Damaged Internet Explorer, spyware warning pop ups

Hello, and thanks for a very helpful forum.

It began with a very bad malware attack, involving a red desktop and a balloon in the bottom right warning of spyware attacks. After some looking on the net I realised it was all malware. I have followed your helpful instructions and got rid of all but the (almost) constant popping up in Internet Explorer and preventing browsing. It is made to look like a microsoft warning and tries to get me to buy their scanning software.

I am now operating on firefox, but would like to get rid of it alotogther. My Hijack this log is as follows.

I can see that you are using Avast Anti-virus. I can also see two other programs which could conflict with this. You have a-squared Anti-Malware Service. Is this the free version or is it the one which includes real-time protection? You also have eTrust Internet Security Suite. What elements of this have you got running?

It is important to only have one real-time antivirus program running. If you have more than one it will lead to conflicts between the programs and gives less protection, not more. I cannot see that you have a firewall program running. Are you using Windows XP Firewall? If not, and you are not using the one in the eTrust Internet Security Suite, I suggest that you switch it on immediately. I will give further advice on this later.

To summarise, you need one (and only one) real-time antivirus program and one (and only one) firewall program running. Please let me know the situation regarding the programs mentioned.

AVG Anti-Spyware:

I see that you have this program installed. If you have upgraded to the new version (7.5.1.36), please stop and let me know. Otherwise, please update AVG Anti-Spyware.

• Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
• The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
• It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).

Please check the following settings:

• Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... make sure it shows inactive or not available in the free version.

Boot to Safe Mode.

You will need to reboot your computer into Safe Mode for the next steps. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an always on connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode. I suggest that you print out these instructions.

• Restart your computer.
• Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting (a menu appears).
• Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware

• Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
• Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.

4. The situation with the firewall and antivirus programs....

When you wrote there was no firewall on the computer, but the Internet connection operates through a router with built in firewall. I have now enabled the Windows firewall as well. Is this the best way?

I originally operated with just Avast antivirus, but with this problem have had to add numerous other anti virus programs to get my computer clean. I originally intended to remove these and revert to using Avast when the whole episode was over. Is this the best program? I should I begin to use one of the others??

Firewall

Your router has a built-in firewall, but you still need to have a software firewall on the computer. Windows XP Firewall is better than nothing, but it only protects against incoming traffic. It doesn't protect you against outgoing baddies trying to "phone home". I strongly suggest that you use one of the third-party ones. Sunbelt Personal Firewall and Zone Alarm are both good and have a free version. I cannot stress how important it is that you use a firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a firewall in its default configuration can greatly lower your risk.

AntiVirus Software

Unless you have paid for one of the others, I suggest that you retain Avast. The main thing, as I said before, is to have only one running.

I suggest that you keep ATF CLeaner and AVG Anti-Spyware (AVG-AS) as they are useful programs. I suggest that you upgrade to the new version of AVG-AS.

Flush System Restore

We need to 'flush' your System Restore points and create a new clean one.

Turn OFF System Restore.

• Click on Start
• Right-click My Computer
• Click Properties
• Click the System Restore tab
• Check Turn off System Restore
• Click Apply, and then click OK

Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.

• Click on Start
• Right-click My Computer
• Click Properties
• Click the System Restore tab
• Uncheck Turn off System Restore
• Click Apply, and then click OK

If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:

• Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
• Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
• Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

I would also recommend that you have a look at Firetrust SiteHound. This gives warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. An alternative is McAfee SiteAdvisor. I use SiteHound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

Just while I have someone who may know the answer....About one week before this happened my laptop was turing itself off randomly, I assumed the fan was full of dust and needed cleaning (the random shutdowns due to over heating). Could this have been due to the malware as well, it appears to be ok now, but I am curious and also would like to stop worrying about it....
