Hi bordas,

Sorry to tell you this, but your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please print/save a copy of these instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

You have Ask Toolbar installed on your system. This program is not malware, but it may report on your surfing behavior and is considered undesirable, see here and here for more information. If you actually use this program, consider a safe alternative such as Google toolbar.
I recommend you remove this program, to do so, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, find Ask Toolbar and select Remove

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://softwarereferral.com/jump.php?wm ... Ojg5&lid=2
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [explorer] C:\WINDOWS\system32\explori.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [taskmgra] C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgra.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [smgr] mgrs.exe
O21 - SSODL: sounddrv - {39C9E73E-8CD9-4E23-A935-8788BCBCDA3C} - C:\WINDOWS\sounddrv.dll

If you removed the Ask Toolbar then you can also check these lines (if present):
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {0A94B116-4504-4e26-AB05-E61E474AA38B} - C:\Programas\AskPBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A9SRCHAS.DLL
O2 - BHO: Ask Search Assistant BHO - {0A94B111-4504-4e26-AB05-E61E474AA38B} - C:\Programas\AskPBar\SrchAstt\1.bin\A9SRCHAS.DLL
O2 - BHO: Ask Toolbar BHO - {F4D76F01-7896-458a-890F-E1F05C46069F} - C:\Programas\AskPBar\bar\1.bin\ASKPBAR.DLL
O3 - Toolbar: Ask Toolbar - {F4D76F09-7896-458a-890F-E1F05C46069F} - C:\Programas\AskPBar\bar\1.bin\ASKPBAR.DLL

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Then download OTMoveIt to your desktop. and double-click the program to start it.
Select the contents of the below file list, then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
In OTMoveIt, click in the left-hand pane and press Ctrl+V to paste the file-list into the program
Then, press MoveIt!
If the program asks you to reboot now, click No
Copy the Results output and paste it into a new notepad file so you can post it in your next response. Do this by clicking in the right-hand pane, press Ctrl-A then Ctrl-C to select all and copy. Then open Notepad, press Ctrl-V to paste in the text, and save this text file to your desktop.

OTMoveIt file list:
Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\system32\explori.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgra.com
C:\WINDOWS\mgrs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sounddrv.dll

Now reboot your computer normally.

Once complete, please post the SDFix report, the OTMoveIt report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi bordas,

Here's some more information concerning reformatting which you may find useful:

The Some Re-installation Notes: section of this article:
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Also, wng_z3r0's guide to reformatting:
Reformatting Windows by wng_z3r0 has a lot of useful information on reformatting.

I recommend you get your OS up to date and security software installed from an offline copy before doing anything else.

Here are some tips to help you keep your new install clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule
Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

Spywareblaster is a free program which prevents the download and installation of Internet Explorer ActiveX based malware by immunizing your system against it. You can download Spywareblaster from here and a tutorial to help you get started is available here.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future
