Error message

Appreciate any help with this. I've noticed some strange happenings when I attempt to open Firefox. I get the error message...

"Software update failed
One or more files could not be updated. Please make sure all other applications are closed and that you have permission to modify flies and then restart firefox and start again"

Firefox opened OK when I closed the error dialogue box but I thougbt it was a bit strange so have posted my HJT log in case I've been infected.

Hello LeeB...welcome back to Malware Removal!

Your HJT log appears 'clean', although Java does have another update available 1.6.u1 which can be had here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Let me know if you need help or updating instructions...the version you want is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1.

As far as the error message goes, seems that that is not uncommon with Firefox as seen in these threads:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (check the first listing in the possible updating problems section).

From the thread it looks like the error message can occur when trying to update Firefox from a 'limited' (non-administrator) account...

See if you can find a solution at the Mozilla Firefox site and let me know if this helps...I don't think it's malware-related though.

Thanks for you help. I followed the links and they suggested to delete active-update.xml, update.xml and the updates folder. I did this and the error message has gone. Do you know if deleting these files will affect Firefox ability to update itself automatically?

I'm not certain about the auto-update issue....my knowledge of Firefox's intricasies is limited.

Are you running the latest Firefox version presently? I suppose you could always uninstall/reinstall Firefox if that is a concern...

Perhaps someone on the Mozilla message boards might have an answer to that question about the ability to auto-update...

• IE-SpyAd for Zoned Out - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF is a new, freeware, temporary file cleaner for Windows, IE, Firefox and Opera with a simple, easy-to-use interface.
