Need help again

Unread postby HelpMeMrWizard » May 24th, 2007, 6:36 pm

He infected another computer, I need help again. It's the yellow triangle with balloon to download the "fix". One triangel is flashing a blue circle and a yellow x.

Here's a log (I saw in another topic the suggestion to rename HijackThis).

HelpMeMrWizard,

Is this a VM operating system?
You have a backdoor trojan...pretty much a disaster. Can you just reload?
------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files
A description is here:
Description
Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec is a program that typically purports to be a needed upgrade to Windows Media Player in order to view adult oriented videos on certain websites. However, Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec actually downloads and installs additional malware on the user's machine.
Add. Description
Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec often silently downloads and installs rogue security programs such as SpywareQuake, SpyFalcon and WinAntivirusPro, but may install other malware as well. Some variants of Trojan-Downloader.Zlob.Media-Codec have backdoor functionality, giving a remote attacker the ability to control and use the infected machine for malicious purposes.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10451

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

However, if you do not have the resources to reinstall your computer and would like me to attempt to clean it, I will be happy to do so.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

HelpMeMrWizard,
I asked if you wanted to Reformat and Reload the OS.
The difficulty with these Remote Access Trojans is that they can modify some of the security settings so that even after cleaning they can get back in when you reconnect to the Internet, through the "door" they left unlocked .

I assume you will take steps to address the threat of ID theft.

You didn't tell me what you would like to do.
Which kind of help would you like from me?

If you want to attempt to Fix it, please proceed as follows:
------------------------------------------------------
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Alternative site is here : http://downloads.securitycadets.com/SmitfraudFix.exe
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"
A text file will appear which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that text file report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is one of the tools used here to help fix your computer. It is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool". It is not a virus, or a malicious file, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

I wanted to make sure the VM wasn't what was making you say that.

Yes, I have disconnected the computer from the network and am making preperations to wipe it.

This I can handle. (The virus magnet I need to figure out how to handle)

Thanks for your help

HelpMeMrWizard,
One of the best defences in case of a "virus magnet" is a strong HOSTS file. You may want to read about the latest uses and take a look at my normal download instruction here:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from inadvertently connecting to malware, spyware and adware sites by redirecting the connection request back to your own machine address (127.0.0.1). It is a very effective defense system.
If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, or if you use Norton to scan e-mail, be sure to read the special instructions in the tutorial below to make sure you don't block your own facilities..

Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?act=dscript&CODE=showdetails&f_id=5
If you download and install it first, then click Download.
When it finishes, click Replace, and then Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

Read an excellent instruction about HOSTS files (the Bluetack version) here:
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=8406

If you have a firewall, you may have to give permission to Unlock the present default HOSTS file before you copy / install the new one.
You may also have to give additional permission during installation of the new one.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can see another HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
and choose to download the MVPS HOSTS File instead of using the BlueTack HOSTS.
The BlueTack version (70k+ entries) is more aggressive than the mvps (11k + entries), and targets adware sites as well as more dangerous ones.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Luck. We are here if you need us for help.
