Generally running slow

Unread postby cawitt » June 24th, 2007, 9:44 pm

My XP machine usually starts off running well after a reboot, but after it's been on a while, it seems to get "clogged." I'd like to remove some of the stuff that's not necessary.

Also, when I installed Verizon's software to set up a DSL connection, it hijacked my browser. I uninstalled it, but it left (at least) one vestige: In the upper-right corner of IE, I now have a white "V" on a black background, instead of the normal IE icon, the "e". I'd like to remove that if possible, too. (This only happend to my user account in XP. The other accounts were unaffected.)

I would recommend that nobody install Verizon's crappy software on their machine, ever!

Anyway, here is my HJT log:

  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open the CCleaner program by doubleclicking the CCleaner Icon on your desktop.

( Do not use the Issues block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
Check Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, and System so that all items are checked. In the Advanced section, have a check only on Old PreFetch Data.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
  • Reset Temp File Removal for Regular Use.
Click on the Options block on the left. Select the Advanced button. Check "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours".
  • Set CCleaner to Run When Computer Starts. Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Settings. Check Run Ccleaner when computer starts.

Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the Installed Programs List from CCleaner
Open CCleaner.
In the Left Pane, click Tools
Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
In the lower Right, click Save to Text File.
Pull down the arrow at the top of the Save dialog and choose Desktop as the location.
You can leave the filename as install.txt
Click Save
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
If you can, see if the delays after browsing are still there.
So we are looking for the Installed list from CCleaner and a new HJT log

cawitt,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Peer to Peer File Sharing
Please note that as long as you're using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking (Kazaa, Morpheus, Limewire, etc.) and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true.
You may decide to continue P2P sharing, but keep in mind that this practice may be the source of some of your current PC issues..
Additional information on the safety of Peer to Peer programs themselves is here : http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/
Regardless of the program used, the practice of file-sharing is very unsafe for the health of your PC.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O16 - DPF: {38578BF0-0ABB-11D3-9330-0080C6F796A1} (Create & Print ActiveX Plug-in) - http://www.imgag.com/cp/install/AxCtp.cab
O16 - DPF: {BB383206-6DA1-4E80-B62A-3DF950FCC697} (Create & Print ActiveX Plug-in) - http://ak.imgag.com/imgag/cp/install/AxCtp2.cab

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run the Norton Removal Tool from Here:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
Follow the Instructions for complete removal.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Use Add/Remove Programs In Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.0_01
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.1_02
Golden Palace Casino
GoldenCasino

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
Gamespy Arcade does bundle adware and will produce unsolicited ads. I recommend Uninstalling it.
ewido antimalware is a good program, but has been superceded by AVG Anti-Spyware. I would recommend uninstalling it and retrieving the new one from here
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
-----------------------------------------------------------
Then download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer
-----------------------------------------------------------
I think one of the problems you are having could be related to the update function of Adobe Acrobat. It can phone home interminably and slow your PC to a crawl.
To test it, wait until your PC is extremely slow, then hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete simultaneously.
The Task manager will come up (eventually !!).
Click on the Processes tab, and note the names of the process files which are using most of the CPU resources.

Post back here.
If it's the Adobe Update files, you may have to get their tech support to help.
If it's not, we will look for other possibilities.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run Cleaning Scan. This will remove all Temp files, cookies, and Internet History.
Open the CCleaner program by doubleclicking the CCleaner Icon on your desktop.
Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
Tell me how your PC is running.

Just a few things:

The casinos I am keeping for now, since I need to get some money out of those accounts, but after that I will definitely delete them!

I'm not sure whether Adobe Acrobat is slowing it down or not. Seems ok for now.

My browser still has the Verizon "V" icon in the upper right instead of the normal "e". Do you know how to fix that?

Thanks again!

cawitt,
A few things:
Virtually all the casinos and poker sites will dump adware on your computer. The adware won't necessarily go away just because you remove the offending program(s), either.
The only exception I am sure of at present is PokerStars, which seems to be free of it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_01\bin\jusched.exe"
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02) -

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Just keep an eye on any slowdowns after using Adobe Acrobat. You know how to test for it now.
Just don't allow Adobe Update files to run at startup.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I don't know enough about Netscape to help with changing the Verizon symbol.
Edit: OOps. I had forgotten that in your first post it actually was IE that you were asking about. Here's how you do it:
Go to Start, Run
Type rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear into the open field, and press Enter.

-----------------------------------------------------------
I would ask you to install a HOSTS file, which is a very good protection, but it would block most of your casinos and poker sites.
You can read about it here: : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Awesome fix for my IE icon!

I did install WinPatrol; seems like a very useful tool!

I will install a HOSTS file, and just temporarily comment out the casino entries when I need them.

Things seem to be good now; I guess we're done? Do you need to see another HJT log?

Thanks again for everything!

You are good to go.
The other areas potentially affected by the HOSTS file that may need special entries are AOL and any e-mail monitoring by Symantec. Read about it on that site.
