Below I post my HJT log. This is on a computer that serves as the base(if that is what you call it) for my Linksys WRT54GS WirelessG Broadband Router I have at present two other computers that were attached via wireless to this router so I guess it would be networked. I have since disabled the wireless to the upstairs computer and have my laptop attached via wired to the router. My daughter's computer is the upstairs one and my main machine is the laptop. Apparently my daughter saw fit to download Limewire to this machine and dl music. She has since seen the error of her ways. Or she had better have. I digress but here is the HJT log.

Hi DougSr,

Can you tell me if you are experiencing any symptoms or having any problems with this machine?

Temporarily disable Spyware Guard
  • Right click the running icon of Spywareguard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Then go to Menu->File, and choose Exit.
  • It will automatically restart at next boot.
Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only

You have the a number of entries in your Internet Explorer Trusted Zone. These aren't all malicious websites, but some are rated as dangerous by SiteAdvisor and one looks like a MySpace phishing site! The security settings which apply to websites that are in the Trusted Zone are much more permissive than normal, so sites should only be added if they are trusted and if it is necessary for the site to work normally.

I strongly recommend you remove these entries, to do so, place checkmarks next to the following lines:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.69mb.net

Do you know if you have placed restrictions on changes to Internet Explorer settings? These may have been put in place by protection software like Spybot S&D. If you think there is no reason for these restrictions or wish to remove them then also place a checkmark next to these lines:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Now we will do a couple of scans to check for malware:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Then, please download F-Secure Blacklight
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Then download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post the Dr Web log, the Blacklight log and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you. The logs may not fit into one post so please check that they are complete and use multiple posts if necessary.

Stupid Question I know but I still must ask. Do you wish that I have Spyware Guard disabled during the running of the Dr Web, F Secure and Deckard's Systwm Scanner?

It doesn't matter, but it must be disabled until the HijackThis fix is complete. If you follow the instructions exactly then it should be running again when you reboot after the Dr Web scan.

If we aren't careful when cleaning malware we can really mess things up so if anything else doesn't make sense or you have any questions please ask, there are no stupid questions! :)

Hi DougSr,

The DSS report shows that your antivirus and personal firewall programs are disabled. Is there any reason for this? It is very important that you re-enable your antivirus program immediately, I strongly recommend you re-enable your firewall also.

One of the items which has been disabled by MSConfig is a backdoor trojan. I don't yet know if it has been running recently or whether the entry is a leftover from an infection which has since been cleaned, but you should be aware of the implications. Here is my standard warning for victims of this type of malware:

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

We will now use a program which will take care of this malware if it is still present:

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only), for each entry select Remove

Your Java is outdated and is now a security risk
Go to Start » Control Panel » Add/Remove Programs
Find and remove the following entries:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

You can download and install the newest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE), from here:
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Once complete, please post the SDFix report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, please let me know what symptoms you have been experiencing and if your machine is running any better now.

Ok the disabled programs were disabled due to my thinking that you wanted them disabled while running the scans. I had the computer removed from the net while they were disabled. I have noticed this machine running slowly and my other two machines acting differently also. This one seems still slow but that could be from program bloat. I would love to reformat this machine but this is a HP with a restore partition would running that do what is needed to remove the trojan? I also have tons of photos on here that I would love to keep, would burning them to DVD or CD be safe or could the trojan use that route to migrate to another computer?

Hi DougSr,

Reformatting should resolve any problems you have with the machine, including any malware present. Burning data files to CD/DVD from this computer should be safe, but you should take the precaution of completely scanning them before opening or accessing them in any way. I recommend you use Kaspersky Online Scanner for this job.

Here is some more information about reformatting to help you in your decision:

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
Reformatting Windows by wng_z3r0

I will now continue with instructions for cleaning but if you decide to reformat then please let me know in your next response.

I was also concerned about the below and removing all traces of the file sharing programs, Imesh, Limewire, etc from my system.

The Hosts file which you were concerned about has been replaced by the SDFix program so it is back to the Windows default and all those entries have gone.

You can remove the file sharing programs from your computer via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, however this won't remove all traces of them. You would need to take some pretty extreme measures to remove every trace, please advise if you need more information on this.

Next, backup Your Registry with ERUNT:
  • Download erunt.zip to your Desktop from here:
    http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt.zip
  • Right-click erunt.zip, select Extract All... and follow the prompts to extract ERUNT to a new folder on your Desktop
  • Inside the new folder, double-click ERUNT.exe to start the program
  • OK all the prompts to back up your registry to the default location.
Note: to restore your registry, go to the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Then, open Notepad (press Start->Run, enter notepad and press OK)
Copy everything inside the code box below (Starting with REGEDIT4) and paste it into a new notepad file.
Change the Save As Type to All Files and save it as fix.reg to your Desktop.

Note: Please copy and paste all the text at once, and check that there is NO blank line above REGEDIT4 and one blank line at the bottom.
Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\Microsoft Windows DLL Services Configuration]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\authorizedapplications\list]
"C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\windir32.exe"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\windir32.exe"=-

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop, if you did it right it should look like this:Image
Double-click it, when it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click Yes.[/i]

Then create a new DSS report:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and a configuration box will appear
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes under Main Log and press Scan!
  • One report called main.txt will be produced, post a copy in your next response

Once complete, please post the new DSS report.

OK here we go. I am still undecided about the reformat since I do not have a disk to reinstall Windows and I cannot find my recovery disc. I know I screwed up here. About the p2p files I would be willing to do what ever it took unless I did need to reformat(see above) to remove them. Here is the DSS report. And once again thanks for your knowledge and help.

Hi DougSr,

It looks like Limewire has already been removed via Add/Remove Programs so you can delete the following file and folder if they are still present:

C:\StubInstaller.exe <- file
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\LimeWire <-folder

This should remove the main program components of the program, there may also be partially or fully downloaded files that you want to delete also. There could of course be more files or other file sharing programs on your computer which the logs haven't shown - without doing a complete search of the filesystem it's not possible for me to be sure.

Another difficulty in removing all traces of Limewire is that even if all the files have been removed, there will be references to the program in the registry and it would be very difficult to find and remove all of them. If you require this level of cleaning my advice would be to reformat. Let me know what you think.

You can now delete cureit.exe, fsbl.exe, dss.exe, SDfix.exe and fix.reg from your Desktop.

Use Windows Explorer to delete these folders:
C:\SDFix
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\DoctorWeb\Quarantine

At this stage I think your machine is now clean, here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

You have plenty of protection software installed however please ensure it is kept up to date. Check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update themselves daily, and that your firewall is the latest version.

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
If you install this, be sure to follow the DNS Client service instructions before doing so.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know you have read this, and if there are any further issues or questions.

I thank you for the muchly appreciated help. I have to ask should I be worried about other machines on this "network" I know her machine is messed up and I have to get on that one but I need to make sure my laptop is safe first. I am hopefully not breaking rules but I think I will post a HJT on my laptop on here to check it also. I will start another thread if that is permitted. Thanks to all the fine folks here and God Bless you all.

You're very welcome :)

Feel free to start a new thread for the other machine if you would like us to check it out. If you think it's infected I'd recommend you only have one machine connected to the network at once because it's possible for machines to infect each other.
