Hi gamerking#1.

There's no sign of any malware in the log. There are, however, a few issues which need addressing.

------------------------------------------------

Trend Micro PC-cillin 2000

Is this still supported by Trend Micro? I couldn't find any information about this. If it's not supported, you need to uninstall it and install another anti-virus program. Two good ones are Avast and AVG. Both are free, for personal use.

-----------------------------------------------

Firewall

I cannot see any sign that you are using a firewall. Are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Outpost Firewall are both good and have a free version. I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

----------------------------------------------

ZTGServerswitch

ZTGServerswitch is part of Sony's Vaio support agent - designed by Support.com. It is not required if the user does not wish to use the Vaio support agent and is regarded as spyware. If you wish to stop this running, please do the following:

Run HijackThis and click Scan and then check (tick) the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ZTgServerSwitch] c:\program files\support.com\client\lserver\server.vbs

Close down all programs, browsers and other open windows. Make sure that only the above item is checked and then click on Fix checked.

---------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6u2.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-------------------------------------------

ViewPoint Manager

I see that Viewpoint is installed.

Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.

If you decide to reove it, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
If AOL is present, to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
  • Open AOL
  • Go to Help on the toolbar
  • Select About AOL
  • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.
Open HijackThis and 'fix' this line (see instructions above):

O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - https://components.viewpoint.com/MTSIns ... xpId=4411&

------------------------------------------

There is an 'orphan' line in the log which relates to Spybot S&D. Open HijackThis and fix this line:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\DOCUME~1\Patrik\Desktop\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll (file missing)

------------------------------------------

Please let me know if you have any questions about the above. Your thread title is "Just checking". Are there any problems with the computer? Please let me know if you have any questions about the above.

-------------------------------------

Edit: Let me know if you have trouble uninstalling PC-cillin 2000.

The messages from Outpost would reduce as it becomes 'trained'. If you definitely want to get rid of it, you need to download a replacement before uninstalling it. I suggest that you try Sunbelt Personal Firewall. To uninstall Outpost, right-click on the system tray icon and close (exit) the program. Click Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs and uninstall Outpost.

When you install Sunbelt Personal Firewall, you will be given a choice of Simple or Advanced mode. I suggest that you use the Simple mode, as this will not nag you. You can change the settings to a more advanced mode after the installation is complete, if you wish.

Have you sorted out the Anti-Virus software yet? Trend Micro PC-cillin 2000 is not supported and using this is worse than having no anti-virus software at all. Some people have had problems uninstalling it. Let me know if you need help with this.

Please could you clarify your question.

To recap:

15 July: I recommended that you uninstall Trend Micro PC-cillin 2000 and told you to let me know if you had any problem with this. I recommended two free antivirus programs to replace it. You have not replied to this or asked for help. I also suggested that you install a third-party firewall and recommended Outpost Firewall and Sunbelt Personal Firewall.

20 July: You said that you had tried Outpost and didn't like it. You asked for another recommendation. I suggested Sunbelt again. I also asked if you had sorted ot your antivirus software. You did not reply.

27 July: You post to say that uninstalling "it" didn't work and asking for a recommendation for another firewall. What is the "it" you are referring to? I assume that you are talking about Outpost. I have already recommended Sunbelt Firewall twice.

I will be happy to help you sort out the firewall and antivirus software on your computer if you follow my suggestions and reply in a more timely manner. Please let me know the current situation and clarify which program you are trying to uninstall which "doesn't show up in the add/remove programs list".

  • Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
    • Under Cookies to Delete, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently
    • Click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to Keep pane.
  • Go into Options > Advanced deselect\uncheck 'Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours'
  • Click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the 'Issues' feature unless you are very familiar with the registry.
  • In the Left Pane, click Tools
  • Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.

Good afternoon.

Outpost is on the uninstall list, but listed under Agnitum. There is a free version of Sunbelt Personal Firewall.
Sunbelt Personal Firewall 4 can run in a free mode vs. a full (paid) mode. Install it now, and for the first 30 days it will run in 'full' mode. After that, it shuts down selected features, but will continue to run in 'free' mode".

I suggest that you download SBF before you uninstall the Outpost one, but don't install it yet. Download it from here.

-----------------------------------------

To Remove Program(s)
Open CCleaner.
In the Left Pane, click Tools.
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click / Highlight Agnitum Outpost Firewall Pro
Click the Run Uninstaller button.
Wait until CCleaner shows task completion.
Repeat the Highlight > Run Uninstaller sequence for Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1. You have the newer version (Update 2) installed.

Reboot the computer.

----------------------------------------

Install Sunbelt Personal Firewall. You will get a choice of mode. I suggest that you use the simple mode. You may get a few popups but not many. I haven't set up using the simple mode, but I think you may have to 'allow' some programs. There is an ad-blocker in the trial version. This can be a bit too choosy. I suggest that you disable it. It will not function after the trail period ends anyway.

----------------------------------------

Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Well done. :)

You have got the latest version of Java but it doesn't remove earlier versions when you update. We were just getting rid of the old one.

I couldnt find "O16 - DPF: {03F998B2-0E00-11D3-A498-00104B6EB52E} (MetaStreamCtl Class) - "

Uninstalling Viewpoint probably removed this.

Please let me know whether you have any other questions. If not, I think that we can close this thread.
