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon (or click Start, then select My Computer)
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. After the new window appears select the View tab.
  5. Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
  6. Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
  7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
  8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
  9. Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Navigate to and delete the following files and/or folders (if they are present):

Files:
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert J Dunn\My Documents\exsplorer.lnk
C:\Documents and Settings\Robert J Dunn\My Documents\WinMoviePlugIn.lnk

Folders:
C:\Program Files\SlimBrowser\SmitfraudFix
D:\Anti Malware\SmitfraudFix

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present):

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit HijackThis.

I would advise updating Adobe Reader, as the latest version clears up any vulnerabilities of previous versions.
First uninstall the version you have on your computer then download and install Adobe Reader 8.1.

Delete the older versions of Java and download the newest.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  1. Close any programmes you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  2. Click Start > Control Panel.
  3. Click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  5. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  6. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  7. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (4th one down the list), which is JRE6u2, and click Yes at the page warning, then accept the Licence Agreement before downloading the Offline file.

Now run HijackThis again and post the new log. Let me know how your computer is running now.

Hi Scotty,

Got it all done. The blank start page entry was deleted but reappeared. I imagine this is because that setting is locked from change my me on all five of the browsers I use (I develop webpages for a living and generally do not want to waste time loading a complicated start page when I just want to check how a page looks now in a certain browser.

My Internet Explore address bar search function has stopped working. I imagine that is what the mysearch registry entry was about that we deleted.

Otherwise my computer is working fine still and I am more confident that no nasty stuff is on it.

Hi mauvecat

Look in the Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs. See if IE is listed. If it is select it and click Uninstall. At the next dialog box, select Repair and OK. It will check your IE files and then you need to reboot.

A firewall helps keep attackers at bay and keeps malicious processes from 'calling home'. It is important you install one now.
Check this out for a list of free firewalls. Zone Alarm is considered the easiest to use.

Let me know how the Internet explorer fix works out for you.

Hi

This is my usual speech for when you are clean, which you appear to be.
Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable
and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    3. Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

And take a look at this LINKY for further recommendations and tips to stay clean.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
