Dan,
Here are the notes from the process I followed as instructed:

Everything normal until I got to Launch AVG ; Update came back as not available (needed)?

Once the scan was completed, there was no option for the report..not sure but I imagine I did something wrong. It placed 6 files in quarantine... I cannot copy the files to text.. Please advise.

All of the files listed to delete from the HiJack this were found and deleted.

Ran HiJack this... here is the report after all were complete:

Hi, I believe the kaspersky scan that you have returned is a report from your own kaspersky anti virus, which is running on your machine. If you look at the Instruction, I wanted you to do an online kaspersky scan.
Can you try that again please and let me know if you have problems.

Have a read through the AVG antispyware Instruction again to check that you set it up correctly, then try again for me, again if any problems don't be afraid to ask I'm here to help.
Thanks dan :)

Can you also tell me how to make sure the programs I have for Virus protection should be used; ie: I have Windows Live Care, Spybot, the various programs downloaded for this fix, and Norton.. and advice is appreciated.

Hi,AuraMagic, thanks for the logs we got there in the end that's the main thing.

Ok, from your returned HJT log It appears you have leftovers of Norton ( Symantec ) which I will deal with.
Delete bad programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present). It could be that they have a space or something between it , but it has to look like it:
  • Norton ( Symantec )

Download the norton removal tool, run it and follow the onscreen propmts
Direct link to tool:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_u ... l_Tool.exe[/quote]
____________________

Your log shows that you have two different antivirus programs installed and running side-by-side namely "Kaspersky" and "Microsoft Windows OneCare Live" which is not good practice. I'm sure kaspersky has it's own firewall bundled with the suite.

Do not attempt to run two entirely different 'on-access' resident scanner anti-virus products simultaneously. It is simply an accident waiting to happen. Having more than one antivirus program running and "active in memory" will most definitely use far more additional resources, adversely affecting your access to files and causing overall system slowdowns.

Most of the popular anti-virus products (when running together) will "fight for control" over the user's machine, and it is this conflict that will create slowing the system speed as well as other serious compatibility problems. This can also create registry conflicts as well as causing false virus alerts - or worse, missing alerts entirely!

Additionally, many of these types of programs simply do not "play nice" or work well with each other. Unfortunately, the only thing many of these types of security applications seem to detest more than potentially harmful viruses - is other antivirus applications running simultaneously together with them. Also, not all AV programs can be installed as secondary scanners, and sometimes installing separate AV programs will cause a conflict or the program's installer will even try to 'uninstall' any other anti-virus programs during the installation.

Therefore, my advice would be to pick one (or the other) of your antivrius programs to use and then use Windows Add/Remove Programs to uninstall the one that you do not want to use anymore.

If it was my machine I would stay with kaspersky, but this is your choice.

Hi,AuraMagic,

Did you use the Norton removal tool? This may well be a left overs

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Windows Live Search - res://C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar\msntb.dll/search.htm
O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe (file missing)
WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Right click start, In the drop down menu click "Explore" Then navigate to each file\ folder in the left hand pane, which will reveal its content in the right hand pane, highlight file or folder right click and Delete, if present:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared << This folder
C:\Program Files\Windows Live Toolbar << This folder

let me see another HJT log just to make sure that it went ok

Hi,AuraMagic,

Delete bad programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present). It could be that they have a space or something between it , but it has to look like it:
  • Windows Live Toolbar

**Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as
All Files and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop SNDSrvc
sc delete SNDSrvc
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe (file missing)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

Hi,AuraMagic,
Sorry for delay have been working.

Well done!
This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

It's also a good idea to Flush your System Restore points after ridding yourself of malware:

  • Click Start | Help and Support | Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close the Help and Support Center box.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.

This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

  • Re hide your system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    1. Double-click My Computer.
    2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Put a check by
Hide file extensions for known file types.
    5. Under the
      Hidden files
      folder, select
Do not show hidden files and folders.
    6. Check
      Hide protected operating system files.
    7. Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Stand up and be Counted.
NOW is the time you can start to hit back at the people who infected you.

Please take the time to go and complain - that forum has a topic for your infection which was vundo .. please post as a reply, you do not need to register to do so (but you can if you wish). It will also have a list of other places you can go to to register your complaint, depending on the country you are resident in. Please read the topics and complain, it is only with such complaints to goverment or government agances that something will get done.
