Fake Security Alerts

Unread postby dgale » June 4th, 2007, 1:19 am

My wife's laptop appears to have been infected by something. She let the virus definitions lapse and just informed me yesterday her laptop was acting wierd. I discovered that it keeps posting fake security alerts in the task bar that attempt to get you to download some unheard of security software. In addition, anytime you open Internet Explorer, it goes directly to various fake security websites. I also noticed that her CPU usage is at 90-100% even when nothing is running.

I promptly upgraded her this morning to the newest version of McAfee Internet Security Suite and after successfully downloading and installing it, I tried to run a virus scan...I'm not sure if it's the heavy CPU load or what but the virus scan goes incredibly slow (i.e. leave the room for a few house and come back and it's scanned 300-400 files total) and eventually the comuter just freezes up and the sceen goes blank - I can't even Ctrl-Alt-Del my way out - I have to unplug the laptop and remove the battery to get it to shut off so I can restart.

Following the advice I got at the McAfee forum, I ran the virus scan in Safe Mode and if finally finished but with no infected files found...I then followed the forum advice of downloading highjackthis and pasting the log below. Someone please let me know what is going on with this computer and how I can fix it. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Good morning.

You are using Trend Micro's HijackThis. This is still a beta version. Please uninstall it and download the previous version.

Please download HJTsetup.exe from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
  • Close HijackThis. Do not scan yet.
Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet.

------------------------------------------------------

Next, I need you to download some programs. There's quite a lot to do in this post. Take it one step at a time. Please stop and ask if you have any problems or questions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

SmitFraudFix (by S!Ri)
  • Please download SmitFraudFix from here and save it to your Desktop.
Do not use it yet.

--------------------------------------------------------

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune © from here : http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
This is a stand-alone program that does not need to be installed. Save it to a convenient location and make a shortcut on your desktop. Using this program will remove temporary files, temporary internet files and cookies from your system, which will mean that any scans will run faster.

Do not use it yet.

----------------------------------------------------------------

AVG Anti-Spyware:

If you already have this program installed, please update it as detailed below.

Download the trial version of AVG Anti-Spyware from here and install it. When the program has been installed, and you click the Finish button, AVG Anti-Spyware will open. Do not run a scan yet.

If the program does not automatically update itself during installation, or you are unsure whether it has done so, please do the following:
  • Click the Update icon at the top and under Manual Update click the Start update button.
  • The program will either update or inform you that no update was available.
  • It is essential that you get the update - keep trying until successful. (Note: If you have problems getting the update, you can download an installer for the full database from here (save it on your desktop). Once you have downloaded the installer, make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed and then double-click on avgas-signatures-full-current.exe to install the database).
You will need to change the following settings:
  • Click the Shield icon at the top and under Resident shield is... click active. This should now change to inactive.
  • Click the Update icon and untick the automatic update option.
  • Click the Scanner icon at the top and then click the Settings Tab.
    • Under How to act? - make sure that Quarantine is selected.
    • Under How to scan? - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Possibly unwanted software - All checkboxes should be ticked.
    • Under Reports - Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
    • Under What to scan? - Select Scan every file.
You can now close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do not scan yet.

---------------------------------------------------------------

You need to reboot your computer in Safe Mode for the next step. It would be a good idea for you to print these instructions, as you will not have access to the internet.

Important: If you have an 'always on' connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Continually tap the F8 button as your computer is booting a menu appears.
  • Use up-arrow key to select Safe Mode and press Enter.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Open SmitFraudFix
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press 'Enter' to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : 'Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?'; answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter' in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer 'Yes' by typing Y and press 'Enter'.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt.

Reboot into Safe Mode (as above).

------------------------------------------------------------

Run ATF Cleaner by Atribune ©:
  • Make sure that all browser windows are closed
  • Double-click the shortcut on your desktop to run the program.
  • Under Main, choose Select All
  • Untick Prefetch
  • Click Empty Selected
  • If you use Firefox browser,
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
  • If you use Opera browser,
    • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All
    • Click on Empty Selected
    • NOTE: If you would like to keep any saved passwords, please untick that option.
  • Click Exit to close.
----------------------------------------------------

Close all open windows and then start AVG Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on the Scan tab.
  • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
  • Let the program scan your computer.
  • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
    • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
    • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
    • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
    • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
    • Click the Save Report as button.
    • Save the report to your Desktop.
  • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
Reboot in Normal Mode.

------------------------------------------------------------

Open SmitFraudFix
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter.
Answer Yes to the question 'Restore Trusted Zone ?' by typing Y and hit Enter.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread:
  • The SmitFraudFix report (c:\rapport.txt)
  • The AVG Anti-Spyware report
  • A new HijackThis log

Thanks so much for all your help so far. Everything you suggested above went fine, with the following exceptions - I was unable to run the AVG ANti-Spyware software in safe mode - I kept getting some sort of connection error, so I ran it in regular mode and it seemed to work fine. It located 68 traces of 10 objects and all were quarantined, but then the "save report" button" could not be clicked and I couldn't find any way to save the scan details to show you. Here is a summary of the files it quarantined:
Downloader.Zlob.yt
Downloader.Zlob.btq
Downloader.Zlob.btj
Downloader.Zlob.bgs
Downloader.Zlob.azc
Downloader.Zlob.awv
Adware.RogueSuspect
Adware.Qworke
Adware.Generic
Adware.Agent

Here is the SmitFraudFix report:

Good morning.

I'm sorry that you had problems with AVG Anti-Spyware. A new version has been released which appears to be causing the problems you describe. I have tried running it myself, with similar results. The infected items should have been quarantined provided that you clicked the Apply all Actions button. Please open the program and click on Infections. Are the items there?

Your HijackThis log is clean :) but I would like you to run an online scan to make sure that we got everything.

Kaspersky Online Scanner

Using Internet Explorer, go to: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
  • Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
  • Click the Accept button
  • Follow the prompts to download and install the ActiveX component(s) and other software
    • If a yellow information bar appears at the top of the browser window, click on it and select Install ActiveX Control
    • If a message box appears, click on OK or Run as appropriate
  • Click Accept again (see the note below if using IE7)
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click 'Next'.
  • Now click on 'Scan Settings'
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database: 'Extended' (If available, otherwise 'Standard')
    • Scan Options: 'Scan Archives' and 'Scan Mail Bases'
  • Click 'OK'
  • Now under 'Select a target to scan' select 'My Computer'
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete, it will display whether your system has been infected.
  • Now click on the Save as... button:
  • Save the report to your desktop (Save as type: Text document (txt))
Note: You may get returned to a window without the Accept/Decline buttons after allowing the ActiveX control. The buttons are there - you just can't see them! Click on the zoom button (bottom, right of the window) and change it from 100% to 75%. You should now see the buttons. Reset to 100% once the license has been accepted.

---------------------------------------------------

Please post, as a reply to this thread (you may need more than one post):
  • The Kaspersky report
  • A new HijackThis log
Please also let me know whether those items are in AVG Anti-Spyware's quarantine.

Sorry, I failed to tell you that yes, those items were quarantined and I do see them when I click the infections button. I'm off to work but will run the Kaspersky scan program as soon as I get home and post the requested results.

Thanks for your help.

Hi. It's been a few days since you posted. Are you having problems with the Kaspersky scan?

Sorry for the delay in posting the requested items - no problems, it's just been a very busy week at work and I feel a bit behind. Below are the two files - please let me know how to proceed.

It looks as if we've done it! :) The 'infected' items in the Kaspersky log are either parts of SmitFraudFix or in a System Restore point. I should have asked if the computer was running better now. If not, please let me know. However, I think that we can tidy up now. You can delete the SmitFraudFix folder on your desktop and the report (C:\rapport.txt).

----------------------------------------------------------

Flush System Restore

We need to 'flush' your System Restore points and create a new clean one.

Turn OFF System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Check Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
Restart your computer

Turn ON System Restore.
  • Click on Start
  • Right-click My Computer
  • Click Properties
  • Click the System Restore tab
  • Uncheck Turn off System Restore
  • Click Apply, and then click OK
---------------------------------------------

Please let me know whether or not you are still having trouble running McAfee scans.

Great! Thanks so much for your help. Everything is running fine again and I took the steps you suggested above. A couple questions:

Which of the various programs I downloaded and used to deal with this should I keep and which should I delete?

Any advice on preventing this from happening again? I now have the newest version of McAfee Security Center on her laptop and will keep the virus definitions updated and current, but I guess I'm a bit concerned that McAfee didn't locate these viruses after I installed the new version (and before I took all the steps you suggested) - is this because the viruses were already on the computer before I installed the new software? I guess I'm jut wondering if McAfee is reliable enough to prevent such a problem in the future?

Lastly, one odd byproduct of all these problems is that the task bar/start button/clock etc that are usually across the bottom of the screen are now on the left side of the screen (the start button is in the upper left corner and the clock is in the lower left corner) and I can't seem to figure out how to move it back to the bottom of the screen - any advice on how to fix this?

Thanks again for all your help - this forum has really been an invaluable resource.

Which of the various programs I downloaded and used to deal with this should I keep and which should I delete?

You can delete SmitFraudFix and its report (C:\rapport.txt) and you can uninstall the Kaspersky online scanner if you wish (Control Panel : Add/Remove Programs). I suggest that you keep ATF Cleaner and AVG Anti-Spyware (AVG-AS) as they are useful programs. The new versionof AVG-AS will run fine in Normal Mode. There is a problem with the automatic report production at the moment. I suggest that you change the setting (under Scanner/Settings) to Do not automatically generate reports and use the Save Scan Report button.

I'm a bit concerned that McAfee didn't locate these viruses

We get logs from people using all of the main antivirus programs. Infections will get through. Once an infection is in the computer, it is not always picked up if you later install an antivirus program. I'm not a McAfee fan, but it is a reliable program.

Right-click on a blank part of the taskbar and deselect Lock the Taskbar. Left-click, hold and drag the taskbar down to the bottom of the screen. Once in position, right-click on the taskbar and select Lock the Taskbar.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you do not already use it, I suggest that you install SpywareBlaster. This program will:
  • Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
This program blocks these items but does not run in the background. It therefore does not use any resources.

I would also recommend that you have a look at Firetrust SiteHound. This gives warnings when you are about to enter a website that is on their 'block' list. An alternative is McAfee SiteAdvisor. I use SiteHound, but both have a good reputation (N.B. use only one of them, not both).

Please let me know if you have any further questions.
