Highjackthis file - malware has taken over

Unread postby JoeMann » July 17th, 2007, 2:06 am

My computer in infested with malware - mainly trojan horses. I receive numerous pop-ups, which makes it near impossible to run the computer in regular mode, must use safe mode. The viruses disabled Norton, but I downloaded AntiVir PE which is doing the pop-up warnings. Have run Ad-Aware, Windows Defender, Trojan Hunter, and SmitFraudfix. Still infested, mainly in the system32 file. The IT Dept at work says everything must be erased, but I really want to aviod that. I have a Dell laptop, and it can be reformatted to factory specs (losing everything), though I feel if i do that the virus will still be there - anybody know anything about that? Anyways, here is my Hijackthis file log. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Register to Remove

Unread postby askey127 » July 17th, 2007, 1:03 pm

Hi JoeMann,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
It is a stand-alone program that does not need to be "installed". Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected
When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------------
We then need to rename HijackThis.exe to reveal.exe
Use My Computer (Windows Explorer) to go to the HiJackThis folder

In your case the HiJackThis folder is: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\

Right-click on the HijackThis.exe file and select Rename.
(If you can't see which one has the .exe file extension, click View, Details)
Type reveal.exe hit <Enter> and close MyComputer
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run ComboFix-----------------------------------------------------------
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe again, or your shortcut, to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected
When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer, in Normal Mode if possible. Start HijackThis (reveal.exe). Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

So we need the contents from Combofix.txt and a new log from HJT (reveal.exe).

ComboFix and Hijackthis Logfiles

Unread postby JoeMann » July 19th, 2007, 1:10 am

Thanks for getting back to me. My apologies - the viruses seem to have buggered up my internet connection at home, so I have to go to work to get connected. Before I read your reply, I downloaded and ran two other programs - AVG Anti-Spyware and Super Anti-Spyware. Both found numerous viruses. the good news, I can now operate in normal mode without it being too slow and having constant pop-ups from the AntiVir program. I have decided to wait to download the ATF Cleaner until I hear back from you. I included the ComboFix log and a recent HiJackthis log:

The ComboFix log:

Note, the Symantec AntiVirus was badly corrupted from the bugs and kept trying to "reinstall itself" everytime something was done on the computer, it could not be removed, so i visited the Symantec website and was able to manually remove it - the files are remnants of it.

Joemann,
I am going to give you quite a lot to do. It will centralize the downloads.
Please don't Install or Uninstall or Run any other programs unless instructed.
Believe it or not, extra unscheduled scanning/cleaning/file removal makes it more difficult to keep track of what is going on with your machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Trojan Hunter Guard
Go to TrojanHunter Guard in the lower right corner of your screen. It is a light blue icon with a magnifying glass that can be difficult to see but the handle is red. Right click it and select settings. Uncheck "Load at startup" and "Enabled".
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
Click on the Tools menu, click General Settings, Scroll down to Real-Time Protection Options section and Deactivate the Real-Time Protection system.

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.
---------------------------------------------
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says), then STOP

On your desktop click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
After you run the tool, you can delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download LSPFix from here : http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
DON'T RUN LSPFIX. Just install it on the infected machine. We may need it later.

JoeMann,
You have pieces of THREE different antivirus programs running. That will seriously damage your protection.
Choose ONE from among Antivir, NOD32, and Symantec(Norton), and Uninstall the other two, one at a time, using Ctrl Panel, Add/Remove Programs
---------------------------------------------
If Symantec is one of the programs removed, continue here:
To completely remove Norton Antivirus, Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool for your version of Windows.
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Perform the DownLoad for your version of Windows (download to your desktop as it says), then STOP
On your desktop click on Norton Removal Tool and follow the instructions.
------------------------------------------------------
Please download SmitFraudFix.exe by S!Ri and save it to the desktop.
  1. Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
  2. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
  3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually in the root of your C drive
  4. Please copy/paste the content of that text file report (C:\rapport.txt) into your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis (reveal.exe). Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply, along with the contents of C:\rapport.txt

SmitfraudFix and Hijackthis logs

Unread postby JoeMann » July 20th, 2007, 1:43 am

Thanks for the quick reply:

I have removed the Avira AntiVir program and kept NOD32 as my virus software. The Symantec was my only virus program, but it got corrupted when the bugs attacked. It is not Norton, but Symantec Antivirus Corporate edition version 9. It could not bew removed by Remove Program, or by the Norton Removal Tool software. I did a manual removal (following the Symantec website) - very tedious process! - I have gone back and did it again, because I must have missed some things if you still saw evidence of it. It did say, however, in the manual deinstallation, that some things would remain but won't affect the computer's performance.

Here is the SmitfraudFix log:

JoeMann,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to a folder named \SDFix\ located in %systemdrive%
(That's whatever Drive contains the Windows Directory, typically it will be C:\SDFix\)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally, paste the contents of the Report.txt in a reply along with a new HijackThis log

SDFix and HijackThis logs

Unread postby JoeMann » July 20th, 2007, 8:04 am

Again, thanks for the quick reply

I ran the SDFix program, but during its operation a pop-up appeared titled "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem" with the message "SDFIX C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose close to terminate the application" I pressed close but it continually poped-up, so I eventually pressed 'Ignore'.

Here is the SDFIX log:

JoeMann,
You may want to print this out, or save it as a Notepad document on your Desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Submit a file to Jotti
Please go here : http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top of the page there is a field to add the filepath.
Copy and paste this filepath:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\27D1547C70.sys

Then hit Submit or Upload, depending on the scanner.
The scan will take a while before the result comes up so please be patient.
Then copy and/or save the result and post it here in this thread.

If Jotti's service load is too high, you can use the following scanner instead:
http://www.virustotal.com/xhtml/index_en.html
or virus.org here: http://scanner.virus.org/
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Additional Info is here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the files shown below, select View, Details, highlight each listed file only, one at a time, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.
C:\Windows\System32\ihhkj.tmp
C:\Windows\System32\ihhkj.xxx <== xxx can be any other file extension. Delete any that exist.
C:\Windows\System32\jkhhi.xxx <== xxx can be any file extension. Delete any that exist.

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe or your shortcut to run the program.
Under Main, choose Select All
Click Empty Selected
When it tells you how much has been removed, click Exit to close.
-----------------------------------------------------
REBOOT in NORMAL MODE
-----------------------------------------------------
Using Internet Explorer, Please Do an Online Scan with Kaspersky WebScanner.
Go here to run an online scannner from Kaspersky.
  • Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
  • A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
  • Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
  • Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
  • Then click on "My Computer", and the scan will start.
  • Once finished, save the log to your Desktop as filename KAV.txt

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.
So we will be looking for the results from Jotti or VirusTotal, and the contents of KAV.txt, along with any comments about file removals.

JoeMann,
Almost there.
Delete Combofix-do.txt from your desktop. We will make a new one.
-------------------------------------------------------------
  • Open a new Notepad window (Start>All programs>accessories>notepad). Choose File, New.
  • Highlight the contents of the codebox below and press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard
    Code: Select all
    Folder::
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition

  • Paste the contents of the clipboard into the Notepad window by pressing Ctrl+V or Edit, Paste
  • Save it to your desktop as Combofix-Do.txt

    Image
  • Now drag and drop the Combofix-Do.txt icon onto combofix.exe as in the picture above, and follow the prompts.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

JoeMann,
Let's find that entry calling for xpupdate
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please download the Registry Search Tool from here (scroll down-there are also other tools on the page):
http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/
Unzip it to a convenient location such as your Desktop.
Make sure that your Antivirus / OS allows the use of the .vbs scripts. If prompted, make sure to allow the script.
Double click regsearch.vbs
Copy / Paste the following line into the Search Box:

xpupdate

then hit Ok
It may take a while to run.
It will tell you when it's done and offer to have you look at the file.
Say Yes, and when it opens copy/paste the content in your reply.
