I caught something! Func.exe?

Unread postby Nummol » June 25th, 2007, 7:02 pm

A few days ago, I caught some type of malware. Ive been getting popups advirtising WinAntiVirus pro, and an assortment of other advirtisements. Ive run a lot of different types of scans over the past few days. I just can't seem to get rid of it. The one thing that keeps reappearing is func.exe... funny thing is, I can't seem to find it when I go to look for it. This is my last resort before reformatting. Anyway, thanks for any help provided. Here is my log:

Hello nummol...welcome to Malware Removal!

You have a Vundo infection, and perhaps some others...

First, I need you to remove the HiJackThis Beta version from TrendMicro...it's still in testing. Go to start>>control panel>>add/remove programs and uninstall it. Then continue on as instructed below:

1. Please do this:

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on Edit>Select All; then click on Edit>Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

2. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encounters a file it can not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run again on reboot,

If this occurs, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

3. Post back with the VundoFix log and a new HJT log for me to review....

OK, that looks better...I take it that the HJT log was produced after running VundoFix?

I should have asked you for next list earlier...so to do things right going forward, do this first:

Open HijackThis, click Open Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Give me the HJT uninstall list, and we'll move on...

When you click save list in XP, a screen should come up that tells you where the file is going to be saved...for me (and I would imagine for most) that would be in the My Documents folder.

Look in that folder for a file titled uninstall_list.txt, then copy and paste the contents here.

When I click save list on the program list window the whole program just closes, no popup asking where to save it. When I seach using the standard XP file search for uninstall_list.txt, it finds nothing.

Any idea what could be going wrong? I could manually type out the list if needed. Might take a while, but whatever it takes. By the way, I did the vundo scan with VundoFix again today, and it found 3 more. Should I continue to remove them or leave them alone?

Hmm.. interesing side effect that I have just discovered. My computer wont allow me to open save as.. or open windows. I discovered this a few minutes ago while trying to browsing in an attempt to open up a file. Could be a weird side effect or completely unrelated. Another symptom that has recently popped up is that all names of my desktop icons are now outlined in a blue box, instead of the transparent image that should be there.

In order to move along with this quickly, I just took a bunch of screenshots and cropped them together. Unconventional, but maybe it will do?

Yes, it will do fine...just took me a bit longer to go through it as I couldn't 'cut and paste' while checking entries... :D

1. First download AVG anti-spyware (previously Ewido) from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
  • Once you have downloaded AVG anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG and update the definition files.
  • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  • Under "Reports"
    • Un-Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly

2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Save it to your desktop, we will use it later.

3. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} - <http://www.popcap.com/games/popcaploader_v6.cab>
O23 - Service: DomainService - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\saenngdw.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Reboot into safe mode by restarting your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present). Click start>>control panel>>add/remove programs:

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Weatherbug<==Optional...if you want another adware free weather program, please ask and I will provide a link (or keep this if you want..your call)

5. Please delete these files using Windows Explorer (if present, may not be):
  • Click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>Windows Explorer
  • Navigate to the listed files, then right-click to select them and click delete:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\saenngdw.exe

6. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7. IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning proccess:
  • Lauch AVG-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
  • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"
  • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  • Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
  • Close AVG and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

8. Old Java versions like the one on your system are security threats, and was probably why you go the Vundo infection, so you need to do this:
Update Java and Remove old Java Versions
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.<== scroll down the list to find THIS entry
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
Remove older Java Versions:
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start >> Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Install latest Java Version:
  • From your desktop, double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

9. Post the results of the AVG report scan and a new HJT log for me to review.....we'll also see if I can help with any problems you may still be experiencing.

I had a couple hiccups...

The biggest, is that I am unable to find the log file from the AVG scan, even after your warning.. it seems to have bested me. I thought I saved it in a folder named "reports" inside the AVG directory, but alas, I can't find it now...

It removed 38 tracking cookies, and 1 Adware file... I wish I remembered the names. I feel really stupid for letting it go missing... I hope I didn't mess everything up because of it

Anyway, I was also unable to delete the old JRE file. Although I could probably do it while in safe mode.

Anyway, my apoligies for losing the scan, and here is the new HJT log..

Also, I did get one popup while browsing in order to post this. Again, I am VERY sorry for losing that scan, I even made sure I knew where it was due to the warning, but the folder seems to not exist...

That's OK...there's been a glitch with the new AVG producing scan reports...if all it had was some tracking cookies and an adware file, that's good.

Nummol wrote:Anyway, I was also unable to delete the old JRE file. Although I could probably do it while in safe mode.

You did try and remove the old Java version via add or remove programs correct? You can try to remove Java in safe mode, but if I remember correctly, I don't think that works.

This is new in your HJT log, and looks suspicious to me....did you recently visit, or do you belong to icq.com?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icq.com] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtjjxarg.dll",forkonce

I need to do some checking with some of my peers about this....Googling icq.com malware brings up some interesting discussions.

In the meantime, I want to check out that file:

1. Show hidden Files:

  • Go to Start > My Computer
  • Go to Tools > Folder Options
  • Click on the View tab
  • Untick the following:

    • Hide extensions for known file types
    • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
  • Make sure this option is selected:

    • Show hidden files and folders
    • Click Apply and then click OK

2. There are a file I'd like to get analyzed:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtjjxarg.dll

Just to be safe, go to this site and have it scanned:

Jotti virus scan

Use the Browse button at Jotti, navigate to the file's location on your hard drive and submit it for analysis.

Let me know the results by copying and pasting here.

Get me this information, and I'll check with some of my fellow experts and then we'll proceed...I may be tied up with my 'real' job until tomorrow..I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Yes, I tried to uninstall using add/remove programs from control panel. Also, I havent ever used ICQ. So that definately seems weird:

There was no report that I could see easily, so I guess this is what you wanted?

Sorry for the delay...I didn't get any sleep last night and have had a busy day...

Hmmm...the Jotti scan is negative, but I still have my doubts about that file. Since you don't use icq, let's get rid of it anyway....

First, I would like you to upload this file to uploadmalware

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtjjxarg.dll

After that, let's do this:

1. Please re-open HiJackThis and choose scan only. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [icq.com] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtjjxarg.dll",forkonce

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

2. Delete a File on Reboot

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gtjjxarg.dll
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "yes".
3. Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
  • Enter your Country
  • Enter your State/Province
  • Enter your e-mail address and click send
  • Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

4. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report and a new HJT log for me to review.
