Even when I use spybot S&D and remove this file, it keeps coming back.

Hi papoose,

From your log it looks like you have NOD32 antivirus and eTrust Internet Security Suite. These are both good programs however you should only use one antivirus program as using more than one at once can cause serious system problems. If you wish to use NOD32 then please ensure that the eTrust antivirus component is deactivated.

Next, open Spybot - Search & Destroy
Select Mode->Advanced Mode and Yes to the prompt
Select Tools and View Report from the menu on the left side
Click the View previous report button, select the most recent log which starts with the word Fixes and press Open
Check that this log includes the Bifrose.la detection - if not, select another log which does
Then press Export, save a copy of the report to your Desktop and post it in your next response.

Next, move HijackThis from the desktop to it's own folder:
  • Open My Computer, navigate to C:\ and make a new folder named HJT
  • Move the HijackThis.exe program file from your desktop to C:\HJT
  • If you wish to place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop, then right-click hijackthis.exe, select Send To and choose Desktop (create shortcut)

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Next to the Generate StartupList log button, place a checkmark in the box labelled list also minor sections (full)
Then press the Generate StartupList log button and say Yes to the prompt
Save the StartupList log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Spybot log, the startuplist log, and a new HijackThis log.

Hi papoose,

I'm sorry to tell you this, but your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

  • Open HijackThis and choose Open the Misc Tools section
  • Click the Delete a file on reboot... button
  • Navigate to this file and press Open:
    C:\Program Files\Bifrost\Server.exe
  • When asked to reboot now, say Yes

Once your computer has rebooted, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir /a "C:\Program Files\Bifrost" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\bif.txt"

A file called bif.txt should appear on your Desktop, post the contents in your next response.

Once complete, please post the bif.txt output and a new HijackThis log.

I do not wish to reformat. Once this trojan is removed, even though it is not 100% sure that the machine is clean, would you say the chances are good that i would be generally safe in doing internet banking on this computer?

Hi papoose,

After we're through I'd say the chances are excellent that your machine will be clean. The problem is simply that a remote attacker could have accessed your machine and done anything they wanted. Therefore I can't give you a 100% assurance, so I need to make you aware of this.

This trojan has keylogging and screen capture built-in so please take the internet banking warning seriously (if applicable to you) and change all your passwords immediately - the sooner you take action the less likely you are to have any problems as a result of this infection.

You can now use Windows Explorer to delete this folder:
C:\Program Files\Bifrost

You have uTorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but P2P file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
You can remove uTorrent via Add/Remove Programs or, if not present, by deleting the folder C:\Program Files\utorrent

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Search for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
(It should have this icon next to it: Image)
Click that entry and then click on the Change/Remove button and follow the instructions to remove Java.
Repeat to remove all versions of Java.
Download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Next please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Then please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.


Once complete, please post the Kaspersky log, the Blacklight log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi papoose,

Backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.

Your log looks fine. Did the registry fix instructions work OK and is your machine running better now?

My machine has been working fine since post 1 for the most part ; I was noticing more random freezes and lockups before, though. I had a free version of zonealarm and it kept crashing my computer; I wonder if the Bifrose.la was the cause of this?

The registry fix instructions worked as far as I could tell; is my machine no longer infected?

I just scanned using spybot S&D again and bifrost came up again :?

Do I need to restart for it to be truly gone?

Hi papoose,

OK please post the Spybot scan results for the scan you have just run in the same way as before:

Select Mode->Advanced Mode and Yes to the prompt
Select Tools and View Report from the menu on the left side
Click the View previous report button, select the most recent log which starts with the word Fixes and press Open
Check that this log includes the Bifrose.la detection - if not, select another log which does
Then press Export, save a copy of the report to your Desktop and post it in your next response.

Then open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Next to the Generate StartupList log button, place a checkmark in the box labelled list also minor sections (full)
Then press the Generate StartupList log button and say Yes to the prompt
Save the StartupList log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post the Spybot log, the startup log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi papoose,

Could you please clarify something for me?
Since you performed the fix.reg instructions, how many times have you 'fixed' the Bifrose entries using Spybot - once or more than once?
