HijackThis log

Unread postby Dwight Hebert » July 5th, 2007, 12:06 am

Hello

Below is my hijack this log. Before starting the computer was very slow and I was having a lot of popup and browser redirects. Prior to posting, I have run CleanUP, AVG, AVG spyware, Spybot S&D, Panda and Adaware.

The computer is running very well now but I am concerned that I may have missed some problems. Would someone take a look at this HiJack This log and let me know what I need to do next.

Also, earlier I was using HiJackThis 2.0(Beta) version until I read in one of the postings to use the older version. The older version found several new lines that the Beta version missed. The O20 lines were not shown in the Beta report.

Thanks
Dwight

Your HijackThis log does not show any malware. There is, however, one item we need to sort out. Your Windows Security Center is not working as the registry entry appears to have been corrupted.

-------------------------------------------------------

Backup the Windows Registry

We need to backup your Windows Registry before making the change.
  • Download Erunt to your desktop from here
  • Double-click on the file to install the program
  • Untick the NTREGOPT desktop shortcut option
  • Click No when you get the option to run Erunt at Windows startup.
  • During the installation, tick Launch Erunt
  • Accept the defaults for running a backup
  • Erunt will then backup your registry
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit the Windows Registry

Select the contents of the Code Box below and copy/paste into Notepad

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wscsvc]
"ImagePath"="%SystemRoot%\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs"

  • Make sure that Word Wrap is turned off in Notepad - (click the Format menu and uncheck Word Wrap)
  • Click Save As on the File menu and name the file fix.reg
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • Save the file on your desktop
  • Close Notepad and make sure that all other windows are closed
  • Important:
    • Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
    • Make sure there is one blank line at the end of the file
    • Make sure that you have copied all of the text (e.g. don't miss the first 'R')
  • Double-click on the fix.reg file
  • When it prompts to merge, click Yes
Reboot the computer.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Firewall

I cannot see any sign that you are using a firewall. Are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Outpost Firewall are both good and have a free version. I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6u2.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Click on the link named Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2
  • Click on the radio button to Accept License Agreement
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save the downloaded file to your hard disk
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 2 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
-------------------------------------------------------------

Please let me know how the computer is running and post a new HijackThis log, as a reply to this thread.

Beynac

Thanks, I've followed your procedure but I'm still having trouble with the security center entry. I cut and pasted the fix.reg as instructed and then ran it twice. I got the success message but the security center does not show up on the control panel and does not open in the services management consol. The error message I got was " Error 123: The filename, directory name or volume lable syntax is incorrect".

Here is my new Hijackthis log.

That's annoying. I'm not sure why that hasn't worked, but let's try a different approach (thanks to tim s for the 'fix').

Please download and uzip Wscfix.
  • You will now see two files: Wscsvcfix.exe and readme.txt. Double-click Wscsvcfix.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Inspect and Fix button once, and then restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Note: That this utility requires administrator credentials to run correctly.

After reboot, re-run HijackThis and post a new log.

That's looking better. :)

I would like you to do an online scan to make sure that there is nothing lurking!

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as... button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The Kaspersky report
  • A new HijackThis log

The Kaspersky report is only showing a couple of items in Spybot's backup folder. I see that you have not yet installed a third-party firewall. I strongly suggest that you do so as soon as possible.

Flush System Restore

Now that the computer is clean, it would be a good idea to 'flush' the System Restore points and create a new clean one.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
