HIJACK log file, please help..I'm about to go crazy

Unread postby sugarpea859 » July 5th, 2007, 11:50 pm

Hi, I'm not sure how this works, but I downloaded the HIJACK software and created a log file. I tried to do a bit myself, but I might have screwed it up more. I'm going to post my log file below. I would be so grateful for any help. Please email me at <email removed - 'KG>. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I am curious to know if you can get things out of the "Ignore list". I put a few things there and I'm scared that I messed up. Are these items, just ignored by the scan or are they deleted totally from the registry?

Hi! Welcome to the MWR forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please be patient as my posts to you have to be checked before I reply, so they make take longer.

Before we continue, I need to know what changes you made with HijackThis and what you added to the ignore list.

Thank you so much. I really need some help. I couldn't copy and paste the ignore list log file and it didn't have a scroll bar to read all the file extensions, so I put it in word and typed it. Some of the file extensions could not be read, so I hope you're able to get something out of these. If there's some way to copy it where you can see it all, please let me know and I will do that. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to repay your generosity. Also, in reference to your other request...I don't think there was anything else I changed. I fixed a few things, but when I realized I wasn't going to be able to do this myself, I restored the "fixed" items. Is that okay? Again thanks so much for replying.

The reason I got rid of the four below is because it was Internet Providers we had in the past (Earthlink, PeoplePC, WMconnect) so, I figured it was safe to delete those. We have Cable modem now...

Hi sugarpea

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Dangerous infection on this machine.
The infection is delivered by a Backdoor Trojan.
It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:
  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
  • The variety of malware - this influences the decision on whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.
If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:
  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

That is bad news. Thank you for helping me though. I guess I'm going to reformat my computer. I used to be in A+ and webmastering, but I have totally forgot everything about computers that might could help me. I'm going to research it, but from my understanding, I just reinstall everything after I reboot the computer, right? Question is...how do I get everything off the right way? I'm going to start researching right now to find out, but if you're on in the next hour or so, just let me know how to go about it. Thanks for all your help.

Hi sugarpea

When I re-install, it's a case of putting in the Windows CD and rebooting. You need to make sure your BIOS is set to boot from CD. Here is a walkthrough for you.

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/XPClean.htm.

If you can, print out the instructions.

You were heavily infected too, so I'll give you some recommendations for when you are up and running again.

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
I recommend AVG Anti-Virus (Free Edition)!
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
    I recommend ZoneAlarm (Free Edition)!
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.

      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

I hope it goes well for you.

Resending Log and explanation

Unread postby sugarpea859 » July 9th, 2007, 7:10 pm

There is a Windows message comming up that says "STOP! IMMEDIATLY ATTENTION REQUIRED. windows has found CRITICAL SYSTEM ERRORS. download registry cleaner from: http://www.clean32.com. FAILURE TO ACT NOW MAY LEAD TO DATA LOSS AND CORRRUPTION!" and that's about the only problem. The popups have stopped and my Antivirus Software is catching a few things. The new log is below.

Hi sugarpea

You are currently using an unpatched version of Microsoft XP. It is CRITICAL that you update to Service Pack 1
Please visit this link:
Microsoft Service Pack 1

and install Service Pack 1. If you run into troubles, please post them here.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT update to Service pack 2. Doing so before your computer is clean can cause Windows to become unstable.
We will update to SP2 when you are clean.

Please post back with a HJT log and your computer running with Service pack 1, or with any problems you are having updating.

Download AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Install AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Launch AVG by double-clicking on the icon.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • You will need to update AVG to the latest definition files.
    • At the top of the main screen click Update.
      • Then in the Manual Update section, click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • When updates are completed, close AVG.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG.
AVG manual updates

Run a scan with AVG.
  • Click on Scanner
    • Click on the Settings tab, and set the following settings.
      • How to act
        • Click on Recommended actions, and set to Quarantine.
      • How to scan
        • Check all options.
      • Possibly unwanted software.
        • Check all options.
      • Reports
        • Check Automatically generate report after every scan.
        • Uncheck Only if threats were found.
      • What to scan
        • Check Scan every file.
    • Click on the Scan tab.
      • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
      • When the scan has finished
        • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
        • At the bottom of the window click on the Apply all Actions button.

Note: Don't save the report before you hit the Apply action button.

Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

AVG will save a report in the following location C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG anti-spyware 7.5\Reports
