Hi mex12321,

There is a very dangerous infection showing in your log. It looks like it may have already been taken care of by your antivirus program but you should be aware of the implications, this is my standard warning for victims of this type of malware:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(They should have this icon next to it: Image)
Remove all versions of Java.
You can download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) (version 6 update 2), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

You have Shareaza, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove Shareaza via Add/Remove Programs.

Your log showed two copies of HijackThis running at the same time. You should use the latest version 2.0.2 (the one you used to post your log) and delete the other installation.

Now, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {36DBC179-A19F-48F2-B16A-6A3E19B42A87} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6monl.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following file (if present):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipv6monl.dll

If this file isn't present don't worry about it; but if it is present and you can't delete it, let me know in your next response.

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi mex12321,

Sorry to hear you are having trouble! Did all the steps up to the Kaspersky scan work OK?

Try this please:

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Then, please try DSS once more, if the same problem occurs, just make a new HijackThis log instead.

Once complete, please post the SDFix report, the Dr Web report and the DSS logs (or a new HijackThis log if DSS stops again). The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Hi mex12321,

Dr Web has detected a file mps.exe associated with your McAfee Security Suite, and I think this is likely to be a false positive. I'm surprised it listed it for deletion because the settings should have been changed to 'Move'. Did you change the Dr Web settings as per the instructions?

Please use Windows Explorer to see if the file is still present and let me know in your next response:
C:\Program Files\McAfee\MPS\mps.exe

Please also post an extra.txt log from DSS as follows:

  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, click the Check All button, then uncheck Main Log, then press Scan!

Once complete, please post the DSS extra.txt and another HijackThis log. Also, let me know if the file mps.exe is present.

Hi mex12321,

I note you have not yet removed the old version of Java, this is very important as this program has security vulnerabilities which can be used to infect your machine. Please uninstall J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9 via Add/Remove Programs. You can download the latest version of Java Runtime from here

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"c:\\windows\\lsass.exe"=-
"C:\\WINDOWS\\pi.exe"=-
"C:\\Documents and Settings\\Ethan\\Local Settings\\Temporary Internet Files\\Content.IE5\\81I7OXYZ\\pi[1].exe"=-

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.

You should now delete cureit.exe, SDFix.exe and fix.reg from your Desktop. Also delete this folder:
C:\SDFix

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

It looks like a program file from your McAfee suite has been deleted by Dr Web, so part of the functionality of this program is no longer available. In order to reinstate this program, a repair or reinstall of the program may be necessary. I need a bit of information to help you to resolve this:
- The exact name of the McAfee product you have installed e.g. McAfee Internet Security Suite
- How did you obtain the software? Download, retail purchase, came with your PC?
- Do you have the installation CDs and license key(s)?

Please download and run the McAfee Virtual Technician:
http://mvt.mcafee.com/mvt/mvtapp.exe

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log, let me know how you got on with the instructions and the results from the McAfee Virtual Technician.
