Hi john ward,

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/l ... areout.exe

  • Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure Run fixit is checked and click Finish
  • The fix will begin; follow the prompts
  • You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so
  • Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal
  • Once the desktop loads a file will open called report.txt, post the contents of this in your next response

Then open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button, then press Save list...
Save the Uninstall log to your deskop and include a copy in your next response.
Now press Back and Scan and then Save log to create and save a new HijackThis log.

Once complete, please post report.txt, the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log.

Hi john ward,

Good to hear that things are a bit better, however we still have a bit of cleaning up to do. There's quite a lot in this post, and if you have any problems please stop and let me know - don't continue on.

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using alternatives such as VLC Player or Media Player Classic.
To remove, open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs find Viewpoint Media Player and select Remove

You also have WinPCap installed, are you aware of this and did you install this purposefully?

Press Start->Run, type services.msc into the box and press OK
Find in the list the service named Boonty Games and double-click it.
Change the Startup type dropdown to Disabled, press Apply then press the Stop button.
Then press OK and close the Services console.

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

You have imageshack.us in your Internet Explorer Trusted Zone. Security settings for sites in the Trusted Zone are much lower than normal, so unless you are sure you require this in your Trusted Zone please place a checkmark next to this line to remove it:
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://toolbar.imageshack.us

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt.
Then press the Config button, the Misc Tools button and then the Delete an NT service button.
Type BOONTY into the white box, press OK and Yes/OK to any prompts. Your computer will now reboot.

Once your computer has rebooted, use Windows Explorer to find and delete the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\BOONTY Shared

Next, select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
Select the radio button that says Obtain DNS servers automatically and then click OK twice

Next, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c ipconfig /flushdns

Now please check if you can access the internet normally. If you cannot, please follow these steps in Olive, otherwise skip them:
Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections
Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection (or Dial-up Connection if you are using dial-up) and select Properties
Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and press the Properties button
Select the radio button that says Use the following DNS server addresses:
Then enter the following IP addresses into the Preferred and Alternate IP address boxes: 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Then click OK twice

Next, please do an online scan with Kaspersky:

Open Kaspersky Online Scanner in Internet Explorer

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky,
Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT and then Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • The program will start to scan your system.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on the Save as Text button and save the file to your desktop
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Then download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe)
  • Click I ACCEPT and download the graphical user interface version to your Desktop
  • Double click the file to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop.
  • The log will have a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hi john ward,

We'll get BOONTY this time, but we need to repeat a couple of other steps also because they don't appear to have worked - did you experience any difficulty with the Network Connections settings? In any case please try once more and hopefully it will work this time:

Please open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines (if present):
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{1D0C0026-ECAD-403C-BB86-138FE088D122}: NameServer = 85.255.113.203 85.255.112.217

Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt.
Then press the Config button, the Misc Tools button and then the Delete an NT service button.
Type Boonty Games into the white box, press OK and Yes/OK to any prompts. Your computer will now reboot.

Next, select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections

Select Start->Control Panel->Network Connections

Kaspersky has found some infected items in your Spybot quarantine folder named ZlobVideoActiveXObject..., these are dangerous so please clean them:
Open Spybot - Search & Destroy
Select Recovery from the menu on the left side
Select the relevant item(s) and choose Purge selected items
Close Spybot - Search & Destroy

Make hidden/system files and folders visible:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Show hidden files and folders
UNCHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm and press OK

Then use Windows explorer to delete the everything inside the following folder (i.e. not the folder itself):
C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache

Re-hide hidden/system files and folders:
Click Start -> My Computer
Select the Tools menu, click Folder Options and select the View tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading SELECT Do not show hidden files and folders
CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Press OK

Once complete, please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how you got on.

Hi john ward,

The changes we are trying to make to the DNS server settings aren't working, please try this:

Then download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe
  • Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start Smitfraudfix
  • When asked, press any key to continue
  • Select option #5 - Search and clean DNS Hijack by typing 5 and press Enter
  • Click Yes at the prompt
  • When it finishes, Notepad will open with a log file, post this in your next response

When complete, please post the Smitfraudfix log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi john ward,

Looks like the DNS problem has been resolved :)

I'd like to do one more scan:

Click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and remove the check mark from Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and next to Infected objects select Move, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Select all hard drives to be scanned by clicking on them - choose all drives - a red dot confirms they will be scanned
  • Click the green arrow on the right to start the scan
  • Click Yes to all if it asks if you want to move a file
  • Click File-> Save report list and save the report to your desktop
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit and reboot your computer (this is important as files may be moved/deleted during reboot)

Once complete, please post the Dr Web Cureit log and a new HijackThis log.

Hi john ward,

Looks good so I think your machine is now clean :)

You can now delete Smitfraudfix.exe, the SmitfraudFix folder, Fixwareout.exe, fsbl.exe and cureit.exe from your Desktop. You can also delete this folder:
C:\fixwareout

Here are some tips to help your machine clean:

Operating system vulnerabilities can easily be exploited by malware so please ensure your operating system is automatically kept up to date by using Windows Update:
Go to Start->Control Panel->Automatic Updates
Select Automatic and select a suitable schedule

Also, check that your antivirus and antispyware programs are set to automatically update daily.

You have good antispyware programs installed, however I recommend you use antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:

You should consider installing a Personal Firewall program. Even if you are behind a NAT router, I recommend you use firewall software as it will improve the security of your computer by monitoring and controlling outbound connections to the internet as well as inbound. There are various free packages available, such as Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm:

Consider a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
If you install this, be sure to follow the DNS Client service instructions before doing so.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
