Unread postby Platinum » July 5th, 2007, 9:08 am

So someone from the office brought in her laptop. It's got a lot of bad stuff on it. I ran Spybot S&D, superantispyware, and trend micros housecall. superantispyware found a lot, spybot s&d found a few entries, and trend micro even fewer entries but I know theres still stuff. Here's the HJT log.

thanks in advance

platinum,
You know the drill. If you answer your own post, no one else will, unless you're lucky.
The HijackThis version you used is a beta, and not necessarily ready for prime time.
Please download version 1.99.1 as follows:
------------------------------------------------
  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
------------------------------------------------------------
Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix will encounter a file it cannot remove.
In that case, VundoFix will run on reboot. Simply repeat the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

First: Thanks for the quick response.
Second: The link you provided for Vundofix wasn't working for me for some reason so I downloaded v.6.5.4 off softpedia, hope thats alright.
Third: You asked me to scan with HJT before running Vundofix, but that would leave a HJT log with everything Vundofix corrected still in the log. So, I ran Vundofix first, HJT second, and here are the logs:

platinum,
ComboFix targets Winpop, which is associated with Vundo.
Vundofix may have taken it out but I didn't see it in the Vundofix log.
Weatherbug is optional, but has a storied past, and I wouldn't want it on my machine. You can remove it using Add/Remove if you wish.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  1. Click Start.
  2. Click My Computer.
  3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  4. Select the View Tab.
  5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  6. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  7. Click Yes to confirm.
  8. Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  9. Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
You may want to print this out, or save it as a Notepad document on your Desktop, since you won't have Internet access in Safe Mode.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Start Your Computer in Safe Mode.
Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly as the machine boots, until a menu shows up. Choose Safe Mode from the list. In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Additional Info is here: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion.
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the files shown below, select View, Details, highlight each listed file only, one at a time, and press Delete.
Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iksjfiuq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\yqqskpdj.exe

If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to each folder shown below, highlight the folder if found, and press Delete.

C:\Program Files\Outerinfo\
C:\Program Files\Winpop\

In the case of a folder removal, you may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Log looks good.
I would suggest the following to tidy up for the future:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing them. The only way to erase these files is to temporarily disable System Restore. You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The Disable/Re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download CCleaner from here
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
  • Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button. Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to ReHide System Files
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Do Not Show hidden files and folders.
  • Check Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Check Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click Yes to confirm if asked.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are all UNchecked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Awesome, hey thanks for the timely responses. I didn't think I'd get her laptop back to her until at least Monday, I know how it can be hectic at times, especially when youre workin on a nasty log. I'm sure she appreciates all the help too. It's her kids that get at the laptop, so I'm going to set up alternate accounts for them so they cant install crap and change things.

Thanks again man, I appreciate the help! I'm sure I'll be back eventually with someone elses computer to clean up!
